1 hp motor wire size

Name plate says 14.7 amps, not sure what the start up or FLR amps is, do I need to use # 12, or can I use # 14. Distance from outlet (20 amp) to motor will be about 10 feet.

Given the information I would use 12. However I would temper the choice with knowledge of the load the motor sees and if it starts under load.

IDK it's for a bandsaw, do you mean if there is a load applied when it starts?

The $ difference between a 25 foot roll of #12 and #14 is minimal - go with the 12.

Come on. #14 is rated for 15 amps. Running it at 14.7 amps doesn't make sense.

Well, a fellow at another group answered as below, so I had to get to Cardello's before 1:00 PM.
I went with 11 feet of the # 14/3.

Sounds like you're asking about cord, not building wiring. Typical thermoset and thermoplastic cords, like SO and SJO are rated 18A for 14 gauge (two current-carrying conductors, ground doesn't count) and 25A for 12 gauge.

Come on. #14 is rated for 15 amps. Running it at 14.7 amps doesn't make sense.

If it was hardwired & not useing Romex + the motor having overload protection, 14 AWG is allowed to be considered as 20A wire. Cord & plug connected will have to use the normal more restricted rules.
