1/4inch ratchets...

in my experience, the only 1/4" dr ratchet i'll never buy again is SK.

i have SO, cornwell, mac, gearwrench, duralast, and a roundhead CM copy.

the SK's are the only ones i've ever broken

all i have as for as 1/4 ratchets are the 5inch (top to bottom) cman ones (3 of them). when i put them in my hand there is maybe 3/4 of an inch sticking out and is sometimes a PITA to use bc of its size and that it keeps ripping the gears out of them. its the only cman tool i keep having problems with and no im not using it where i shouldnt be. its just wears out very fast for some reason. so i thought 5+4=9inchs. but seeing everyones pics that maybe a bit to long. i just want something i can get my hand on and still have length sticking out passed my hand.

What do you guys even use 1/4" ratchets for ?

I use 3/8 for most everything unless the fastener is about 3/4 or 7/8 or larger.

If space is a constraint then I use 3/8 stubby

Very rarely do I actually use 1/4" drive and when I do I have some cheap craftsman raised panels for it.

I had to remove the rear lifting hook to get the rear valve cover off. There's no way for a 3/8 drive ratchet to fit in there. I would have preferred to use the 3/8 drive ratchet if I had room.

Pretty much everything up to 13mm- 9/16th

yeah, what ZRX said, i generally use 1/4" drive for anything like 12mm and under.

In all honesty,one of the best 1/4" ratchets I've used is a little Kobalt unit. It's not the length you want,but it has been faultless for me and I've used about every brand available. Just my opinion.

I just bought the little quick release 1/4" ratchet today and it's awesome! Even at full price it's still one heck of a deal!!

Don't know why. I've been using the ones I have on a daily basis for more than a few years now without any issues. To me they're solid performing ratchets that can be had for not a whole lot of money.

I probably use 1/4 drive the most. I mean just look at all of the plastic and smaller fasteners on an upper engine these days and you'll see why.

I don't trust those ratchets. Too many guys on here have gotten dudds. They may work for Fedwrench, but you better believe he's got a Snap-on for a backup.

I've gotten faulty T72s and Matco ratchets as well. Gearwrench is not the only one to ship a lemon every once in awhile.

Crapped out after 3 or 4 weeks, took MONTHS to get it warrantied. Haven't bought any GW tools since that fiasco. Total ***********. They lost me for life.

i rarely have to use 1/4" dr for anything. when i do use one, it's in a very tight spot, 1/4" dr socket and extensions is the only thing that will fit.
