1-3/16" = 30 mm, good for front wheel drive axles.

1.188" * 25.4 mm/in = 30.16 mm

Mike just beat me to it.

My set of SK combination wrenches skips that size. My obsession wanted to fill the void until I saw the price. I doubt I would ever use it.

Ive had one in a proto set for about 8 years now. I've only ever used it on metric bolts and not since I got my SK metric impact set! I could probably stop carrying it!

I first read the interchangeability with 30mm in shop manual for VW Rabbit front wheel bolts. Rabbits for Dummies, I think it was, chuckle. While 30mm is very common on metric machines, I have never run across 1 3/16" on either the imperial or the Whitworth machinery.

Going from memory, 1 1/8 is a standard size for a 3/4 bolt. 1 1/16 and 1 1/4 are standards too, for heavy bolts, but I don’t think 1 3/16 features. Maybe on the old National (pre unified) or USS standards? Maybe some pipe fittings. Certainly some “specials”.

If I had one I wouldn’t ditch it, but I probably wouldn’t rush out and buy one either.

I have wrenches from 1/4 to 1 1/4 to hand, but skipping 1 inch and 1 3/16. I can’t ever remember needing these sizes.

If I needed to use something on a 30mm I’d use a 30mm wrench. That is a common size.

1" shows up the odd time. 1 1/4" head size is the head size of 3/4" structural iron bolts, so I've seen them in industrial plants . Most often I've hooked it on a 1 1/8" to get more leverage.

Buddy of mine took an extra I had to use on his Ammo reloader.
Past that I used them on steering box mounting bolts and pitman arm pinch bolts on Volvo trucks(actually 30mm).

John Deere loved 1 3/16" to hold their tractors together. After switching to metric, now covered in 30 mm bolt heads.

I have a bunch of bike tools, mostly freewheel removers, that have 1" hex heads on them. Pretty sure I used to use it when I worked on my dad's Ford 8n, too.

You obviously never had a Volvo with a cast iron (red) block engine from the 60s to the 90s - they all had a UNC 3/4" oil drain plug that took a 1" wrench.

Just read this through and I will summarize to save anyone who just wants the Cliff Notes.........1 3/16 can substitute for a 30mm. if you are not going to remove an axle nut or work on a John Deer than you will likely never have a need to use it.

I picked up a 1-1/8 four way angle wrench that was enlarged to this size. I figured it was used on heavy equipment.

Wait until you pull the lugs off an early 80's dodge neon that lost it's chrome lug nut covers - that takes an 18.5 MM socket - 18 won't fit, 19 (which is what fits ith the covers) will strip the edges of the bolt. i went through absolute **** finding someone who could order one for me - when I asked, they said "Oh, you own a Dodge neon"...

Pieces of literal s#!+...

The AC disconnect lines under the cab for John Deere Soundguard cabs also use 1 3/16" wrench.

The Embraer 145 uses a 1-3/16" socket/service wrench for the fuel pump cannon plug receptacles.

Make sense Cat would. I have noticed they like odd sizes. My 16mm wrenches get a work out on Cats. Now that you say it, I d remember 30 mm on Cats.

I wonder if it comes from Cat’s earlier metric machines coming from Japan. I know 13, 16, 18, 15/16, 30 and 1 7/16 are the most common bolt sizes I deal with daily. It’s a little annoying because cheaper tools tend to leave out 16 and 18s in the sets so I always have to check before buying.

It’s also a pain when hardware has been replaced with aftermarket and you have to go fetch the rarely used 17mm socket to get that one bolt out

I feel like 17mm is one I use a lot, the collets on our palm routers and the bolt on the abrasive chop saw are the two that immediately come to mind. I keep a 17x19 DOE handy, seems needed often.

older core drills for concrete. Have a couple with the open end snapped from trying to get stuck bits off the drill.
