There's SO MANY good and inexpensive ratchets these days. This thread could quickly spiral out of control. To help you get out while you still can, yes the Capri makes good ones. If you found what you like, I'd stop there.
Husky? Perfectly acceptable. There's even some models I would call "very good". And they're cheap and offer a lifetime exchange warranty. I think this is the modern equivalent of Craftsman, but I might get flamed for that.
Gearwrench and Tekton are the next most likely candidates. Lots of people working with these in shops everyday in shops are perfectly happy. Capri is probably in this company - though I expect some may argue that certain models punch in an even higher weight class.
Williams USA round heads (e.g. B52a) are where it's at if you want something made in the USA like your son's Craftsman of olde, but also want some modern fine-tooth action. Finishing is a bit less refined than most tools from Taiwan these days, but the ratchet mechanism is butter. The pear heads are good too, but I don't see why you'd buy a 36 tooth ratchet these days intentionally.
Proto premium pear head if you want tool-truck like quality without tool-truck level pricing.
Those are just some of the most common and best loved ratchets. There's a ton of European, Japanese and Taiwanese options to explore.
