Started this project for a fireman a few weeks back...waiting on parts now. I love to cut out rust and make an old beater useful again!

I didn't think it was possible, but that looks even worse than my '58 when I started on it! Good luck with it, that's a project! If you can find the time, I, for one, would appreciate some "in-progress" and "finished" pictures. It would bring back a lot of memories...

There will probably be some holes in the radiator support, too - leaves and dirt get caught down in there where you can't see it until you pull the front clip apart.

My '66 is the same color, Marlin Blue.

What are the rear wheels you're running, I've got a 60 f100 to start to work on in the spring and love the wide rear wheels...

Whew! Some of that cancer is truly brutal! Can you even buy any premade repair panels for this era Ford?

Lots of panels for ALL era trucks - it's BIG business nowaday - fools like me taking on rusty projects!!:bounce:

I patched those last week for a friend - definitely NOT scrap panels! Actually, I've been using the original hood that I removed from the Challenger for patches!

Absolutely correct - the owner has sources a good F. end already.
Thanks for these pics - the owner will love them.

Thanks for these pics - the owner will love them.

I have some other photos if you need any details for reference, although they were on film so I'll have to scan them.

How's the seat upholstery? In one photo you can see a corner of the original seat upholstery and it looks to be in good condition, but since there's one of those saddle blanket covers over the top I assume there are worn or torn areas. You can get repro rubber floor mats, but they only come in black - the original in that truck would have been blue. They also have carpet sets available.

When I did my truck I bought a lot of stuff from Auto Krafters and from Dennis Carpenter, they both have pretty good catalogs. There are also (or least there used to be) a couple places in the Kansas City area that have a lot of used parts for these trucks. I haven't spent much time there, but there is also a forum for 1961-1966 Ford trucks: http://fordtruk.com/forums/

Stuart - I'd love to see any photo's you have. Always helps to see it done!

It needs new seat coverings - not sure if he's going to recover or just go with new store-covers. If he goes with the latter, I'll install them for him and hog-ring them properly. We ordered the rubber floor mat as the original came out in pieces. Someone had (literally) glued and screwed blue **** carpeting to the floors and kick panels - to hide the tin floor pans and rust - which made matters worse...

I also bought everything from Dennis Carpenter - the first order came within days - hopefully the second does as well! I have a thread going at FTE.com, here:

I recently picked up an abandoned project. It will need all of the same stuff you are doing. I haven't decided what to do with it. It is a 352 with a 3 on the tree.

Keep the pics coming. Maybe they'll motivate me, because these are cool old trucks.

When I restored my old 69 Carpenter was the only one around and i was always pleased with what I bought off of them . I also have been buying parts and pieces for side jobs off of LMC which has been very good quality

Tell you the truth, I`d never considered this vintage truck - maybe didn`t see many. But they sure grow on you (except for the poor metal-engineering!). Cletus - love the step side box and 352 - makes yours very special IMHO. Can we see some pics of the insides and problem areas?

It's certainly not my fave repair, but I do like getting rid of it, shaping new metal and making a vehicle whole again. Rusty panels - esp.something like the mounts above - all crumbling and nasty, look so bad at first, but then you cut them out and it looks better right away. Once shiny new metal is in, it looks great.
Plus not too many guys have these skills, so it's nice to be able to show them what can be done with time and tools! I did those 55 Chev fenders for a friend and although he paid me $750, I still saved him $500 over new fenders. The money I've made working a couple hours a day has been so much it (almost) makes me want to do it full time...except I don't want to do it full time!

e-tek,
What kind of tools besides a welder is required to fix those rust problems? Don't recall seeing what you got in the shop...

It is buried in the snow right now. I'll try to get some pics soon, but I noticed that it needs cab mounts, floor work, fender work, etc.......

It also has a wooden bed, so Ellen can try out her woodworking skills if we decide to tackle it. I'm not committing to anything yet. I'm just putting it on the "to do" list. :lol_hitti

Wow. I like those wheels. Old style but nice n' fat.

They are from Rally America. 15x10 in rear with custom backspacing. Fronts are 16x6,but might end up having to get 17`s because the 16`s wouldn`t clear the brake calipers without spacers.

I installed the entire front suspension/steering/brakes out of a 2004 Crown Victoria. Handles great!

I have pretty much everything I need now - But for rust work, one basically just needs a drill for spot welds, air hammer to separate pinch-welds, die-grinder for cutting, some shaping tools (I do a lot with a hammer and anvil - but I just bought a metal brake), the welder of course, some body hammers and dollies and then filler materials and sanders....

Here's the tailgate I started on today:

Walker66FordDec22012.jpg

Someone jammed bondo in a rust hole - SURPRISE!!

Walker66FordDec22013.jpg

Walker66FordDec22018.jpg

The body mounts came in, so I threw some paint on the inners -this time they won't rust very fast!

I guess the replacement 65-66 cab mounts are actually built pretty good. The 61-64 ones that they sell look like something made in a highschool metals class. I had to modify the **** outta them to get them to fit.

Who made yours? I am TOTALLY impressed by these from Dennis Carpenter Ford. Gotta be 14g metal - heavier than the original stuff for sure. Now I hope the floors are as good!

I am glad there are people like you in the world.
I love to see the end results, but I would never tackle a rusted out project.

“Twin I Beam” what a blast from the past that is.

Twin I beams aren't that old. I think the last ones used were in 97 on the last of the old body style ford trucks. Last of the kingpins was 91 on the f-350 d60s.

Man I always wanted to hot tank a whole truck body to remove the rust. Drop it in like an above ground pool. Would be so much easier. electrolytic rust removal Then all you have to do is spray it off, weld in new metal, and paint.

Love the Flatty Red! I have a 46 Merc F100 that is awaiting a new block. One day I'll do the body, but no rush - it seems to draw more attention in it's original "Patina"!

Apparently the parts (floors, centre supports, rockers) are in, so next week will see a lot get done!

E-tek,
Have you tried the 3M weld thru coating? It's for areas that you can't get to with paint after a panel is welded in. You can use it on both pieces and weld right thru it, works real good. The heat changes the properties into a very corrosion resitant coating. Not sure what, ain't no chemist but it does work well. It isn't cheap, comes in a spray can and can be had at your local auto paint supply house. Looks like you have your hands full with rust. My youngest son just changed cabs on his 67 due to rust. Living in the South we were able to find an almost perfect cab with just a small back corner area on each side needing replacement. Good luck with the project.
