Got this box a couple weeks ago from my father in law. He came across is on FB marketplace I think. I’ve seen a few of these in person but I think this is the nicest.

Any pics of drawers open? Nice box!

Thanks guys. I’m pretty stocked up on boxes and had no intentions on adding another but this one just fell in my lap. I filled it with gun cleaning/smithing supplies for now so that it justifies a spot in the garage. Here are a few pics of the insides.

As first reported in the 2020 Garage Sale thread, I picked up a near-complete postwar No. 4810 Spark Plug Socket Set at the flea market this morning. I am not a big postwar collector, but it was a throw-in when we were haggling over the price of several loose tools.

attachment.php

Missing sockets 40820 (5/8"), 40824 (3/4"), and B40828 (7/8").

The crinkle finish on the interior lid is preservation-worthy, and the badge is in excellent condition, but the exterior of the box is roached, and the compartment was so roached and caked with grime that I refused to even put the sockets back in the box without soaking it in Simple Green, which stripped most of the paint. Fine by me, because I am going to mask off the lid and try to give the rest of the box a crinkle finish 'barn find' treatment.

I was happy to see the 48L L-handle in the box, even though it needs a little "elbow surgery". :)

I know that Don has a prewar and a wartime version of this same set, and I know that Rileysan has this same postwar version. I am curious how the 13/16" socket is marked in their sets, since neither Don or Brian commented on it, as far as I could find through searches. Maybe I missed it.

The 13/16" socket in this set has a "B" prefix to the model number, which reads, "B 40826".

attachment.php

And it's marked "NOT GUARANTEED".

attachment.php

I am speculating that the 7/8" socket (which I am missing) is also marked "NOT GUARANTEED", since it also has a "B" prefix before the model number (B 40828) in the 1943 catalog.

Similiar to the 9/16" sockets used on connecting rod nuts that many mfgr's (including Snap/on) would not guarantee, the B 40826 socket with the 13/16" service opening has been taken down to very thin walls for access.

attachment.php

And, like a self-fulfilling prophecy, it is split.

attachment.php

At least it will make for a good, self-contained informative side-story.

'See that split?' Turns socket on end.
'Look at how thin it is.' Turns socket to the marking at the base.
'That's why it's not guaranteed.' :)

HAHA! For sure. Other than the break and the split, though, the sockets are in great condition. Handsome, too. I am not a big fan of chrome, but that and the satin base and the knurling and markings make for a attractive appearance.

That is the special Buick thin wall spark plug socket that came with some of the sets. I’ve just seen it in the catalog. I don’t have one. I actually have a prewar set that I’m working on and a postwar set like that one that I found at an estate sale. I have wartime sockets but no box for them.

Thanks, Don. EDIT: There's no annotation like that in the 1943 catalog. What catalog are you seeing that in?

Having trouble resizing, but anyone have a S-K pat pend 1/2 drive without any other numbers but a P stamped in it? The end has a off center cross in it too.

Thanks

One of the things we found at a local estate sale last Friday was this empty postwar S-K 3/8” drive socket set box. Yesterday I filled it up with tools that I had on hand but it looks like I’m going to need some diamond logo extensions and a u-joint to complete it. The universal sockets actually aren’t part of the set. I added them and a couple of 8 point sockets just for a place to keep them.

While I had the S-K sets out, I took a picture of this #4015 1/2” drive knurled socket set. I substituted an extension for the impossible to find crossbar.

Lately, every time I walked into the garage, my eyes were drawn to this large wartime S-K carry box I found recently that a previous owner had painted gray. https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showpost.php?p=8289115&postcount=1887
Another collector turned me onto a company called Midwest Military that offers several shades of military green paint in spray cans. I found a color they call “Signal Corps Green, Type One” that isn’t totally flat like most Olive Drab paints and looks to be a pretty good match for some of my vintage toolboxes. I sprayed a little Plomb 1/4” drive box as a test and compared it to some other boxes and liked the results so I repainted the S-K box yesterday. Here are my color comparison pictures and the finished S-K box. The last shot is from the ‘43 catalog.

I seem to be on a little bit of a late 40's/early 50's SK 3/8-inch drive special socket set streak. If you recall, I found a partial 10-pc SK 3/8-inch drive spark plug socket set No. B4810 from that era last week, posted on the last page, post #1897, linked here. Today I found a partial 7-pc 3/8-inch drive swivel socket set (see Pic 1). It was frozen solid in the bottom of a bucket and the sockets were caked with old stubborn grime.

It cleaned up nicely.

attachment.php

Contents include 3/8" (40612), 7/16" (40614), 1/2" (40616), 5/8" (40620), 11/16" (40622), and 3/4" (40624). See Pics 3 through 7.

Note that the 5/8" 40620 is a 6-pointer, and, that it's stamped on the service opening piece, not the female drive piece like all the others. I'm not sure if that's original to this set or from a different (perhaps later?) set. I'm pretty sure the missing socket is a 9/16" (40618).

The closest catalog I have access to is the 1943, and at that time, it was a 6-pc set, starting with 7/16" (40614), and it doesn't show any 6-point sockets. 3bay posted a 7-pc set from the same era as this set early on in this thread and his are all 12-pointers. So, again, not sure what's going on with that. If anyone knows, let me know.

Roy sent me a set recently to complete a toolbox project I was working on. Here is a 50s catalog listing along with my new set. I would have to double check to see whether they are 6 or 12 point. Maybe Roy will remember.

I checked the universal set I got from Roy and they are all 12 point. It looks like the newer sockets are 6 point, based on my loose ones.

Roy also sent me the extensions that I was missing for this set and they arrived this afternoon. Here is a picture of the completed set plus some other ‘50s sets. The sets on the sides are kind of a mix of tools and vintages.i

Picked up a partial Wayne set this AM, but I had the missing sockets at home, along with a breaker bar and shorty extension. Nothing that was listed in the catalogs, but will keep me looking for the right ratchet and extensions. (I have a few newer and older ones, but the only Wayner is dedicated to a set.)

Hit me up if you want to fill it out. I picked up a wayne 3/8" ratchet a few weeks ago. I am pretty sure I have the rest to fill it out.

Started with an SK obsession and graduated to Plomb. SK is too easy here to collect. In about 2 years I found over a 1000 pieces of SK. Now I am slowly parting it off to super focus on Plombs. So if anyone needs any set fillers please let me know.
Yeah, for a so-called 'Plomb guy' he seems to be a neverending font of SK extras!
If r_olson is missing anything (which I doubt ;) I've got some extra Wayne pieces as well. [emoji106]

Is that a 3/8” set? Or 1/2”. I have 1/2” SK Wayne 40170 Long handle that seems to fit that bill. I’m out of town til Wednesday but I can post pics if interested.
