Iv'e seen something similar in 3/8 drive, but that would be a distributor wrench connector. Not sure if any such animal was ever made in 1/4" drive.

Yea I was thinking the same thing. It wouldn't have the spot for his detent ball though.

1/4" square drive on both ends? They do make square pipe plug sockets you know.
If your in a bind and need a job done NOW, take two stubby 1/4" extensions, and weld them together to make one. This is why you need to keep some junk chinese tools lying around, for fabrication purposes.

That could work, I'm looking for something with a retainer hole for a detent ball though.
I think I've found snap on makes a bit socket with replaceable bits via set screw that may be right.

This company makes them in 1/2 drive, I guess you could use one and then use adapters to get it down to 1/4 on both ends.

In my glovebox, I keep this little kit I made up.
Sockets and bits fit into the handle of the driver. 8,10,12mm. Flat and Phillips bits.
Not pictured, a ratchet that I also keep in the bag.
I could use the tm4 1/4" piece as an extension if I had an equally opposite female adapter to use on the ratchet.
I know it sounds complicated, but I just wouldn't feel right if it was easy. Lol

I don't know if they make a 1/4" version but several of my 3/8" distributor wrenches have a 3/8" drive piece like you are talking about. Maybe they make a 1/4" distributor wrench for smaller engine applications?
Edit: I found this and it looks like you could just drill your own detent hole and it would work fine.

Take 2 1/4" drive hex sockets with removable bits of common size. Remove one bit then insert the end of the other bit in the empty socket and lock down with the set screw. Double 1/4" female adapter...with detents.

Gearwrench has the same piece, I had gotten a couple. The other thing you could use is a plain 1/4 drive extension, it does work.

Thanks, all. I feel this question has been well answered. I will be looking at Fastenal, at a Mastercraft or Gearwrench adapter.
And yes, I have had a need for it. I know I could just put an extension in the "kit" but I like the compact idea of the adapter.

Not sure about inexpensive, but - Snap-on TQN139. It is a 1/4" F x 1/4" F torque tester adapter. It's likely that Precision Instruments and CDI make one as well and that the Snap-on version is one of those two.
The least expensive option is likely to be a 1/4" drive 8 point 1/4" socket, but it won't have any retention on the 8pt end.

if I needed one, I would cut off the business ends of 2 sockets and weld the 1/4" square ends together

I'd consider doing that, and then I'd remember the failures I've had welding to sockets in the past and end that thought chain. Sockets are made from a high carbon steel that ends up very brittle after welding if you don't have an oven to heat treat it.
Plus there's the issue with removing the chrome, and the possibility of manganese in the alloy.

Ok, so I've got several old duro ratchets and couple have lost their drive plugs over the course of their lives. I didn't really want to pay eBay asking prices for them so I decided to try and make one using 1/2" key stock and adjustable ball plungers. They seem to work pretty good, not sure how...

Could you take a 1/4” hex bit socket and slide a matching socket in the other end? If you got a 6 mm hex bit socket 1/4 drive and then put a 6 mm 1/4 drive socket on the end now you got something you can use

Usually for stuff like this it is for a special application and one can jam in tape etc to make things retain well enough for a limited time. Similar can be done with square (female) type sockets. If you had the need now and then and wanted to be a bit more fancy, you could carefully grind some detents with a Dremel type tool.

The Gearwrench adaptor works really well because the sleeves work as stabilizers. It's out of stock on Amazon but that's not uncommon since they are inexpensive and move quick. The last one I got was like $3. The sleeves could easily be cut off to suit a need.

I have one of these. The square drive portion is recessed almost 1/2" on each end, presumably to support the extensions. They come with Gearwrench ratcheting screwdriver sets to provide a long drive extension.
You'd need a couple of short extensions; you couldn't connect, say, two ratchets.

Some early 1/4" drive socket sets contained a 4-point (square) 1/4" socket. Not sure if that's going to suit your purposes.

I've got one of those in my gear wrench driver set. I cut one side shorter so it fits a ratchet or impact driver. Works great for light use.
