Definitely Russell Jennings. From the hardware and the species of wood (oak), I'd say it's about as old as mine. If so, the label was black. I've seen newer ones with a green label, and the wood was something else, maybe birch. I would guess yours is pre-Stanley purchase.
Thanks, LesserSon! That's it! Yours is in pristine condition. The grain looks great and the hardware is clean and bright. I am tempted to restore it, but I think I'd be motivate if I had the label. Maybe I'll have one made. Would you send me a nice shot of the label? I'll PM you.

By the way, Lug, I was wondering about this thing I saw in MO this summer. Is it usual to have one of these to display with the actual tool kits at militaria meets? How do you determine age on something like this? The cloth seemed to by synthetic, and I noticed the number 80 (1980?) in places. Is there an actual demand for these, or do they just sit in antiques stores?
I have one. Maybe the same one. Dated May 80 (yes, 1980), with a 13-digit NSN. These were issued with the GMTK in the early 80's, kept in the box, and the tools were laid out for inspection on top of it. Perhaps you've noticed that the tool outlines are actual size. The material it is printed on is definitely synthetic and waterproof. I've never seen one at a MVPA rally or meet. And I've never seen one for sale before, either. In fact, I've never seen another one since my regular duty days.

Below are some photos. The blacked out portion on the full view shot was to obscure the nomenclature information and date. I staged a little contest with it, asking fellow GMTK collectors to guess the date. As I expected, the guesses were all over the place between 1946 and the 1970s, due to how little the tools and the entire set changed over time. A testament to their design and utility. I included a shot of the nomenclature area so you can see if yours is the same edition.

Here's a couple paragraphs on that topic from the Introduction of a collector's guide I am apparently interminably writing (and never finishing):

"The current version of the “GMTK”, issued to all US Army maintainers in Career Management Field 63, has a few more tools (173) inside of it than its WW2 ancestor (115), but it’s both astonishing and reassuring to realize how many of the same tools it still contains. Tools common to the WW2 and current version of the “GMTK” include a lady’s foot pry bar, a tool cleaning brush, cold and cape chisels, files, thickness gauges, hammers, wood file handles, pocket and putty knives, pliers in various styles and sizes, punches (aligning, drive, and center), a steel rule, cross-tip and flat-tip screwdrivers, metal cutting shears, and square drive socket, open-end, and Allen wrench sets. That’s no accident or coincidence; it’s a confirmation of the kit’s utility and purpose in basic maintenance of military vehicles. Keeping up with technology, the modern “GMTK” now includes a multi-meter, a flashlight, a test light, mounting brackets, spring tension clips, combination and flare nut wrench sets, and it comes in a virtually unbreakable, four-drawer, injection-molded plastic Pelican case on wheels weighing a whopping 95 lbs.
But there’s no mistaking it as the heir-apparent grandson of the Greatest Generation’s portable, all-purpose, Second Echelon motor vehicle maintenance toolkit."

Managed to stop at one garage sale today. Picked up a few things for $40, he wanted $50. Box of 15 sockets and three 1/2 drive extensions. Nice mix with only one from Taiwan: included Craftsman, New Britain, Fleet, Husky, SK, and the first Mustangs I have run across. I think they were the economy line for New Britain. A Chatillions 50 pound scale, No 36 Stanley level, and a Miller's Falls plane.

Not found at a garage sale, nor estate sale, nor auction but on the new facebook marketplace. I couldn't pick it up until a couple days later but he held it for me till I could pick it up today. I'm super stoked about finding one.

I went to a garage sale today and it turned out to be a bust.

I tried ReStore and they were asking $5-8 per wrench for anything that said USA. Sockets were $1 each.

Anyone else think your local ReStore prices are high?

SCORE!!! nice grab--I've been on the ever-casual hunt for one of those--pretty tough to find..not too many euro or German shops my way that would have specialized in using the Hazet line exclusively I don't believe

My restores are way out to lunch on prices too. Rarely go any more.

I picked up these goodies at 2 different flea markets:

Steam punk glasses $5 ea.
Spud Wrenches $2 ea
Caulk Boots $15
2 snap-on Canada wrenches - minty $1 ea
Cool Yale & Towne chain block $8 (more entertainment here than one month of netflix for that money)
and best of the bunch was the Champion Fender Cover also $8

2ool: those corks would also have been used as golf shoes in our wet conditions before steel spikes were not allowed on the golf courses a few years ago.

thanks for the 411 on the Auger and yes i'm on the hunt now for the inch and bigger ones to maybe have a set of these now.

WRENCH: cool old machine that you made look like new (or better than new) don't you have one about twice that size that you have in your barn that you use for 3 phase power?

ALL: have a great weekend and good luck to you all. i stopped at a couple sales yesterday and zip, nadda, nilch and even if i wanted to pay $2 to $5 for a screwdriver i really didn't need another one.

cheers

I found this General Electric three speed circulator fan at the town church's annual yard sale. It's really neat. The shaft runs vertically with two sets of blades, pitched to pull air from above and below. It then pushes the air out horizontally 360-degrees. It needs some cleaning, but works just fine. Ten bucks brought it home with me.

Spent a shirt day at the auction today, came home with these items.
Kennedy 520 with 3 full width drawers.

Beat to hell SK case with a bunch of random USA brand sockets and drive tools.

Will post the last item in a bit, need to drag it out of the car and take some pics.

It was a dreary morning at the Quakertown flea market. Few vendors, and even fewer shoppers. After a fruitless rummage through $.50 wrenches, I bought four flat bladed screwdrivers (the cruddy ones) for $5, with the idea of cleaning them up like I had the other ones in the pic. Also paid $2 for a no-name saw that happened to have three intact split-nuts, which I may cannibalize for a saw with more restorative potential. It resembles a Disston-made economy saw called "the Imp," but this is full size, and lacks any sign of a blade etch or stamp.
The little Disston compass saw caught my eye because it also has split-nuts holding it together. The medallion dates it to 1874-75. For $1 it will clean up nicely.
On the way home, stopped at a smaller flea marker with even less attendance, and paid another dollar (I know! where does this guy keep finding dollars?) for a S2830 Blue Point Supreme double-open-end wrench.
Finally, stopped in a thrift store and paid $.25 each for three wood-handled Stanley socket chisels (alas, not sweetheart era, and missing one of the handles), and a Sears promotional wooden ruler with 1967 Pennsylvania fishing seasons printed on it. (Those were the good ol days, when PA regs would fit onto a portable object, instead of requiring a team of surveyors and lawyers!) The logo matches an aluminum J.C.Higgins tackle box I purchased last year, so I'll probably dust it off and throw it in there.

Beautiful resto work you did there! I don't know how I missed your 1st post on it. Makes my mediocre projects seem a little Mickey Mouse. It deserves its own thread, well done!

Last item from the auction. Normally I would not touch something like this, but it went cheap enough I may be able to take it to the flea market Monday and trade for some other tools I need/want.

Geez, Sam, that is awful nice to just flip, not being broken, and all. No room to stash it in a pile somewhere, eh? JK - good luck with the profit!

Sasquatch - great find!

Lug - the RJ label is black with gold letters. I think I may be able to get it onto a flatbed scanner, which may be better than a photo. There are actually a few of these boxes on eBay, and there seems to be two variations on the black label. One has a prominent "To the Public" notice. Also, the hinges may indicate age. The full strap style I think may be younger since it continues into the Stanley era, and separate smaller hinges may indicate older examples - not sure. I know you've said you don't purchase on eBay, but some have labels that are more intact than mine, so wherever of mine may be illegible, there is a resource for filling in the missing information.
I saw there's several Stanley ones, and looking closer, I think that wood is poplar, not birch. I think the machined parts that cradle the bits are probably basswood, even in the older ones. One eBay example sure looked contemporary with mine, but despite the cut-and-paste description the vendor was touting, it was definitely not oak, but probably poplar with a dark stain on the exterior. From glancing at the text on the label, maybe they always used various hardwoods, and there is no chronological progression in materials.
Also, thank you very much for the exposition of the shadow sheet. When I saw it, I was pinched for cash and time, so I just took a couple photos. It is cool, and I suppose if I see another, I'll have to have it.

Been on the lookout for a model 77 for a while. Never see any around here for sale. Paid $15. Seller said it worked but nowhere around to test it so I took a chance. Seems to be running fine so far.

Good scores. I always buy spud wrenches. Buy them when you see them and you might come across one stamped with AB or USS on it (American Bridge Company)

I found this Craftsman Plane still in the box. Doesn't look like it was ever used. They were asking $20, I got it for $15.

From what I can tell, it's a 1972 year model.

Snap-On Ferret speeder with a perplexing date code, Cornwell ignition wrench, Herbrand long nose pliers, Plomb and Proto offset dwarfies, a pair of Duro-Chrome obstruction wrenches, a Crescent-made Barcalo adjustable, tube bender, Chicago Specialities strap wrench, Stanley YANKEE No. 4595 cabinet screwdriver. The brass grease gun is a Tecalemit. These were put in British War Department motorcycle toolkits. I plan to put it in my BSA M20. I found a magneto spanner (Terry’s Spanners, also made in England) with it.

Some close-ups

Here’s the Snap-On Ferret speeder. I am not sure what to make of it. Normally if I saw this marking, with a slanted italic font…

…I would assume post-war. But… it has an “E” (1944) date code stamp!

Lugz - No, I don't think the slanted script means post-war. Just a stamp variation - maybe got more standard after the war?
My 1942 speeder has the same slant. As does my 1941 F5C tee.

If you post that on the "Spreading the Bonney Affliction" thread, I predict you will have an offer by PM in short time. That's an early one, with the patent number on it, and very good condition compared to what I've seen. I looked at a nearly identical one today at the flea market, but it did not have "Bonney" on it. I personally think Stanley made them for a number of other manufacturers, including Bonney.

Wrench: I LOVE your big old tools and you did an amazing job on all of your generators. WELL DONE.

Jeff: can you make a key for almost any lock?

All: mostly doll clothes and furniture at the few sales i stopped at. i didn't have much time and not anything planned so wasn't expecting much though.

hope you all have had a great weekend.
