The under hood light is 1350 lumens on bright, the new M12 rover service light is 700 and can pivot. I'd highly recommend using the new service light (i have two, they are amazing) with the built-in magnet instead and save money as they are about $59 each.

https://toolguyd.com/milwaukee-m12-rover-led-flood-light-2367-102020/

AcmeTools (in-stock), AceTools (in-stock), ToolNut, CPO Tools, all seem to have them already. HD doesn't carry it yet.
Thanks for the input, this might be the wiser buy

Nothing beats the underhood light when doing engine work. It's not even the brightness of the light, but the fact that it spans the whole engine bay so you don't have to move lights around.

Exactly why I use the underhood light.

I even use it on the interior hooked to the roof with both doors open.

This was exactly my thought behind my post. I use to use my friends snap-on one but since he got his own shop I no longer have access to it lol. Also I use to take it into the attic (pole barn) for some lighting and the retractable arms/hooks were perfect to hand the bar on the wooden trusts with a nice wide angle spread!

I use the M12 underhood light indoors for my green screen background (teacher) as the rocket tripod and other lights were not spread out enough and caused a spotlight effect.

I've found many unexpected uses for my underhood light:
  • It spans nicely across 3-4 rafters in my attic and loft, so I've used it several times when doing electrical work up there
  • It sits nicely on my gutter next to my deck, which is helpful for grilling in the dark
  • the hook on the end lets me hang it in bathrooms and small rooms when I'm have the circuit turned off to do electrical work

Definitely happy with the purchase.

Is there some advantage to those M12 lights as opposed to battery powered camera lighting?

I think you're alluding to the idea that a light is a light, they all exist in the same competitive marketplace and are somewhat commoditized by the fact that their output is "just light". I agree with you.

That said, yes, of course there are advantages to milwaukee lights. They make so many different models it's hard to say, and you haven't named a specific camera light to compare, so here are some possible things: uses batteries you already have and available with high capacity if runtime is a problem, most are 5 year warranty length and built well enough to not need it, and most are adapted pretty well for some specific task (why they have so many)

myself, I have mostly ryobi lights, since a light a is light, and I find milwaukee to be the wrong level of price : performance. I was in a bind and ended up with both an m18 2360 flood light ($100 on sale) and a close ryobi competitor P721 ($30-40 on sale), and they're effectively the same light. maybe I could drop the m18 from a few feet higher without breaking? but that's not worth $70, to me at least. oh yeah, the dimming options on the m18 are better, and I do value that. but still, not $70 better

another part of the battery angle... major power tool brand batteries are very overpriced for what they are.

unless there was something special about a milwaukee light, i wouldn't want to waste charge/discharge cycles on those expensive batteries.

high-quality 18650 batteries are about $6 and last for many cycles.

i don't use cordless work lights. i use corded work lights and head lamps.

i'm wondering if there are nice work lights out there that just take 18650 or 21700 batteries. anyone know?

Missed it because I was ignoring alerts on this page I understand some discussion but take the m12 light vs everything else to its own thread please.

How dare you guys use a thread in a way that Tduby doesn't approve of, didn't any of you bet the memo that the Hot Deals section is for his sole benefit?

this is a good point, I try to buy as few batteries as I can live with because they're wear items, even just sitting there. although I don't consider charge cycles my limit (I won't rack up 1000-1500 to wear one out), more just age (five years seems to be about where they really fall off). So, once I own the battery, I'm happy to get more uses for it. I won't be doing more than one charge cycle per day on average so the cycles are basically free (.8/day would be the point at which I'd accumulate ~1500 cycles in 5 years)

m12 batteries are the absolute worst offenders considering they're only 3 or 6 18650s

on the other hand, the M18 12Ah has gone on sale a few times for $120, that's actually not bad compared to the cost of 15 quality 21700 cells. it was cheaper than any quality e-bike battery I could find, so I bought a couple for my 36V ebike

I do the same with battery buying, I think Ive only bought 2, which was a 2pk of the M18 3.0s last year at CPO for $89.99.

Ive got a bumch of batteries, but theyre always from deals where they cant be returned, which is fine for me. I like have them as backups for items like the M12 Lanterns that can also charge phones/tablets, and the M12 & M18 power sources as well.

Link doesn't work for me...

"The link you clicked on is malformed. Contact the editor of the originating page."

Link is fine. Not sure it will be available in Canada, hopefully you have a uS shipping buddy.

FYI, this is not the "small" 3/8" impact. It is the old large one actually. I'd buy a ¼" hex Fuel impact driver with a socket adapter before I'd consider that. Surprised it's made still

This has been at the $150 mark for about a month now. I think its a fair deal if you sell of the stuff you don't need from the combo.

That combo Includes: one (2463-20) M12 3/8 IMP WRENCH, (2475-20) M12 inflator/air compressor, (48-22-9001) tradesman ratchet set - metric, (48-11-2401) M12 CP1.5 battery, (48-59-2401) M12 charger, contractor bag, ball inflation needle, resta chuck, schrader nozzl, belt hook

I’d rather just spend the $99 for the inflator, 2.0 battery, and charger. Another $50 for the impact, downgrade to 1.5 battery, the ratchet set, and bag isn’t worth the hassle to me. Nobody will want that weak impact (100ft/lb).

I've still got the 2451 which was literally v1.0 based off the original 2450 1/4" hex. This looks like the variant of the revised 2462 1/4" hex. But yeah, it's not brushless.

I keep my 2451 at the lathe with the appropriate hex socket for quickly reversing jaws. Huge time saver

From the HD clearance thread:
4. M18 tool + free 8.0 battery was fully stocked up

Do we know if any of these items are coded for easy battery (or tool) returns? How about dates of this promotion? It looked like a select few 8.0+tool items showed available; others weren't online, nor store.

So 1 of 2 things: maybe they are throttling by less online availability. Or I totally missed this promo in this thread?

The free 8.0 battery on select tools is available through 1/31 along with the other promos (DW, Makita, M18 Starter Kits and M12 + battery).

It is only available for a partial return via buying in store. The online deals cannot be broken up since it is counted as a single SKU. This deal has never been available to be broken up for separate returns online.

The following tools are available for the 8.0 Promo:
M18 12.0Ah Battery 48-11-1812 1003168607 $219.00
M18 Rocket Dual Power Tower Light 2131-20 1003168609 $229.00
M18 Fuel Super Sawzall 2722-20 1003989859 $249.00
M18 Fuel Circular Saw 2732-20 1003989806 $249.00
M18 Fuel Brad Nailer 2746-20 1004501352 $279.00

Thought I had seen this was in-store only. Think you buy one of these with a 8.0 battery and the battery rings free. That what you tried?

It's in-store only. A lot of stores do not know about the promo but it is a nationwide US contiguous promotion (sorry Alaska and Hawaii) that runs until 1/31. Promo automatically comes up at the register after scanning the merchandise.

Most of the time the only employees that know about the promos are the ones that actually take care of the tool department or if you run into a MET team member. The cashiers know about the ones they have run up recently but don't always know all of them. Customer service in my experience doesn't know anything about it.

From my experience, it is also best for customer service not to know about it since I return the batteries. I tried explaining it once when they cut off a promo a day early and the two ladies behind the counter were both VERY confused as to why I'd return a free battery as soon as I'd bought it. Any more explanation and I'm convinced they would have thought I was trying to steal from the store.

If you aren't sure if the store has the deal, just take the stuff to self checkout and you can always cancel if it doesn't ring up. Or do what I do and go to a regular register, tell the clerk you think there is a promo on the items and want to make sure it rings up correctly before you buy so they are ready to void the sale in advance. It usually saves some time if it doesn't work properly.

Can't seem to find the calculation right now, but how's the math end up working out on the 12.0 + 8.0 if you return the 8.0?

Are they using separate SKUs for any of these deals? A while back I did the M12 Installation kit and the 3/8 ratchet for free, and it didnt ring up as free. The guy had to go back and get a different 3/8 ratchet with a different SKU for it to work. :dunno:

https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showpost.php?p=8783737&postcount=5085

Looks like the 12.0Ah is $219, 8.0Ah is $199.

Add up:
(original price of "must buy" item) + (original price of "free" item) = (big number)

Now find the ratio or percentage:
(original price of "must buy" item) / (big number) = (ratio)

Return value for each is:
(ratio) x (original price of "must buy" item)
(ratio) x (original price of "free" item)

If the promo is buy 8.0Ah battery get ... free then the calc is:
199 + 219 = 418
199 / 418 = 0.4761
0.4761 x 199 = $94.74 for the 8.0Ah return value
0.4761 x 219 = $104.27 for the 12.0Ah

If the promo is buy ... get 8.0Ah battery free then the calc is:
219 + 199 = 418
199 / 418 = 0.5239
0.5239 x 199 = $104.26 for the 8.0Ah return value
0.5239 x 219 = $114.73 for the 12.0Ah
