Sunday! A few vendors braved the heat! Found a few good things, then on the way to the parking lot I pass this old mans booth that's got the same old stuff every weekend. Today he had a bench grinder! I look it over and ask how much. He replies with $20. We go plug it in and it runs nice and smooth. I didn't even barter with him. Gave him the 20 spot and hauled the Wilton made grinder to the truck! got a couple of yesterdays finds in with these while cleaning up.

Wrenches:
Proto LA Pebbles box insets DOE
Plomb 1145 DBE
Blue Point DBE offset

Extension:
SnapOn 1/4

Ratchets:
Craftsman 3/8
K-D 1/2

Socket:
TRUTH 21/32 good shape

Adjustable wrench:
Williams adjustable Spanner

Bench Grinder:
Wilton made Challenger 1/3 hp 6" missing an eye shield but looks it will be easy to fab up the small bracket and shield.

I got 4 craftsman 1/4" drive 12pts, a 1/4 drive 11/16" deep snapon socket and an 11/16" Matco wrench from a flea market for $3 Saturday. Not a huge haul but it was the only non-taiwanese stuff in the whole bucket and it was $.50 a piece regardless. :D

I hit one of those sales that had an unsearched packed attic, make a pile quick pay and leave sales. I was a bit late and crawled into rafters and started grabbing stuff, mostly vintage glassware and stuff my GF likes. Then I came across some items wrapped in paper and tied with strings and put it in the pile as I had a hunch what they might be. She looked at my pile and gave me a price without looking at what I had. Got home and one was a Remington model 12 and the other is a model 31 barrel that looks to be NOS. The 12 works great
All in all I probably paid a buck or 2 for these.

LS those are Uticas? They look like Channelock Nut busters?
Yes. They certainly have a Channellock look. The “parrot beak” curve of the jaws caught my eye, then I was surprised to see “Utica” on them. They seemed a bit unusual to me, so I bought them. I found them on page 12 of Utica catalog 67. No506 "Rib-Joint" Heavy Duty Pliers, 10”. I was a bit skeptical about the pivot being original, which is either of a different alloy or was plated for some reason, while the two halves are bare (rusted) steel. But a look on eBay revealed similar examples. I think they will clean up pretty nice.
Here’s some on eBay:

Edit: added “after cleanup” photos.

Holy cow ! Yesterday I just installed new forearm screws in a model 12 that I bought for my Dad about a month ago. The 2 screws alone cost me 15.00 !!!
I have to say, I have NEVER EVER bought a gun for 1.00 or 2.00 and I've bought and traded a LOT of them over the years.

Amazing deal. Sweet !

That's why I love to see what people pick up on this thread. Love to see the amazing finds some people stumble on.

Ok so, about this Atomic Rock! I was at an Estate sale Saturday and rummaging around in the garage on the workbench. I see piles of random things. Looking under stuff and found this rounded piece of tile with writing on it. Says it was found at the explosion center in Hiroshima. I guess this person sent it to this man at some point. the date written on it is June 5, 1951. I felt like it was a pretty neat piece. got it for a $1. wish I knew more of the story about this.

Wow! What an interesting piece!

Still at the Block sale: A Zero Halliburton Aluminum Suitcase. $5 - could not leave it!

attachment.php

I always wanted one of those cases. 35 years ago when I was dreaming of owning a Hasselblad 120 camera I dreamed of it in one of those cases. These were the BOMB before Pelican cases came out. If I saw one for the right price today, I'd have to buy it just because. I'm sure I'd find something to put in it.

Outlaw, I am always in awe of your finds. You have so many and some so obscure, I have to ask, do you pick up stuff to resell or are you just a "collector" ? That wasn't me being nosy, just curios.

I found a few sales Friday. The first one was an 80 year-old man moving from a rural house to retirement. I bought a good wheelborrow (no photo) for $5.00, and the red heat gun for $3.00. Both work like new.

The second sale had a few tools, but I wasn't there in time for the best stuff. I did find a P&C 1/2" drive speed handle, Craftsman V 3/8" extension, Stainless? Medical? pliers, Crescent #21 round-nose pliers, and a Vlchek WBH 15/16 x 1 DBE for $2.00.

The medical pliers are marked 110 SR and what looks like a large W overstamped with two S's. The other handle is marked "MADE IN U.S. OF A". With the wider points on the end of the needle noses, and flat mating surfaces with a relief behind them, I thnk they are for a specific purpose, perhaps suturing?

More in the next post.

I found another sale that had tools. I bought a large can of antisieze, two Adjustable brand 4" c-clamps, Stanley diagonal cutters, a Proto 3/8" drive ratchet, two small machinist clamps with wing bolts, and an "Einhander" 6" wrench. Total was $10.00.

The wrench is marked * EINHANDER 6" on one side, and * GANZ STAHL * on the other side. The A on the EINHANDER has the double dots over it (umlaut) so I am sure this is German. Ganz Stahl means completely (or totally) steel. I checked it against various size nuts, and it works well from 11/32" hex up to 1/2" (and probably 13 MM), but won't open enough for 9/16". It is not marked with a country of origin.

Nice, great when vintage guns are saved from destruction, purchased cheap, and in the hands of good people.

I think a rock half-blasted with 700-million-year half-life Uranium-235 and sold by The Priest of Sairenji as a souvenir of Hiroshima could be a Garage Sale Thread first. I could be wrong. We'd need to get a read from the previous hosts.

Got home and one was a Remington model 12 and the other is a model 31 barrel that looks to be NOS.

Very small haul this weekend. Forgot to snap a picture but I got a ziploc bag of assorted sockets for $3. Included Mac, Blackhawk, Truth, Challenger, and Proto. About 35 sockets in all.

The funny thing was a bag of mixed China and USA Craftsman was on the table for $25. I just passed it by and was happy with my $3 find.

Facebook Marketplace got me again. Spent too much time looking and found this. Happened to be a 20 minute round trip, and I was heading out to the Post Office anyhow.
The Craftsman socket are all =v= .The Cornwell ratchet needs a rebuild,I have another that needs to go back as well,so another Post Office trip will be in my future.
Sockets from Plomb,Snap On,Williams, a single socket marked R-1218 Made in U.S.A.
About 20 lbs of files, Pipe wrenches from Fuller and Craftsman,a small Bonney specialty socket ,misc wrenches, chisels, etc. still sorting and cleaning.

I will need a couple handles if anyone has a lead/stockpile/scrapped/etc .
Also a tutorial on rivets would be great.

 That thing is cool! If you had a Tesla car, that would be a neat thing to stick in the back window or dashboard just to see how long it took someone to see it, know what it was, get the association, and say something to you about it.

Yikes. That ***** and not in a good way. EDIT: OleSlew beat me to that one!

------------------------------------------------------

I stayed home to get some things done. There was no humidity and it was a perfect day for chores. Consequently, I missed both of my flea markets. The Patron Saint of Pickers has been smiling down on me lately so I figure I had better not push my luck. I did manage to get some hobby things done, too. I removed the latch from the donor machinists' chest (Update to come later today...). I did the first half of a repair on the Plomb box hinge (Update to come maybe tomorrow on Plomb thread...). I pasted a reproduction decal on my Spezial Werkzuegfabrik Feuerbach (SWF) All-Inches Wrench set box (Update already posted...). And I took some photos of items from last weekend and this week.

Here is that corny Craftsman 4-way screwdriver. I am so out of it I really have no idea if this is common or rare, 40 years old or 4 years old, etc. EDIT: I just noticed the "WF" (Western Forge) code. So I guess 1960's, maybe 1970's?

That rectangular Sears Craftsman log is late 1970's to 1980's. May have gone into the early 1990's

Yep, travel Cribbage board

Is there a pocket to store the pins in it somewhere?

That's All I saw in the area I got it. It was actually on his garage workbench.

Little. Green. Book.

I did some google search and found several others. they say its a roof tile off a temple and that it experienced 5-6000C for a 1/10 of a second at detonation. Hence the bubbled part of the tile. I noticed on like it is in the Canada War Museum! Linked herehttps://www.warmuseum.ca/collections/artifact/1053632/

Here's the Craftsman box that has become a donor for others so they can be complete. This one just sits by the welder for clamps and supplies.

Picked up some stuff thru CL...

Two Stanley #7 corrugated planes and small unmarked block plane and another tool for $30. Going back thru the shop a second time I noticed some presses. Oh yeah, he had a lot of presses. I picked up the Greenerd No. 1 arbor press for $20. Then I saw the Delta Super 900 RAS. I didn't plan on coming home with any new woodworking machines but I just couldn't pass up the Delta RAS. Love the old vintage Delta!!!!

I'll try to clean up the planes they are pretty rusty and also try to find out their age. If anyone has any thoughts on dating them please let me know.

I'm curious who knows what the remaining tool is for without looking it up? :-0

From time to time I'll post WTB ads on CL. In 2015, I had such an ad posted about woodworking hand tools. Someone replied via email in Jan 2016 saying they had some of the tools I was looking for. I replied back but never heard from him again. I think I made one more attempt a few months later but nothing. Well, last week I remembered that guy and recalled he'd left his phone number so I called and left a message. He called me back while I was on another pick. I explained I was busy and asked if I could call him back in a few hours. "Sure" he said. This morning I remembered I was supposed to call him back. :) Doh! I called he said I could come out anytime. I let him know I was on my way to see what he had. He had a lot but he's still using most of it. Lots of grinders and old tool boxes and metal lathes and some vises. None of those were for sale. :-(

However, I did pick up 2 Stanley #7 corrugated planes and small unmarked block plane and another tool for $30. Going back thru his shop a second time later I noticed some presses. Oh yeah, he had a lot of presses. I picked up the Greenerd No. 1 arbor press for $20. Then I saw the Delta Super 900 RAS. I asked if it was for sale and he said he had the Craftsman RAS "over there" and he "needed to keep one of them". Kind of talking to himself he said he "had about $125 into the Delta". I asked if that's what he'd sell it for and he said yes. I said "Sold!". I didn't plan on coming home with any new woodworking machines but I just couldn't pass up the Delta RAS. Love the old vintage Delta!!!!

I'll try to clean up the planes they are pretty rusty and also try to find out their age. If anyone has any thoughts on dating them please let me know.

Thanks alinc! I've used that before on some other Stanley planes but forgot about it. I have Patrick Leach's 'Blood & Gore" website bookmarked. I'll be bookmarking this one as well. According to the flowchart (which you probably know is for the #4 Bench plane, one of these #7 planes is a Type 15 from 1931-1932 and the other is a Type 11 from 1910-1918. There are definitely some discrepancies when I look at the features but that could be simply the difference in how #4s were marked versus #7s. ???

At least I feel pretty confident these are both pre-WWII which is AWESOME! Now to see how well I can get them cleaned up and ready to use again. This will be the first time I've attempted to restore a plane.

This is fun and life is good! :)

Really slow around here lately, really tough to find anything of interest. The Diamond 18" adjustable was my only find for the weekend, half a dozen yard sales and a flea market. It's like new, might not have ever been used. Is there another name for this type of adj. wrench?

As I was posting, I remembered I hadn't posted the only thing I found at a different flea market a couple weeks ago, this Bahco 15" adj. wrench, also like new, no rust, just a little dusty. Kind of funny, seller had it sitting in a huge wooden trunk, with 4 other smaller adjustable wrenches in it. Had a sign on it "selling all complete $25.00". I picked up the Bahco and asked if he could sell it separate. He shrugged his shoulders, "yea, I guess". "How much?" "I don't know, ten, twenty cents?" :shocking: Me "Here take a dollar, I only work with paper money."

Is the nutcracker for sale?

HS,
Way to go! Did you recognize or have to look it up? First one I've seen like that. You probably already know what's on the other side but here's the rest of the tool.

Really slow around here lately, really tough to find anything of interest. The Diamond 18" adjustable was my only find for the weekend, half a dozen yard sales and a flea market. It's like new, might not have ever been used. Is there another name for this type of adj. wrench

They are called “Auto Wrenches”. Here are a couple of Barcalo examples.

Reading Oregon rock crusher's latest post on Rileysan's new "Island of Misfit Tools" thread, linked here, made me remember that I wanted to comment on a pregnant typo upthread...

I bought a good wheelborrow (no photo) for $5.00, and the red heat gun for $3.00. Both work like new.
If a wheelbarrow is to move stuff around in, a wheelborrow must be for your neighbor’s to move stuff around in!
