Its just a tool
I totally agree on one level. BUT, on another level, I came from dirt poor and this has conditioned me.
I have several STARRETT $1000 levels. I can feel my blood pressure rise at the thought of someone using one of these levels as a hammer.
It is all entertainment in the end. I watched a video detailing the cost of running a Top Fuel dragster per second. Measuring the cost in torque wrenches instead of greenbacks, it would be a few.

Its a good reason to have respect for the tools you have worked hard to own, but not to expect others to do the same.

Lots of people waste lots of money on lots of things

If you haven't seen a video of the fuel injector flow for top fuel, check it out. More flow than my garden hose

Why would that bend taking lug nuts off though? Maybe I’m ignorant but I couldn’t imagine they would be torqued that tight. I imagine 80-100 ft lbs would be it considering I’m pretty sure they take them off with 1/2 impacts. But maybe I’m wrong I don’t know to be honest lol.

Center lock nuts are wildly tight. Like 400+ ftlbs

Yes and that just adds to my anger. I'm glad I wasn't there because if I was, I would've been choking the sum ***** that ruined that torque wrench.
I didn't watch the race, or the attached video, but I've worked in auto racing, for money. A pit stop, as others have pointed out, is a high stress environment. If you work for a race team, getting the car and its driver back on track as soon as possible is the #1 priority. It trumps everything else. Every second -not every minute, but every second- that ticks by is costing them track position, and thus costing money. If one of the crew guys took your advice and refused to attempt removing the wheel nut because it might damage a $1400 torque wrench, he would very likely be looking for work somewhere else by Monday morning. Those guys would have gladly ruined ten torque wrenches to get that car back out there, and management wouldn't think anything of it. Their job is to get that car back in the race, whatever it takes.

Someone abusing MY tools deserves to be shot. Someone abusing their own tools...meh.

Alliteration in your post is strong.

This is for all the guys who say I have a long ratchet so who needs a breaker bar.

I’m more interested in seeing what some hair in the racing wheel would do. Also, would a little hair throw off the torque wrench calibration?

The torque wrench was probably the cheapest thing they broke while at the track. I don't think the team lost any sleep over it.

Even if the teams had to pay for it (they don't), if that torque wrench worked and got them out a few positions ahead, it would pay for itself easily..

Nascar.jpeg

That was 2022 Phoenix.

This years Daytona had a payout of over $28 million
This years Atlanta had a payout of over $9 million
Bristol last week was over $8 million

Plus sponshorship money (every sticker on the car....each company paid for that spot)
Plus merchandise sold and a dozen other avenues of revenue.

A $1400 breaker bar to them is barely pocket change...

If someone hands me an impact gun model I've never used before, I'm sure as hell going to give it a spin to make sure it's turning in the right direction.

Anyone who would use any level as a hammer should be put in jail. Even an HF level. I hope you don't know anyone who would even consider such a thing, let alone do it. I thought I had the trashiest friends in the world because they put diet coke into single malt scotch....

Oh man, you should try Kroger brand ginger ale with some pappy. They really complement each other.

Problem solved. I do not have any friends.:canada2: I do not lend tools, ever. I feel sick thinking of Glenfiddich with Diet Coke.

Well, you have a friend in northwest Louisiana if you ever come by this way -- we'll sip some excellent scotch and shake our heads over the tragic decline of civilization and the scope of human depravity!

Some teams get free stuff via sponsorship deals, but teams buy a lot of their equipment like anyone else.

Probably not. What can be over the pit wall during a race is another matter.
If their tire gun couldn't get it off, I'm surprised they would think a breaker bar would work.
Saw an article some time back about the engineering of those torque wrenches. They are absolute monsters.

As to the original post- looking at the picture of the bbar, it looks bent from pulling it clockwise. From the film, the tire was front left. Distinct possibility I’m wrong, I thought the new centerlock wheels had right-hand threads on the left side of the car, and left-hand on the right. Can someone who really knows NASCAR wheels turn on the knowledge?

Doesn't surprise me in the least that they used what they had to try and solve the problem. But I'd never be that upset over seeing someone misuse a tool. I've been frustrated before, but that's only because someone didn't listen when I told them the correct way to do something. Even then...if they break their own tool...I'm laughing. Not raging lol.

Also...I've been here a few years, and I've apparently never seen the "Shopping Cart" rant.
