A quick search on Sinclair vintage billboard pulled up these two examples. I think either one would look pretty cool painted on that wall.

I like the weathered look, but maybe it would look out of place with all the renovation work you've done and a fresh painted sign makes more sense (and would be easier to do, making a new 'weathered' sign look right is difficult to pull off.)

edit: I looked again, and didn't realize you already have a similar small sign hung on the wall, over to the right side of the overall photo.

Yes, companies frown on using their logos for personal profit.
Great idea on the Power X sign. Looks like there's a place at the bottom to add the station's name.

Thanks for the idea to put Perry Oil at the bottom. I never even gave it a thought. This is the proof for the sign, it will be 40"x80". I'm going to build a wood frame for it, probably painted red. I've decided to place this sign on the north end (right side) where I currently have the wood Sinclair oil sign hanging now.

Here is the 6ft tall Dino I'm looking for. The bigger ones have more of a presence than the smaller 4ft ones. This particular one sold this year at the Iowa Gas auction. If Rich Penn wasn't so greedy with his buyers premiums I would have tried to buy it.

The "Perry Oil Co." letters that are going above the office door are fiberglassed, painted and waiting to be installed.

Your sign proof looks awesome and the company name definitely completes it.
The 6 ft. Dino is the ticket. Hope you find one.

We were driving home in the middle of Utah and came upon this old station. There was a closed party shop across the street. That was it you could see to the horizon in all directions.

:3gears:
Small world, that is about 40 miles south of my house, as the crow flies. Elberta, Utah. It's a ways off the beaten path, how did you happen to find it? The closed party shop across the street used to be a little gas station & convenience store up to about 2004.
Seeing your photo from the other day, I decided to drive down there after work today. When I got there, two guys on Harleys were already there, taking photos...I had to wait my turn.

My son lives in Pleasant Grove. He's buying a new house in Saratoga Springs and we were visiting.

It's our second time to Pleasant Grove from Vancouver, Washington. That's just across the Columbia River from Portland Oregon. We drove east through the Gorge along the Columbia then into the Blue Mountain range. The trip to Salt Lake on I-84 takes you past the Snake River in southwest Idaho. We stayed in Twin Falls, Idaho overnight.

After our visit we were planning on taking Hwy 50 into California and spend the night in Lake Tahoe. That's when we found the short cut and the Sinclair station. I'm betting lots of people take pictures on that corner.

Anyway we decided to take I-80 to Napa, California to visit my sister-in-law and my brother who both live in Yountville just north of the city of Napa. Right in the middle of the valley and quite the tourist trap.

We drove north on 101 through the redwood forest and spent the night in Crescent City. Then drove through the Coastal mountain range on hwy 199 to Grants Pass, Oregon. Then up interstate 5 and home.

That's my wife hugging the tree. We were on the Avenue of the Giants when I took the picture.

I think we hit most of the highlights and it was a beautiful drive.
That's what you call a round tripper.

Put the Perry Oil letters up this week. This property had the Perry Oil Company name associated with it from the day the land was purchased in January of 1933 until Montgomery Ward took over the property in 1966. I felt it was only fitting that Perry Oil went back onto the building.

Raided my scrap steel pile and made a stand for the gas price sign

Auction scores from yesterday. A pair of Lincoln Engineering Gear Lubriguns, a Drainmobile and a Chassis Lubrigun, AKA 2 lubsters, a oil drain tank and a grease gun cart. Also got a Champion spark plug tester/cleaner

Gave the plug tester a quick wash and then set it in the station office

The Lincoln carts required a bit more degreaser and a pressure washer

They cleaned up pretty well I thought. The drain tank I am going leave as is and use it. I may restore one of the lubsters for display. I was originally only planning on buying the oil tank and one lubster, but when I was able to get all 4 for 55 bucks it was a no brainer. The chassis lube is missing its base and grease gun so I think I'm going to take the guts out, clean it up, stick a 30 gallon barrel inside and use it for a trash can.

Nice find Joe, they sure cleaned up better than I expected! I think the trash can idea is perfect. The Perry Oil letters look right at home, and your gas price sign looks great.

....

Sounds like you both had a nice time, I love scenic trips like that. :)

Looking good Joe. Do you plan on placing a "Power X" sign above the door on the right? I think it would balance everything out nicely.

...and are you going to paint the "curb", the edge of the concrete pad that the gas pumps sit on? it looks too new like that and back in the day it would have been painted red or sinclair green to help prevent people like my wife from driving into it.

Looking good Joe. Do you plan on placing a "Power X" sign above the door on the right? I think it would balance everything out nicely.

Short answer is no...for a few reasons. The two peaks are different sizes, the other side is substantially wider so if I were to put the same size sign on that side it would look tiny as compared to the other side. If I were to put a bigger size sign to be proportional to that peak it would overpower the other side. It would never look symmetrical side to side. The second reason is Sinclair never used that as a station sign. The HC was not only a fuel brand, but also Sinclair's corporate logo from 1926 till 1959 when the Dino signs were introduced.

The last reason is because I want to emphasis that door as the stations main public entrance. If you go back and look at the pic from the 60's it was the same way back then too. Only one door had any signage above it.

Looking great!

Man, those Lubriguns cleaned up very nicely once the decades of crud were removed.

Nice score on drain and Lube equipment. The drain reminds me of the one we had at Texaco. Brings back a memory of a friend that was visiting and ran the base over toe, cutting it pretty bad. Yes he was wearing flip flops and shouldn't have been messing with drain.

Joe, the lubesters turned out nice. What kind of auction was it, that had that many lubsters and plug blaster?

I found it pretty interesting & thought I'd share, for anyone interested. :)

I had one last area on the exterior of the building that needed some TLC, the south end by the alley. I had redone one of the windows, but hadn't done the window with the exhaust fan yet. I finally done that and rebuilt the rotten overhang this week.

Repairs done and a quick coat of primer before paint

Done

The Power X billboard sign showed up on Tuesday. I whipped up a quick 1x4 wood frame for it. With the frame it measures out to be 45"x85"

Night time pics of building are my personal favorite.

Great job with the ally side. I'm sure your to-do list is long, with all that fresh paint....just highlights the need for the lower part of the wall to be power washed. Sorry to point that out.......but lov what you have done with the building.

I saw some of the pictures on Instagram, forgot to comment so I'll do it here:
It amazes me you can find all those period correct artifacts for your Gas station and not just one oil filter but a dozen!
You did a great job on the sign and the Lincoln carts as trash cans.
How many people have thought the station is back in business?

Love the Power-X sign and how you framed it. It will look great hanging up. Also curious about how often you get asked for actual service? Although I would think the locals know the story and that you are not operating a gas station.

Before the pumps were placed out front and some of the signage went up I got a lot of questions about repair work. People seen the overhead doors going back in and just assumed I was opening a garage. I think pretty much every shop owner in town stopped by to see what was up. Now word around town is most consider it a museum of sorts. I just tell people it is a tribute to what was once here.

Hi Joe,

As a recent member on GJ i must say what a brilliant site with really interesting posts and people.
I've been reading about member's garage/workshop builds and having returned from a Classic car show where I work late this afternoon thought I'd have a quick catch up on the site when i stumbled upon your thread.
Well, what can I say, I'm totally impressed with your vision and execution of your garage and so have just spent, on and off about 4.5 hours of my life that I'll never get back reading your thread about your garage and impressed and in awe doesn't cover it by half.
Out of interest what do you do for a living, did you say you worked in sheet metal fabrication ???
Over here in the U.K. smaller garages are knocked down to make way for housing, usually flats (apartments) because of their smaller footprint as on our small island we are limited for space with housing at a premium.
We also don't seem to have the same nostalgia for garages as you guys in the States do which is a shame with the only similar places here being museums and even they aren't that common.
Please keep the pics and updates coming, i'm sure they'll be plenty and I thank you for all your hard work and dedication and a very interesting last (now) 5 hours.

I must say it is still very humbling to me to think that anybody would spend that much time reading about my little garage in the middle of small town Iowa. For that I say Thank You to you and everybody on this site that has taken to the time to follow along.

For work, my background is in automotive body repair and paint. I was a collision repair tech for 8 years. I was a combination man meaning I done the job start to finish, both the body and paint side. For the last 13 years I have worked as a painter/powder coater in a John Deere factory. I make new John Deere equipment green.

Things are finally winding down and coming together, it took me right at 11 months from when I took possession of the property to get to this point. I have two signs on order that will need to be put up, but other than that and locating a 6 ft Dino (looking everyday) it is pretty much done. I was going to wait to hang the Power X sign till the others showed up, but I just couldn't do it.

20170904_231318_zpsxhxqml7p.jpg

Sinclair stations always sold GoodYear tires so I'm having a early 50's era Goodyear diamond shaped sign made. It will be 32"x60". Sinclair also had a restroom sign that most every station had. Both signs will hang on the north end of the wall where I had the Sinclair oils sign hanging (I took that one down, I was never really a fan of it). Goodyear will be on top and the restroom sign below it.

20170907_090512_zpst8mhlg8q.png
20170907_090539_zpsesdj3kbz.png

I came across some original mid fifties Prestone dealer advertising that I couldn't pass up. I framed one of the posters and hung it on the east wall in the station office and put the other in the top of the north window so when you look at the pumps you can see it above them.

20170905_160759_zpsaih28b32.jpg
20170906_185928_zpssvhoamgm.jpg

I threw this little deal together as a way to display some of the newspaper ads/stories from the late 30's, one of the original Perry Oil tankwagon tickets and the Nourse Oil badge that I found in the attic. I put in a couple Iowa Sovereign Service maps as a tribute to its days as a Sovereign station.

20170903_150330_zpsfckd2qef.jpg

I get compliments all the time on the properties transformation and don't get me wrong I appreciate every one of them, but the ones that really matter the most come from old timers that say something like "its just like I remember it" I had one of those comments through the Stations facebook page last night.
