If I had to pick one I'd say phone.

Normally 2 will fix anything. WD-40 and Duct Tape.

If it moves but ain't supposed to, use the duct tape.

If it's supposed to move but don't, use the WD-40.

All else fails, use the phone.

In the home: A can opener
Garage: side cutter or a good pliers
On your person: A multi tool knife
In the car: Duct tape hands down

A Brain: with an appropriate level of common sense, creativity and, problem-solving capability.

I'd put a Black & Decker Workmate near the top of any homeowner's tool list. Right behind Knife, hammer, pliers and screwdrivers

Plier multitool. From a good brand preferably. Victorinox swisstool or swisstool spirit, Gerber, Leatherman, or SOG.

Not necessarily a tool you can own, but I think fire is pretty important.

I think someone on this site has a sig line that says something to the effect of "There is nothing that cannot be overcome by heat and pressure."

Because some people should not be allowed to handle actual tools!

Can't do much with just one... but if you said 5, I could probably come up with a list of tools that could get me into, or out of, a jam. :D

I'm going to go a bit farther and assume some "tools" which are so basic to every household like a knife, hammer, or screwdriver are already covered. Thinking about a little less "basic" tool I've going to say voltage meter, especially since I'm no electrician.

A spud bar that has the mushroomed head on it. It's an asset for prying, chopping roots with the chiseled end, and tamping dirt in around post.

Made mine out of a crawler crane axle. Love it.

As far as one tool suggestion, O/A torch outfit. Heating, cutting, and welding capabilities all in one self-contained setup.

I think everyone should own one of these sockets:

http://store.snapon.com/Ford-Diesel...sel-Turbo-Ford-3-8-Drive-6-Point-P649844.aspx

Why? Because just look at it! Sure, you're not gonna be swapping many Ford 6.4 turbos, but it's a really nice socket, and it's a 10mm, so it has loads of uses! (You'll have to find uses for it, but whatever..) My dealer thought i'd never use it, but it proved very handy for changing the head gasket on a Mini.

Cordless Impact driver, generally nobody needs or can properly operate a drill for example to drive a screw into a 2x4. Hammer? Why nails if I got screws.

An impact driver can take many bits, spade, drill bits, etc.

One of those lil 12v will do.

I doubt I'll ever have a use for it, but I gotta have one!

An epee. You never know when a duel might break out......

Still have mine (foil actually). When I was a student at UC Santa Cruz in the late '70's, fencing was the only intramural sport - no football, no baseball, or basketball teams.

Instructor was Charles Selberg (RIP) - a member of the three-man foil team that won the only gold medal ever for the US at the World Masters Championship.

I think some of my best memories are the (very) few times I scored a "touch" against the master.

Here he is in his later years:

If you think boxing is tough, try fencing....
