First post, been a long time lurker. Finally got my permit to build a shop to house my Oldsmobile/parts collection. Size will be 40 x 30, pole construction. Limited on size and height, would have went bigger but didnt want to apply for a variance. Im questioning my choice in door size. Right now they are 10 x 8 with a 3 foot service in between. I like the look of it but I dont want them to be useless. Should I go with a 12 x 8 and move the service door to the outside of the doors?

I am building a pole barn simular to the one you plan on building. Mine is all steel. Doors are 12x10. I installed them last night. Now just the cement.

I would think that having the doors like you do will give you better access to the back corners of the building.

Are you limiting the height because of permit restrictions ? Putting in a lift at a later date will possibly be difficult. Here is how I did my 30x40x12 using 10x10 doors. I wanted an "office" type area on one end to display my gas & oil & racing memorabilia collection and to have a place for my computer, etc. You can read all about it here.. http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=188161

If I go higher than 12 foot at the center of the truss Id have to file for a variance. Anything bigger than my house the same. The twp inspector told me Id never get my original plan passed. I live in a residential area but I have a large lot. I guess they dont want buildings that take up the entire lot.

I really dont need a lift, all Ive ever known is working on my back. And I dont want to tie up floor space by installing one.

Believe me, when you get a couple of more years on you, you'll really wish you had a lift

Nice that you can build this with no zoning problem. How hard to apply for a variance?

You asked about OH door size and personnel door placement. If I had the option on door sizes, I would go with a 12'w x 8'h. Then put the personnel door off to one side.

This side of the building is pretty much used up with doors and to put the personnel door between the OH doors really screws things up. That wall space is now useless. If you wanted to put a hose reel on the wall there to share bays you're screwed. Same for other shared bay equipment. Something to think about.

I have a thread here with my current pole barn build. I thought about 10' doors because the poles are set every 10'. Take a look at what we did. It's no problem for the 12' doors. The header just has to be doubled up.

Here's my build: http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=195854

Think about the swing of the personnel door. RH or LH and what will it open against. I did this with my build to minimize wasted wall.

i like the garage but i want to see the rocket parts

One done and one to go. Primer car is now torn down, and scattered all over my house, my shed and attached garage. Cant go any further until the pole building is up. No room to assemble anything.

200 bucks, and fill out the app on why I need what I want. They announce the request in the local paper, notify everyone within 300 feet, and have a vote after you make your case. My original plan was 40x35 with an attic. I was told it wouldnt pass the board. So I scaled it down to meet their requirements.

There are bigger builds around me, but are older and things have changed as the area builds out.

After I finish my current build Im not restoring any more cars. The shop will be used as storage for vehicles.

I like that style OLDS 442. Years ago I had a nice '67, bigger than yours. Sold it to a guy up north.

Apply for the variance. It'll be the best $200 you ever spent. Propose BIG. Settle for mid-size. Use comparables. Common outcome on these things is a low-profile request, nobody objects and you get what you want.

Shop size? It's always inversely proportional to what you can afford to put in it. Trust me, I know.

I can always add onto the back of my existing because its attached. I can make it as big as I need and they cant say no, weird but thats what he told me. Right now, this size wont kill me money wise and gives me what I need.

The spot where the building is going..

DSC_0361_zps59410659.jpg

A crew of four guys dropped all the poles in yesterday. Apparently they dug out all the holes by hand with post hole diggers.

Post hole diggers? Did they negotiate their price by the hour?

It was hotter than hell too, high 80s. I didnt hire Amish but they sure worked like Amish. Took one day and 3 guys to frame it out, dig holes and lay poles.

Cement work starts on Tuesday. He wants to get the pad down before framing it and hanging trusses.

I talked to the construction guy and he told me they used an auger to do the holes. He laughed when I asked, they used the hole diggers to clean out the holes.

Dug by hand? Damn! How deep?

Wow such small holes!:shocking:
Ours were 24" round and 56" deep for a 30x40 shed.
Glad to see they removed the sod before pouring concrete, I'm amazed that some people still pour stone over top soil and then pour concrete.

Wish I had a few of those cars in my shed!

Every neighborhood has that "ONE BUSYBODY" pain in the *** neighbor that complains. Truth be know, it's probably some ******* 3 blocks away that doesn't have anything better to do than drive around being a pain in someones ***.

Shingles are on, door openings framed out, and down braces for the girts are on. Pour is scheduled for Monday weather permitting.

1. Hosting your pictures on imageshack instead of tripping into the photobucket revenue machine would benefit both you and viewers who actually want to see the pictures you post.

2. Did you ever run that red 442 without wipers and with blackwalls when it was first completed?

All pictures are gone due to the PhotoBucket bandwidth monster (ie bait and switch). Free is only free if it actually works.

Much better solution to add a USB harddrive to your computer for storing all your photos. Then just push them directly onto GJ using the Manage Attachments after you Edit the post and Go Advanced.

Crew started on the siding this morning. They did the backside and half of the sides before calling it a day.

Project stalled out due to materials not being ordered by supply house. When the siding was delivered the soffits and some siding were missing. Some trim was also cut wrong. Supposed to be here by the end of next week.

Wow, don't know how any neighbor would have gall to complain about your shop. It turned out great !! With the surrounding trees, green grass, and quality of build, that is nice looking.

What really makes the shop is the overhang and shingled roof. Really takes away that "pole barn" look and more of normal shop.

Curious where this is located. Now would be good time to Update GJ Profile with State / City.

Thanks for sharing and keeps pics coming as interior is finished.
