'06 Charger Shifter Locked

My son's '06 Charger will not release the shifter out of Park. When you hit the brake you can hear the solenoid in the shifter click but it does not release the lock allowing the shifter to move into drive. His research says that there is a plastic part in there that breaks. It has the Hemi motor is that makes a difference.

So to the brain trust here; Is there an easy way to get this shifter to move so that we can get it into the shop for repairs? Or are we going to have to remove the console and fix it out in the weather?

Manually shift the linkage at trans?

Is there a hole/covered hole on shifter plate? You can slip a flathead in there and shift through all the gears.

I can't speak for the Charger.

But I found 2002 GM pickups amazingly easy to put into neutral from underneath.

Usually there is a shifter lock override that is accessible from inside the car. Usually under a trim panel or something.

Yep, classic Pink Thingy failure. I pre-emptively replaced the one on my Magnum with a Dorman unit just in case. You can remove the console trim around the shifter and manually actuate the thingy until you get it fixed.

I fixed that with a cotter pin. Easy once you get in there. Good luck.

Your vehicle owners manual tells you how to disengage the shifter lock.

On our '07 Jeep there is a slot near the shifter that you push a screwdriver into.... just as discussed in the long winded You Tube video above.

Also good to know when your battery dies and you need to move the car.

Sadly, the shift interlock described in the manual that can be accessed via the console slot is not the one that typically fails on LX-platform cars. The reasonably accessible one is the Park interlock, and indeed can be handy in some situations where you need to release the parking pawl. However, the item that has failed on the OP's vehicle is not the Park interlock, but the secondary interlock that allows you to shift into a drive gear once the Park interlock has been disengaged.
