I tossed out the architect's lighting plan and am trying one on my own from the stickies that are in this forum (which are quite awesome - thanks for the info share).

I will see if I can clean the drawings up a bit.

Walls:
t1-11 around the bottom (natural or painted undecided)
The rest is painted drywall.

Ceilings:
The left 3 bays are 17 foot ceiling.
The storage loft and shop area are 9 foot ceilings.
The loft is Wood/Decking
The shop area will be drywall in white.

The construction lines on the drawing above were my attempt to show the loft and the overhead doors. The 3 bay doors are 10' X 9' and the shop area rear exit overhead door is 8' or 9' (undecided)

Ok Here is an Updated Lighting Plan.
I'll continue to work on it over the next few nights to refine it.

I revised it from the last one. Basically took two of Platonic Solids' designs and combined them. (Thanks Plato)

I'll build a circuit group diagram tomorrow to show which lights are on which circuits. (I like the ability to turn on control "banks" of lights at a time" for visibility and for task lighting)

The best way for me to tell you if this works, or to make a recommendation, is to model it in Dialux. I'm not going to spend time redrawing your floor plan. If you can provide a CAD file, preferably DWG or DXF, I'll give it a shot.

Plato I tried to PM you but your account settings do not allow it.
If you tweak my drawings send me your paypal info in a PM.
I'll buy you a case of virtual beer.

This is the best I can do with using the James 2-lamp strip light fixture. Had to double them up on the 17' ceiling to get the required output.

I can see I am still eating dirt here. It doesn't need to all be in the top of the ceiling, every time you drop a fixture down it makes more light. Light at floor is different than light at bench height. Dropping a fixture 3 ft in a 15 ft ceiling doesn't make a great difference with meter at the floor but move it up to a 36 inch bench and its a lot brighter.
I have a couple cfl, 13 watts hanging from a cord in the ceiling and can pass thru to local light to some extent.

sberry - You are correct. However, as this is a new construction, I assume the OP wants full use of the space that he's paid for. My layout is just a suggestion based on his original plan. The top isoplot image shows fc at 30" workplane.

Yours look super. I was tossing in that night lites are a thing of beauty here. I have work lights in my office, a couple 4 ft fixtures but we also burn a small cfl around the clock and don't even have general office switch we use. A guy can walk in, walk thru, walk to bathroom put wood in the stove without any switching.
I run 3 or 4 outside also, can walk between buildings without turning on or off. Got a couple on timers and one on photo cell. have 2 motions for entering garages, that works super too. I sent an extra wire up pipes in some cases, made it all super easy to switch without a bunch of additional work.

Plato thank you kindly! I do have one question. Looking into the garage with your back to the three overhead doors there is a bump out on the left. That bump out has a 9 foot ceiling. Knowing that should I just add 3 more lights into the bump out at the 9 foot height?

Oh - I modeled that area as 17ft. Please stand by.

Previous layout images updated accordingly. Be sure to refresh your browser if you don't see it.

Some context to the lighting decision. Also a pic of the fixtures that were ordered.
