Hello all, Been lurking for a while now and done a ton of research and learned a lot. Its time for me to finish the inside of the shop for heat and organization. It sure does get cold out there in the winter and doesnt make working on anything very fun.

The back story is we purchased the house about a year ago with the shop shell already built and was one of the reasons we liked the house and property. When we started looking we wanted a shop large enough to park the 5th wheel in. Turns out when you have a 40 footer that is rather hard to find. We came close but have decide in a couple years we will add a lean to on the left side where the camper is parked now to put it under. I guess in the long run I didnt really want it taking up so much of the shop anyway so I think its going to work out just fine.

I do all the maintenance on all of out vehicles, bikes and camper myself as im sure most of us do (hence the garages we build) so need a place I can do that year round in comfort. I also build a lot of projects such as cars, trucks, bikes and whatever. I dont believe in paying someone to do something I can do myself so most things are done by me. The shop is 30x40 with a 16' ceiling and small loft running down the right side for storage. The original owners that built it really did a nice job and cared about how things where going together and how it was going to look and function which is nice. We have nice starting point.

The plan at the moment is to finish the electrical for everything I need, insulate, drywall, paint, radiant tube heat, overhead garage door (even though it has barn doors now) storage cabinets, work benches, sound system, 2 post lift and so on. Its probably going to take a while to get it all completed but would at least like to have drywall done and heat in it before to long.

Now for a few pictures. Ill be getting some more soon and updates with the progress. These pictures are from last summer when we bought the property. I have started framing in the walls and ceiling for insulation and drywall last week end so will take new pictures of the progress to date.

I like your barn. Do you have gas plumbed out there? What is your plan for heat? Small wood stove maybe?
A little insulation, some OSB and a small heat source and you'll be good.
Look forward to updates.

Dont have gas there yet but will be trenching it in from the gas meter. I think I am going with an overhead radiant tube heater near ceiling level. They are high enough to keep it up away from everything and I like the idea of everything being warm. I am going to drywall the entire inside.

Update on the progress. Last weekend I had a couple friends come Saturday and Sunday to help frame all the walls and ceilings in for 16" OC and 24" OC for the ceiling. Now all the walls are flush with the posts that make up the structure and will be able to insulate with R-19 in the walls and R-38 blown in the ceiling. Once I have my electrician come finish the wiring I need for garage door, outside power for RV and power for heat all that will have to be done is the gas line for the heater and it will be ready for insulation and drywall.

Today I extended all the outlets and switches out flush with the new framing as they where attached to the outside structure and would have been 3" inside the drywall surface. Luckily the wires where all long enough to be extend out in the new boxes with out having to add on to them. I ran out of material to do any more and dont like making special trips into town to get more. I will be grabbing other items I need this coming week after work and will update as progress continues. I really would like to get the insulation, heat and drywall done before it gets to cold.

Here are a few pictures of what it looks like now.

Made a little progress over the last week so time for an update. I had an electrician come and change the electric panel to a larger 100 amp panel as the one that was in the shop was small and only had a few slots that were all full. Also had him add the power for a garage door opener and the heater that will be mounted to the ceiling.

Next had the plumber come and install the inside gas up the wall and into the ceiling for the heater. It has to be 1 1/4" iron pipe since the buried gas line will be about 300ft. long and the heater is going to be a 100k btu burner. Need to get an inspection on the gas line before insulation and drywall.

Today I framed the attic access hole and 6 boxes for the speakers to keep the insulation out of them since the insulation will be blown in. Also added some drywall backing where needed and a few other small items to get it ready for insulation and drywall. The only thing left to do before insulation is to run all the speaker wires to the stereo location and then Ill be ready to go. Should be insulating this week after work if I get home early enough.

Here are a few pictures.

Made some good progress the last few days. After getting inspections needed I had the insulation installed and the drywall delivered. 80 12' sheets is what we determined it was going to take and with the 16' ceiling we didnt want to do it off ladders so I rented a lift for the weekend. I asked 3 of my buddies to come help hang the rock and to my surprise they agreed. I dont know why but Im always surprised when people will come and help do a job like that. Its not all that fun and I sure do appreciate all the help. Dont think I could have done it by my self. Still have some of it to finish today but wanted to give an update on what was done so far. Its starting to get pretty exciting seeing what its going to be like when its all finished. Anyway here are some pictures as it sits right now. Should be able to finish all the rock and hopefully start the mud and tape this week coming up.

Finished all the drywall today. Ready for taping. Not sure when they will be available to start. I hope it's not to long.

Just out of curiosity, anyone know why I don't get many comments on my build? Seems lots on people look but not much activity. Just wondering.

I love it, but I have held off commenting too much because most of what you are doing is WELL beyond my abilities. :) Just looking at all that sheet rock made my back ache.

Maybe it's envy, because I will never have a garage/building like that. Regardless, you have a masterpiece in the making. Please keep the updates coming.

Thanks slik. I do have some experience with this type of work. Was a Framer for 13 years and now have been a production manager for residential construction for 8. I don't do much manual labor now so that part kicks my **** a little. Not to mention I am 40 now so it takes a little longer to recover. I enjoy it

You've got awesome toys, and a beautiful house, shop, and grounds. Congrats!

As a matter of fact I've saved the first pic of your shop to my "wallpaper pic" file. I like to switch around the wallpaper on my computer from time to time, and in the the middle of winter with 2 feet of snow and -30°C I find it very therapeutic to look at a manicured green lawn and bright sunshine. Are you on 5 acres? I'm on 2.2 but our lot is long and narrow so my neighbour is waaaay too close. Your lot is what I always envisaged. Well done!

Thanks for the comment.. We are on 5 acres and keeps the neighbors far enough away. Previous owner did a great job building the property and making it nice. Now it's just up to us to keep it that way and just add our personal touches.

Not sure why. I love the place. Good design, good color and space. Maybe because its not a ground up. Should not matter to anyone. Its a fansastic garage and better than most, including mine. Lol.

Thanks lowpro. Speaking of color. Does anyone think the interior color should compliment the exterior. I really want to go white for most of it and bright red for the bottom 5' with a black strip splitting. My concern is will it look bad with the outside. Nothing at the property is white. It's either tan or off white. Thoughts?

On the color front, I have one of 4 walls done w a very light gray. Hindsight, I'd either go white or a little darker on the grey ... My white windows/trim don't pop w light gray.

I'd go white for bright unless you'll be doing a lot of dirty work. Welding, grinding in a white environment is a little harsh...lol. Doors will probably be closed most of the time anyhow. If the homeowners association show up with napkins under their glasses and a color wheel, just close the door...

Good question. The inside of my attached garage is tin done by the previous owner. I guess it's not a look I care for to much. The ribs bug me and your kind of stuck with the color you choose. I like flat walls and the ability to change my mind on colors and such. Guess I didn't give it much thought.

Good points. Mine the exterior is tin, so I'm not giving the interior much thought either and just going with white tin. Plan to cover the walls with good signage eventually anyway. ;) Keep up the nice work!

OMG ... No vapor barrier...... it will all have to be redone !!!!!!

Are you being serious or sarcastic. I havent kept up with the threads about this topic. Here in Colorado we dont do vapor barriers on houses so I thought it wouldnt be needed on the shop. Do you have insite I should know about?

Great space that most on here would die for! The only comment I have is do you have enough light? Without windows, you need as much light as you can get, and I didn't see many overhead lights, especially as you get older. Nothing is more frustrating than to be working on something and not be able to see, you just can't have too much light. Painting the walls light in color helps reflect what light you do have. You will be surprised how much brighter it seems once you paint in a white or off-white.

Also, here in the east, it is mandatory to have a vapor barrier on the heated side, but I wouldn't worry about it now. You can get a primer that acts as a barrier and you should be fine.

This will be a great space.

Thanks for the comment. I have several long florescent tube lights that will go back in. They install under the loft ceiling and up at the tall ceiling. Probably end up with 6 8' up high and 4 4' lower. I will also be painting it bright white so that should help.

I believe the codes and conditions for building are different in all regions around the country. Our winters are so dry we have to install humidifiers in houses to keep from getting shocked every time you turn on the light. I think the paint on the drywall should be enough to keep condensation to a minimum. I can pull a panel from the outside if I need to check things and see how its doing. Nice thing about steel siding is the ability to come at it from the back side.

With a red bottom and black separation line, your eye will be drawn to the darker colors, and the white will fade away in the background.

Go with a dark blue line and you can claim a patriotic theme! Go with a black pin stripe between each color transition, and you get a touch of class too.

Finally got the drywall second coated and primed yesterday and today. Sure helped having the lift. I did roll the entire thing so now I'm sitting on the couch watching football. I'm beat and soar from rolling overhead. I may have to spray the paint when I get to that point. uploadfromtaptalk1447626003582.jpguploadfromtaptalk1447626040694.jpguploadfromtaptalk1447626085445.jpg

Looks nice.

Ignore the comments about the need for a vapor barrier in your climate. Building scientists no longer recommend vapor barriers. Vapor barriers may still be beneficial in extremely cold climates but the new recommendations are for vapor retarders (there is a difference).

Here's good reading material for anyone interested in the subject:

Its been long time since I updated the progress of my shop. I didnt get it finished before it got cold so didnt work on it much over the winter. Once it started warming I got rolling again and have made some good progress. My painter suggested since the bottom was going to be red that I should prime it with grey so the red doesnt turn pink. Got the grey done and started on the red. Its supposed to match the cabinets that Im putting in and its close but not perfect.

Once the paint was done up to about 10 feet I decided to start putting cabinets in and build work benches so I could at least get my tools out so I could do some of the spring maintenance items on lawn equipment, camper and trucks. I also put up some of the lighting in areas I needed it to be able to see while working.

I also started the trim on the window, door and baseboards then had to start working on items. Oil changes, brake jobs ect. are never ending around here with all the stuff I have so it was nice to have my tools back in the shop. Also figured with all the work Ill be doing I better have a stool so picked this up on line. Im a honda guy so its pretty fitting. I am breaking the shop up into areas dedicated to certain items so there will be a motorcycle area, lawn and garden equipment area and then the general do everything else area. I will have sets of tools and project specific items in each of the areas so I dont have to travel to far to find the items needed. I hope you all like it and Ill try to keep it updated better as I make progress.
