The sk is a nicer socket set then the kd. But the K-D has the nicer ratchet. Not a real fan of the sk round head ratchet.
Ouch! The SK 1/4 round head is one of my favorites.

I don't understand how an SK ratchet is a shortcoming? SK ratchets have a very long time proven bulletproof design and while they don't have 60 teeth they feel very smooth. As far as better value, I see more value in knowing that I contributed towards keeping a US company, with US workers in a US town alive. I hope the OP sees value in that.
I have not owned any SK ratchets because of my experiences with an SK 1/4" ratchet owned by the boss at the bodyshop I got my start in the trade at. He put several kits in it and got one replacement ratchet during the time I worked there. That thing was always busted. On the upside, I was very impressed by the quality of the sockets and extensions in that set.
I also do not like round head ratchets, ratchets with less than 60 teeth, or short handles. Those gripes are all personal preference though. The truth is I might be giving the SK ratchet a slightly unfair bad review, but my experiences with them and my personal preferences have lead me to not like them.
That said I'm glad you like yours and mean no disrespect to SK or people that like them. If the OP wants to go with an SK ratchet, he should. Personal preference plays a huge role in tool selection.
I agree that while the SK set is very nice, the ratchet ***** ***.
Are you sure, the 40970 is a 36t ratchet, not 60t. Because I thought that was strange. I had to google it to double check.
Am keeping the vintage Blackhawk tools I inherited from my father and some other basic hand tools but replacing sockets, ratchets and wrenches
here:Ok, my OCD is kicking in again...
I am 100% confident that my SK Wayne 40970 ratchet is 60t.
I had a conversation with someone here regarding their SK diamond 40970 ratchet, who also said it was 60t.
HOWEVER, I do recall other people "saying" that it is 36t, but never confirmed they had tried to count it.
I'm wondering if there are any generational differences between the SK 40970s.
Below is a copy/paste of a PM I had a long time ago...

Alright, its the SK logo inside a diamond.

I also have a 60 tooth 40970, a SK Wayne variant. However, others have said that their 40970s have 36 teeth. So I was wonderin if there were any generation differences.

A bit tough to count these little round head, but I counted 60 teeth on this one. Have to check the logo
I googled it at 3 different tool site both the 40970 and 40970-2 are 36t. That was the other reason I did not care for the sk ratchet. It was short, and in tight spaces it had to much swing angle to grab the next teeth. It is super simple to find out for yourself. Just count the click it takes to do a complete circle.
.
That is strange, unless SK change something and not told anyone. I would expect them to post at least fine tooth or the actually teeth count on their website. But all it said is smooth action like all the other ratchets out there.
I do agree with the ratchet having an extra short handle. Perhaps that's why I like it. I use the 40970 like a palm ratchet. The head of the ratchet is in my palm, with the handle between my thumb and index finger. I couldn't hold a pear shaped QR ratchet one like that, because I would accidentally hit the reverse lever, and I would constantly hit the QR button.

Thanks everyone for the help.
Although this set is slightly used (but complete) and almost twice what I wanted to spend I decided to purchase this from a friend on another forum for $250 shipped. At that price I couldn't say no . Will be my first Snap-On tool purchase

Dude you really hate SK don't you. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the SK ratchet. They have been turning nuts and bolts since the 30's and are still going strong. That is a much nicer set. And allot better ratchet.

No reason to bash the SK ratchet so much.
Plus, some of the negative assertions in this thread are incorrect.

I doubt there is a person on this forum that would argue the round head S-K is better than a T72
those are the worst ever they are the most reversing ratchet of all time
the SO set he bought is over $100 more, and wasn't a given option new it would be over $500
coming from someone who said to buy cman sockets, and an armstrong ratchet to save a couple dollars over the S-K set
