I am sure this has been debated a hundred times. I am a stubborn axle nut on my Honda Prelude. My old MAC AW234 is tired. I need something TODAY that will get it done. I do not want cordless. I have the compressor. Something stronger than the mac was when it was new and no more than 150 please.

Thanks guys.

I havnt looked at 1/2 air guns in a while am not familiar with all the models but I think a guy would have to go a bit over the 200$ mark to get near the best they make ordering from a competitive vendor. A lot of auto parts stores are CP and IR vendors.

Amazingly my Matco MT1769A is stronger than my Snappy 1/2" breaker bar... at least a nut that I ran on full blast with the Matco (an axle nut) I could not remove with breaker bar, or at least I stopped when the flex stopped being merely alarming and started to look possibly life threatening. I (heart) my impact so much.

For a <$200 budget though I probably would get a good name brand 3/4" breaker bar and a 3/4" to 1/2" adapter.

I should have bought another new one long before I did. It sounds like there is legit testimony though for a gun under a hundred, that is a plus too. I got one of the heavy CP models, 727 or 747, got a 4 speed and I like it.

I used an old hand me down IR for years till it finally just became so worn it was frustrating. Same with a CP ratchet I had early on, just used them a lot.
I am all for economical but if you got worn old whimpy 1/2 air gun it needs replacement, usually money well spent. Its the kind of tool I like to buy brand new.
Same for 3/8 air ratchets, don't want someone elses worn out piece needing a rebuild that cost more than a guy can replace brand name for.

Stronger than a new Mac, and less than 150? Your parameters need some adjusting.

So I guess you're after bang for your buck. Look into Aircat.

Harbor Freight Earthquake. Better than the 2135timax BY FAR. Turn the pressure up to 120+ psi and stand back.

Roughly $75 after 20% coupon.

You're using 3/8" hose right?

Agreed, this is what you are looking for... Good chance you could even get it off with the HF Earthquake 3/8" gun too, but I'd still go 1/2".

IR2135. It IS bad ***. Bite the bullet and buy a tool for life.

I know the topic has been beaten to death over and over and over, but I'm not sure that horse is dead yet! :)

If I live to be 1,000 I'll never understand someone asking where to get the cheapest ___? The tools you select should not be about the price... If you are making your buying decisions concerned about the price, you are off in the wrong direction.

Tools are something you're going to have the rest of your life; buy once, buy top quality and buy a name brand that you're going to be able to get parts for in 20-years should you need them.

And if you didn't know the tools that you get from the home centers and discounters are not the same quality-wise as the ones that you get from a professional trade supplier.

I've said this before, and probably sound like a broken record by now, but it bears repeating here... the best advice I can impart on you is to keep this in mind... I have never once said to myself; "Damn, I wish I would have bought the cheaper one." But, I have said; "Damn, I have wasted money buying that cheap POS".

The only thing in your price requirements would be either a helluva deal on a used one, or a HF Earthquake. It's ugly, it's got the ergonomics of a brick, and weighs about the same, but it will get the job done, has decent strength, and it's cheap.

I think some of you need to eat your Wheaties if you are not stronger then an a 1/2 air impact with a breaker bar, or look at at how you use the breaker bar.

I have never once said to myself; "Damn, I wish I would have bought the cheaper one." But, I have said; "Damn, I have wasted money buying that cheap POS".

That's a pretty short sighted statement. Without knowing the details of the situation, it is impossible to say.

I have never said, "Damn, I have wasted money buying that cheap POS." I have on occassion bought a cheap POS, but I went into it with the expectation it might not last, and was prepared for that outcome. (If I'm out $30, big whoop...)

I have said, "I wish I'd spent a little more carefully, there's a tool to do this at 20% of the price I paid."

I have had good luck exercising careful judgement on tool purchases. I have some HF tools in my box, and they fit in the same drawer with the SO. Some of them I would not have the cheap tool again, others I would not have anything else.

Whether or not the cheapies are worth the gamble depends on the price and the odds.

If I buy a $75 impact wrench instead of a $450 impact wrench, and it works, I have saved $375
If I buy a $75 impact wrench and it doesn't work, I am out $75.
Now weigh the risk against the reward. Further consider that the $75 tool has some salvage value, in that it may be resold to someone else, or may find another use, for example, at the garage at home instead of work.

There are certainly times to buy the unquestioned best, but to assume that is appropriate for all people, in all circumstances, is very assumptive.

Nice specs, but from the pics it looks like the balance on it will be *** end heavy...

Absolutely not! The main reason I bought one was becauce I have never picked up a gun with such good balance. This gun is truly an extension of your arm.

I use a nitrocat 1200k for stuck bolts
If that doesn't work, out comes the 34" 3/4 drive ratchet
The day to day gun is a Hf earthquake 1/2", it's admirable, plenty of power but not unstoppable

The problem I see now is that part of the axle nut is smashed into the groove of the shaft. Where you are supposed to bend it into. The nut can't spin past it. The thing is, it doesn't look like much of it is in the way either.

I am using 1/4" hose from my craftsman tank. I guess I need to go get some 3/8" line then huh?

That is outstanding, and a good example that a visual assessment is no substitute for actually holding a tool in your hand. I shall have to look at one of these if/when I have to replace a 1/2" impact wrench.

+1 on the IR231c. I picked mine up dirt cheap and it has never failed to do what I needed it to do. These were the standard for many years until all the light weight composite models came out.

So it's a staked nut? You are gonna have to unstake it or it's not gonna come off so easy and if it does you need an axle now.

Yeah buying a 25 foot flexzilla 3/8 hose will help matters. Hi flo fittings help some too.
