Sears Hometown in Oklahoma City, OK has abruptly closed recently: https://www.thelayoff.com/t/1225BaVG
Didn't find any local news coverage, but the location's official page used to be here, and it's already been removed: http://www.searshometownstores.com/home/ok/oklahoma-city/4102
(OKC lost its last full-line Sear store in summer 2018: https://oklahoman.com/article/5600098/oklahoma-citys-last-sears-store-set-to-close )

And another full-line store stealth closure came out yesterday 11/20/19: Sears in Harford Mall, Bel Air, MD - https://patch.com/maryland/belair/sears-closing-store-harford-mall - "scheduled for liquidation sales in mid-December and closing in mid-February"

There's also something weird going on with gift cards. I haven't seen anyone on GJ talk about having Sears GCs, but get out from under them fast if you do. Old Sears gift cards issued before 2018 were voided during the bankruptcy, that's old news. But in just the past few days, a problem has reportedly been mysteriously cropping up with 2019 gift cards not working at some stores, but the gift card still works online. Some of the affected stores are on a recent closing list but were not supposed to stop accepting gift cards yet. Other affected stores are not even on any closing lists yet. Other stores are unaffected and gift cards still work fine, so far. Employees have no idea why it's happening and have been asking about the problem on Pebble, the Sears internal message board, with no answers reported.

WTF? They cleared old gift cards. First I have heard of that. I have one from a warranty exchange, as I used expiring points to pay for the replacement. I guess I'm more surprised they let people keep the Monopoly money, but not GCs arguably paid for with actual money.

Yeah, it was part of all the convoluted bankruptcy proceedings. Eddie 'generously' agreed to have Transform honor ( = accept liability for) SHC's GCs, but only back to about 1 year before the bankruptcy asset negotiation. But apparently a few states that have stricter gift card regulations (I'm sure California is one... no idea about Michigan) didn't allow Sears/Kmart to refuse to honor GCs as long as the stores are still in business. People in those states are allowed to bring their dead GC in-person to a store, and the employees can look up the value the old GC was supposed to have left on it, and load that value onto a new GC. I'm not sure if Hometowns have access to that system too, or if only a full-line Sears/Kmart can do it.

If you're stuck with a dead GC and no more nearby stores to try at, maybe try asking a Personal Shopper if they can send you a replacement GC. It's not something I've ever heard anyone talk about doing with a PS, but surely someone left in that ghost-town HQ office can work the GC system like the stores can.

Update! According to this reddit thread posted 2 months ago, Sears.com chat is able to reissue GCs for people in any state!

When this problem began after Transform Holdco took over earlier this year, I just called Sears customer service and they emailed me a new e-gift card number.

The new card amount was actually rounded UP, so it worked out great. :D

The HQ (Hoffman Estates) layoffs that I'd mentioned in the past couple weeks were apparently slicing most remaining departments in half, plus getting rid of ALL of the "Online Item Build" specialists and managers... these were the people who actually get new products added to the Sears/Kmart websites! It sounds like they're not planning on having much to add from now on, just a downward spiral of out-of-stocks.

SF apparel office reportedly lost 80% of its employees this month. "the only people left is just the clean up crew forced to get things in order before the fiscal year ends."

https://www.thelayoff.com/t/120dCyBu

"Most of the buyers were let go so there will be no more new product in the stores. They were allowed to buy a little bit of spring merchandise and then everything was shut down for buying. Means they are not planning on having any stores left by the summer."

https://www.thelayoff.com/t/128y4Kfp

Certainly looks like Transformco will either file a liquidating Chapter 11 or sell to/merge with another retail chain by Spring. Maybe Fast Eddie’s going to buy JC Penny?

I'm not sure what the heck he has in mind at this point. The latest theory I saw on the layoff forum was that he could gradually close everything except the famously profitable Guam Kmart, and just keep that one store open for however many years it takes for his other businesses to use up the tax benefits of Sears's accrued losses. (Those carryover losses are what people used to think were going to motivate him to keep *all* the remaining stores going after the bankruptcy acquisition, but apparently it still counts as long as any amount of retail operation continues.) I'm guessing the Guam Kmart already has its own separate distribution system, getting shipments directly from other companies, since most of the stuff it sells has never appeared in any mainland Kmart.

That may be true except I have heard inklings that the Kmart in Guam was sold to Wesfarmers from Australia earlier this year from a reputable source from within the company but I/we an only speculate. I will see what additional info about that store I can come up with. Speaking of Kmart, now that we only have ONE left here open in Michigan, I stopped in for my weekly pilgrimage to find the store BUSY with not one, not two, not three or four, but FIVE registers open plus the service desk!?! It literally felt like going back in time to the mid-90s when I remember shopping there as a kid with the flurry of activity!

People have been talking about the possibility of that happening for years, but it hasn't actually materialized. :dunno:

Wow. I'd have only expected that amount of staffing on BF weekend, the weekend before Christmas, and during a liquidation.

Big news showed up in my mailbox today... Northern Tool stores are now selling some Craftsman tools! :wtf: On the mailer, I specifically recognized the unique Craftsman vise-grip pliers set, which as I was talking about a couple weeks ago, doesn't have a release lever sticking out like others do. (Sears stopped selling this version, presumably due to supplier problems, and recently replaced it with a nothing-special release-lever version.) :headscrat

NT has some, but not all, of the items listed on their website. One of them received a review on 11/10/19. https://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/category_craftsman

I haven't found any news coverage of this rollout, or any discussion of it elsewhere yet.

Here are a few photos of the the mailer.

Now if you want weird, these aren’t Stanley Craftsman either. Blow up the pic on the toolbox and it clearly says Sears Brands Management LLC.

Did Eddie find some obscure loophole that allows him to market a completely independent line of Craftsman?

That confirms what I was suspecting based on the pre-SBD pliers. So weird that not only can they get away with adding another retailer now, but that they would send stuff to NT that Sears stores no longer get.

Now I know SBD got irritated when he tried to sell the Ultimate Collection stuff, but I wonder if he didn’t find something during the discovery of that case that allows for this. I’m pretty sure it said he could source and sell Craftsman branded products through Sears or for Sears but I wonder if it was worded in such a way that so long as Sears exists in some form he can do this, and also sell to outside retailers presuming they buy through a Sears entity (Sears Brands perhaps?).

If this is the case SBD really blew it on this whole deal.

Annoyed me last order it would not let me pay with PP; but required a CC so that it can save it in your account and seemed to be unremovable.

I think the cart update did this. You’re almost better off using the blue credit card anyway (plus or whatever it’s called) because it almost always gives 5% off all tools.

As part of the deal, Sears retained the rights to manufacture Craftsman tools independently of Stanley.

Yeah I noticed this too. I had to pay for my order a few weeks ago, and the card in their record has expired. I could not find a way to enter the new card for one time transaction, and not sure how to remove it after I completed the transaction.

Right, but it was supposed to be only using the existing contracts already in place before the SBD sale, so it seemed like adding a whole new retailer was more change than was intended to be allowed. :dunno:

Another thought I had about the Northern Tool situation, why they'd have things Sears no longer has... perhaps the manufacturers of those tools are among the many companies no longer willing to risk Sears not paying them, so Sears can't get their stuff for Sears stores anymore, but they're able to get paid by NT in this case so they were willing to make more just for NT.

If it works like some other sites I've seen (such as Masterpass), you have to add a different card (perhaps an empty prepaid Visa/Mastercard you might have laying around from a rebate?) and set that as your primary card, before you can remove the previous card. Once you've given them one card, you can never not have at least one card still on file.

Hmm, just noticed Sears.com has very-recently changed their search radius back to 50 miles. (It had been set to 100 miles since about a year ago, to try to hide the impact of all the store closures.) This is the thing on product pages where it says "Store Pickup Unavailable within 50 miles of [your zip code]", or shows available stores within that number of miles.

FWIW...i had a few points expiring tonight and needed to make an order, so i asked chat if they could provide free shipping (like theyve been doing since the blowout sale) and they didnt even give me any pushback--none of that, 'pay full shipping and we'll refund the amount' bs like they used to do. as with everything sears, a huge YMMV

Thank you for posting this! I was about to place an order to a store in another state that I'd need to drive to next time I travel, but tried chat and had the same nice experience as you. $30 order, $2 OOP, shipped free.

I was almost ready to give up when they removed the PS option.

Huh, nice. I'd thought it was a lucky fluke when he posted that, but now it's repeatable. Maybe I shouldn't have deleted all the home-shipping-required items from my wish list recently, darn. We'll see how long they keep offering that, maybe I won't be completely stuck with in-store-only once my store goes into liquidation mode and drops off the website.

Were you using any freecash offers or coupons on that order with the free shipping, or just points?

fwiw i went platinum last year due to picking up a few tool cabinets as well as a washer/dryer combo and chat has been super nice to me. not sure if platinums getting more slack is a thing or not, but my parents bought more stuff than i did but split them up under two accounts and didnt go platinum and theyve chatted to ask for small things that ive already gotten away with and are denied. ive even chatted under their account and been stonewalled, so i know i said the right things in the right way. but that was always my theory. plus i dont argue with the reps and always ask nicely and wish them a good day when we're done. any way you look at it, its sears so ymmv

I am still receiving the 100 miles interval when I search but had a new message pop up. The latest is that "we are unable to locate your item in the 13 closest stores to you". I didn't even know there were that many store within a hundred miles of me unless they are counting Hometown formats; but those items I searched for aren't found at Hometown stores.
Tomorrow I will be making the trek northward and stopping by to the only Sears within two hours of me. When that store goes, I don't know what/where I'll go donate my money to. The SYW program really was a windfall for me. Perhaps we should start a Post Sears thread next...

Ah, that might have helped. I think the VIP program (silver/gold/platinum) is shutting down at the end of the year, so your luck in that regard might diminish in a few weeks.

SD has been really excited about this garage door opener for the past few days. Availability is limited, some people were seeing ship-to-home available in their area, but at least for me the only option is ship-to-store with a 3-week wait.

Craftsman 3/4 hp Smart Belt Drive Garage Door Opener
https://www.sears.com/craftsman-57915-3-4-horsepower-ultra/p-00957915000P
$149.99 sale, $269.99 regularly
eligible for the $100-back-on-$100 daily deal

It is made by Chamberlain and is compatible with the Chamberlain MyQ app. (Ignore the complaint about the old Craftsman-specific app being discontinued.) Someone who got theirs installed today said they also got it to communicate with "IFTTT, Google Home, & Amazon Alexa". Also comes with a keypad for entry if you don't want to use the high-tech stuff.

Yeah, I've only got a few months left now (and only 1-2 weeks of ship-to-store), unless free home shipping with low OOP continues for non-VIPs.

I had been keeping notes of what I'd bought the last couple years in a basic list, now I'm in the process of finally putting everything (including the earlier purchases) into a spreadsheet so I can figure out a grand total when this comes to an end for me. It's a hassle because the order history pages are so screwy.

$5 off $15 freecash (thank you for your assistance with that a while back!) plus points.

I have zero status that I’m aware of.

I’ve kept a spreadsheet since I discovered the points game 2 years ago, including 1) real item value (not inflated MSRP) 2) any OOP expense and 3) net profit for any items sold on CL/eBay.

When this all comes to an end, it might be fun to compare notes.

Sounds great. In the past, when chat would do free shipping, it usually had to be without any other freecash/coupons, cancelling out the savings; you had to go through the PS to do both together.

https://www.sears.com/craftsman-57915-3-4-horsepower-ultra/p-00957915000P
$149.99 sale, $269.99 regularly
eligible for the $100-back-on-$100 daily deal

It is made by Chamberlain and is compatible with the Chamberlain MyQ app. (Ignore the complaint about the old Craftsman-specific app being discontinued.) Someone who got theirs installed today said they also got it to communicate with "IFTTT, Google Home, & Amazon Alexa". Also comes with a keypad for entry if you don't want to use the high-tech stuff.

Saw this on slickdeals and it does indeed look like a fantastic deal. If I hadn't snagged two of the b1381 units for $99 each I'd likely grab a pair of these.

I’ve kept a spreadsheet since I discovered the points game 2 years ago, including 1) real item value (not inflated MSRP) 2) any OOP expense and 3) net profit for any items sold on CL/eBay.

When this all comes to an end, it might be fun to compare notes.

I've been doing Sears points stuff to some extent since early 2013, but it was a lighter pace till early/mid 2017. Haven't sold anything, just been getting stuff I wanted for myself.

I'm doing columns for 'Price Paid' (what an item was on sale for at the time I bought it), 'Full Price' (MSRP at the time I bought it - had to guesstimate on that for some of the older purchases), 'Price Paid+Tax', 'Full Price+Tax', 'Points/Coupons Used', and 'OOP Amount'. I decided it made the most sense to compare 'OOP Amount' to 'Price Paid+Tax' to get a percentage, since most of the points/coupons usage is worth ~8% more than their face value due to eliminating sales tax.

Actually, I wonder if Eddie settled up with these vendors by agreeing not to sell the existing warehoused products they already had on hand through Sears/Kmart/SYW. He did reach agreements with some vendors at the time of the purchase agreement but the terms were never really disclosed. They could have sold remaining inventory to Northern Tool but I’m not sure about that tool box.

I just ordered one for my dad’s garage as he was being wishy washy and then will just end up missing out. Really any of the garage door openers are solid deals. Especially with the $100 on $100. I mean they’re already $30-50 cheaper than the comparable ones at most places without even taking the $100 into account. I’m probably gonna cash in one of my $75 or $100 weeks and get another 100 series one since my one is over 10 years old. That one is identical to the one I already installed so they probably switched vendors more than once (those might be Genies if I remember). Since my mounting is already set up for that style anyway.

The amount I’ve gotten since SYW was invented is absolutely insane. I don’t really resell things though. My garage looks like I robbed Sears. Nearly everything I own is from there. If it was available at Sears that’s probably where it came from. Thankfully much of the stuff I got will be enough to last a lifetime because things will likely never be as cheap again.
