Well this *****. I have a brand new 7" Craftsman wire wheel. But that dang thing is too rough.

I'm having a hard time finding a 7" medium. What are you guys using. :headscrat

I could stick with my 6" wire wheel I have now. But then I might as well stick with that grinder too. Not likely. :wtf:
I feel your pain. I bought a 7" Weiler wheel but its, pretty course as well. 7" is tough.

I found an Anderson 01924 I think might be a medium. Wire size is .118 I believe. Is that a medium.

I have an 8" wire wheel (Anderson stainless steel) on my 3/4hp and it is bit hard on metal. It's great for knocking rust off, but for simple deburring, it can start to pit the metal. I'm thinking about getting a 6" just to drop the SFM (surface feet per minute) down. It's a pretty significant decrease from 8" to 6".

I had the same issue when looking for an 8" wire wheel for my Baldor grinder. I wanted a fine to medium wire and most hardware and bigbox stores only carry medium to course. First stick with a good USA brand like Weiler. Second go to their website and find the product number of the type of wire wheel you want. Then best place I found to get a match product number is ebay, very competitive, unless you prefer to go to a specific supplier and pay more.

Basically start with finding the product number you want then search online for the best price. Hardest part will be finding a 7" wire wheel with your specs. I'll be doing this for my latest 6" CM grinder, looking for fine wheels for both sides. David

^^^This.

Last week, I thought I had a splinter in one of my fingers, but couldn't dig it out. Carved away some flesh with a pocket knife until I could get to it. Turned out it was a piece of wire about 1/3" long.

Just think of what that would do to your eye!

Yup, been there, done that. I've also had them trying to poke me to death because they were lodged in my clothes...

I have a bunch of grinders with 1/2" and 5/8" shafts and no guards or rests, just the shafts sticking out.

I intend to use them for buffing, and maybe one for wire wheeling.

What is a good place to get collars for this? And what kinds of buffs are best. I want to set up a number of them so I don't have to change buffs.

So a few weeks ago I spied a nice pre-block(?) craftsman grinder on Cl for $50 and immediately purchased it from a really nice old gentleman. Great grinder, excellent condition. A few weeks later the phone rings and it's the guy I purchased the grinder from and he says hey, I found some parts for the grinder - if you want them you can have them. I did. A owners manual, new wire wheel, new quench tray, new rubber feet gommets, and some new felt pads. The pads are 5 1/2" and about 3/8" thick. Does anyone know what these felt pads are for? Thanks - Jim

How does that shade attach to the light. Is it clamped on like the newer ones. Or is it just pushed on. I think I have one just like it if it just pushes on.

RH - Nice find.

It would be a pre-Block if the model number pre-fix is 115.
It is a round top Block if the prefix is 257 or 397.

There's a better explanation of what is/is not a Block in the '.... What's the Fuss?' thread, linked in my signature line.

BTW - What is the HP (1/3 is my guess) and model number (397.1958?)

You may want to check VintageMachinery.com's publication reprints. They may be interested in a scanned copy of your original manual.

ALL: anybody have a set up to collect some of the dust and debris from their blocks or other grinders and buffer?

I saw this on Craigslist yesterday and if it wasn't $150 and in such rough shape i'd probably buy it to set up with a good grinder instead of the POS on it in the picture.

McB: did you find another way to upgrade the Blockmeister? Pup really did do a fantastic job on those metal labels didn't he?

I thought about getting a small cheap shop vac, some flex hose and a "Y" and hooking it up to the rear exhaust. But I haven't got that far yet,,,lol.

Here is a grinder I just got, It's in good shape but missing the tool rests that mount in the quench tray. Any ideas where to find some? Or pictures of any that people have made?uploadfromtaptalk1460421528597.jpguploadfromtaptalk1460421544897.jpg

I did not see that, thanks. I'm guessing my guards would have to be drilled and tapped to use those?

Moto X

Probably, Thats what I was thinking when you said yours attach to the quench tray.
if I should come across any cheap at the fleamarket this season, I'll let you know.
you can have them for cost and shipping if I would.

Thanks. I'm thinking I need rests like these, but it would be an option to use the other rests if it's not a big deal to drill and tap the guards. uploadfromtaptalk1460424280074.jpg

Just so you know I only have 1 set of the tool rests left. I promise I'm not just bull shiting you so you'll buy a set. Someone will buy them,,,lol. Just a matter of time.

As far as tapping your guards go. If you look down in there you might be able to see a boss. That's a round section to accommodate the hole for the bolt. But it's hard to find if you don't know what you're looking for.

But if you pull a wheel off you can see it for sure.

I don't know your skill level. So let me tell you what I'm goinna do,,,lol. If you don't want to tap the holes, and cant find anyone to do it, if you buy a set of tool rests and pay shipping both ways for your guards, I'll tap the holes for you.

But I will not be held responsible if something should get damaged. That would be very unlikely though. Just covering may ***. :p

So take a look and see if you have the boss. If not you could just drill a hole and JB Weld a flange nut to the inside to hold the bolt.

Heres what you're looking for.

CalsXS2 nice job on those rests,. Always wished I had a mill, even a small one.
(all I'd have room for anyways)
I was lucky I guess, both of my blocks were compleat.
Are you a machinist by trade?

I'm going to precision machinist school at the age of 55,,,,lol. My Son made me go instead of sitting in the chair all day feeling sorry for myself because I went through cancer. But I'm on break for awhile because of the chemo is messing with my brain. :willy_nil

I made these on a manual mill at my friends shop.

Thanks! Cal did a nice job on these tool rests.

Thanks Ziggy. Glad you like them.

I like the "CAL" tool rest. Can I use it,,,lol.

I also like how you used the extension arm with the slot showing. Truthfully, I thought they went the other way. I guess that's because that's the way they came on mine.

Your way gives a much smoother range of motion. The way I had them kinda makes you put them in a certain spot. I wonder which way is correct.

Hell. I'm going to have to market them as "Improved adjust-ability"....

Another option I like is if you mount the tool rest on the other side of the arm. It's more centered that way. And again. Works smoother.

Now don't forget guys. You can use just the tool rest with out the arm on the smaller grinders. Just sayin. :p
