This is an old Craftsman ratchet, round head fine tooth, I believe. What are my options as far as fixing it? Can I even find the parts for it? If I warranty it, what are my chances of getting an equivalent quality ratchet?

3/8 drive?

You can get a different craftsman ratchet from any sears.

Your local sears may give you a repair kit

Your local sears may have a rebuilt one to give you.

You can buy a repair kit for it from Cripe distributing if the ratchet has emotional attachment to you.

It is 1/2 inch drive. There is some attachment as it actually belongs to my dad. The part about turning it in doesn't really bother me, except for the possibility that I won't get an equivalent quality tool in exchange.

Awesome, thanks for the link. Any other ideas? The kit is great and I still might do that, but I was hoping to fix it for free through sears. I guess I won't know until I ask.

Careful, RP's at our sears are foreign now. Only the professional ones and some breaker bars are US.

Through Sears; the rebuild kits are no longer made for that ratchet. You would get different ratchets as a warranty exchange; either a new one off the hook or whatever rebuilt ratchets that have available. Anything new; will most likely be Chinese, unless you can convince them to give you a professional one as a replacement.

I had an experience recently that even though the kits ARE avalable on the sears parts website they would not repair the ratchet in store, but would only offer a used RP as a replacement. I tried 3 stores untill a GJ member with sears access got some kits and hooked me up ;-) At the time, the kits would have cost me about $20 each shipped from sears and cripe was not offering the 1/2 kits (link above) at the time.

My earlier thread is here:

craftsman doesnt make a "professional" ratchet.
They make premium, raised panel, thin profile and fully polished.
Just trying to save the OP confusion when he walks into a sears and ask for a professional ratchet when they dont market one under that name.

Options for fixing it have been well covered so far (NAPA, eBay, etc.).

If you're lucky, your local Sears might have some kits kicking around, it never hurts to ask or pick up a phone and call. They're discontinued, but they don't often break. When I went to have one repaired a couple years ago, they had a mountain of gut kits for these. You might luck out, free is better than paying for a kit. :dunno:

You could also post up in the wanted section of the classifieds and see if someone has one up for grabs.

As to the chance of getting equal quality if you swap it for a newer ratchet? That's an easy one to answer: no chance at all. This was probably the finest ratchet Craftsman ever made. Do not take it to the store and swap it out, you're much better off trying to find a repair kit.

bring it back and if they give u one that breaks again then get another one or tell them u had one for somany years and the replacement wasnt as good and u would like a craftsman profesonal ratchet and see what they say. i took back stuff to kmart and the craftsman home town stores and they wouldnt take a socket back because it was "abused" which it was but not till after it cracked and they wouldnt warrenty it. i took it to the mall store and no questions asked. i had an air ratchet that was less than a yr old and it messed up and they gave me a better one at the mall store because they didnt have the same one in stock.

Please do not warranty it. The Craftsman RHFT are fine ratchets and much better than anything Sears sells today. Get a rebuild kit and don't use a cheater with the ratchet again ;)

WHEN WERE THESE DISCONTINUED?

!@#! Seeing as I'm still pretty new here, I don't even know if this board allows the kind of language it takes to correctly articulate the magnitude of my hatred for Kmart. Sears and Craftsman have been downhill ever since then. More and more (soon to be all, no doubt) craftsman tools every day have a "china" sticker on them. I F#@$%^g hate kmart.

That was a damned fine ratchet that any old average joe could buy from any old sears, and it was a deal for it's price.

I would Get a repair kit from cripe or napa.

If you trade it into sears, they'll try to give you a Chinese made RP, however, of you make them look up the equivalent ratchet, I think you're supposed to get a Taiwan made thin profile as equivalent.

Armstrong still makes that ratchet. The gear kit is the same.

Well I got the ratchet fixed. Special thanks to jrodc455 for helping me by locating and sending me the kit for it. Also, I got the whole story on how my dad came to own this ratchet and it is pretty cool. While in college, my dad worked as an electrical contractor and took the foreman position on a job as a favor to the management. It turned out that there was some kind of wage freeze and they could not pay him more, but were allowed to give him tools. So he went to Sears and picked out some tools, this being one of them. This was probably the early 70's, before I was born. So thanks again to jrodc455 for his part in restoring a family heirloom.
