Between 265 & 485 SQ/FT 130,000 Lumen Two Car Garage

Roughly 20x20 ft garage that needed a new floor... after I moved everything out for the new floor, scope creep began!

I mentioned this project in my "welcome new member" post, but here's a dedicated thread for it.


So far - added a 20 amp circuit and several outlets (garage originally had one outlet). Run wiring for multiple LED strips on the ceiling (currently a one-bulb fixture).

Added R13 to the non-shared garage walls.

Set up and wired a condenser for an 18k mini split.

Got a Husky 52" toolbox to replace my old Craftsman 3-piece tall box.

Have a 7-piece NewAge Pro cabinet set waiting in the driveway.

Next step - cover walls with OSB, paint. Install lighting.

The house is about 30 years old. 30 years of hot summers have caused the tape to loosen from the drywall... it's a bit of a mess.

The tall ceiling - close to 10 ft - gives some storage opportunities. I had a "Garage Gator" motorized hoist for holding my collection of bikes up just above head height, but it's removed at the present.

I have too many bikes - 13 or so ? I'm planning on leaving four bike racks down at an easy-to-access height and all the rest of the bikes will go on the Garage Gator.

I'm probably going to keep that Gladiator cabinet, even though it won't match with the NewAge stuff at all. It's the nice, welded kind and it's so useful and also conveniently shallow. Maybe I should paint it white!

I’m sure the drywall finishing was not the best when installed but just enough….

Bro in law put up the OSB with my help. Used staples to hold it to the wall ... He had a bunch left over from a job.

One coat of kilz original, pretty pleased with the coverage. I put it on pretty thick.

What did you use for the seams between the OSB?

So far, there is nothing between the seams in the OSB. I was thinking about hitting the most obvious ones with some caulk (DAP Alex Plus?) before putting a top coat of paint on.

I think the Kilz has covered pretty well - I don't believe I'll be putting a second coat of primer on. I have used about half of my 5-gal priming the OSB so far... I'm hoping the drywall isn't as "thirsty" or I'll need to buy another 5 gallons to finish this job.

I added this little loft area above the garage door a few years ago and it's the source of a lot of complication. I still need to prime the OSB above and below it. And I need to prime the loft itself... I'm planning on painting it white as well, and I also want to install some lights onto it, so that corner of the garage will not be dark.

I have the underside of the loft mostly primed.

Bro in law came over and fixed the tape and mud on the walls. So I can paint the walls soon. The ceiling still needs to be retaped.

I picked up a 5-gal container of SW Duration Satin Extra White for shockingly cheap off of Facebook. This is going to be my topcoat. I'm getting a lot of jokes about "operating room" when I describe the lighting that I have planned.

It turns out my Extra White topcoat is definitely not white. I guess the label came off... or was removed.

Anyway, it's not unpleasant. Got the mini split lines run. Just need to hook it up. Practiced making flares for an hour...

I think I'm finally done painting. One kilz original and two topcoats.

I've got the LED light bars set up in the main part of the garage. It's pretty bright! I think I want to set up four more short and two long bars in the part above the door.

Added 4' light bars under the loft, and down the sides to help illuminate when the garage door is up. Added two more 8' bars over the garage door area. Now the whole place is bathed in smooth light.

Supposedly 130,000 lumens all together if you believe the Amazon listings.

All of the stuff that was in my garage is strewn over the front porch, driveway and rest of the house. It's getting kind of old to have our office FULL of tools and bikes!

So I still have a few things to do that aren't really creep -- With my boys' help, I finally moved half of the NewAge cabinets into the garage. So when I get those set up, I'll be able to move quite a bit of stuff out of the house and into the cabinets.

My plan is for one side of the garage to have room to park in, and the other side to be workspace/storage.

I REALLY need to staple up the wires for the garage door opener - so tired of walking under them.

I have bought two Amazon organizers for "stuff with handles"... shovels, rakes, etc. I am planning on putting one up high on the wall next to the car for the rarely used stuff and another organizer below it for the things we use more often - brooms, basically.

I'm going to get a generic "sports organizer" for the car wall as well.

I have a lot of bike storage that needs to get installed or re-installed... will show that as I do it.

I also need to insulate the ceiling and replace the garage door with an insulated door.

Well, shoot, guess I should've made the short cabinets flush with the front of the tall cabinets instead of the back.

Hope I don't have to do much re leveling to scoot them out.

Because I want to have a vise on the workbench, I wanted to attach the lower cabinets to the wall. Spaced them 2" off the wall with 2x4 and some OSB scraps.

Feels like this garage is finally starting to come together. Want to clean out the mess in here tomorrow and start organizing and moving back in. I think I'm going to forgo coating the floor, maybe do that in a few years if I want to.

I want to put up a backsplash for the workbench area... Want to put up a power strip and some chargers and a holder for my drills and impacts.

Nice Cannondale's The work put into will leave you satisfied for quite some time. Nothing like having a well lit space so you don't have to deal with dark spots. I was considering emptying my garage and starting fresh again but should have done it in early October before winter is quickly approaching.

Regarding Cannondales... I used to work with a guy who was from PA and knew a lot of Cannondale people.

Anyway, the blue bike I bought new in 2000... still seems modern to me, but it's in the "vintage" category now. The tandem is a 97, I think. I picked it up in Seattle over 15 years ago. Had a lot of good rides with the kids when they were younger. Still get it out once in a while.

I just ordered a new ceiling hoist for it, because the one I have is kind of worn out... the rope catches when you try to lower it down. I would like to get the front wheel up a little higher.

I used to have an F1000 Cannondale hardtail (w/Headshok) but sold it. And my wife's bike is a 90's R400. I've ridden it a few times when my own was not available.

I have a bunch of other bikes, but the blue R800 and the tandem is the only one I kept out in the garage during this makeover. And I added my Giant Trance to the garage a couple of weeks ago. Eventually, I hope to move the other bikes in. I should get rid of most of them, lol.

Yeah, it looked nice when it was just the cabinets in the garage, but now I'm trying to move stuff in, so it's going to get cluttered again. Just trying to keep it clean and organized, though.

Right now, I have about seven bags of leaves from this weekend, had to move them into the garage because we've been getting heavy rain.

I was actually wanting the black cabinets with gray doors, but I was able to order these from Bed, Bath, and Beyond with a 25% coupon. BBB only had this color, so it would have cost me $500 more or so to get a different color (I probably would have bought from Costco, then I would have got the metal backsplash and light kit).

But I ended up really liking the white. Makes it a little easier to see stuff in the back of the cabinets, I think. I suppose they will get dirty and greasy inside.

I bought a cheapish Rubbermaid type shed for all of the yard/garden stuff and got it all out of the garage - SO much better not having that stuff hanging on the walls.

I also like the white cabinets - black is so 2000's....

I would love that. Not sure where I'd put the shed, though. My yard is pretty small.

And I think our HOA could have an issue with a Rubbermaid shed - I believe I looked into it. But maybe I should consider it again. I think if your shed matches the house, they may allow it.

Mine just went in the back yard right near the garage man door, similar in color/trim to the house. But then there's no HOA where I live so I didn't have to worry about that. But.....my wife was always aware of what our back yard might look like to the neighbors - I never gave it a thought till she mentioned it one day....so now I try to keep the clutter to a minimum. The shed helps - I bought one big enough that the mower and other stuff also fits, not just the brooms and shovels and such.

You know, if I could think of a good place to put one, I might just try it. Our HOA is pretty reasonable, I think. I've never dealt with any complaints.

Maybe I could paint it to match my siding and then no one would notice! Lol

I used to crit race in the late 80's and early 90's and had a few R800 2.8's they were great for the sprint races, but horrible if you rode say a time trial.

Made some feet... 1" PVC, coupler, and plug. Bolt with washers through the plug and screwed into the bottom of the rack. Let me set back this sports organizer onto the knee.

First had to cut off and grind down the rebar sticking out.

Bike gear shelves. I made it this way so if a little rain is blown in through an open garage door, the stuff will still be sheltered.



I wish I had a table saw; then my shelves wouldn't be so crude. I use a square of 2x2 furring strips for a frame and attach to the walls and a vertical piece of OSB.
