Lots of people can't afford a car, or have to take care of the one they have.

You're just getting emotionally attached to a tool for some reason.
We take care of our tools because of all the hard work and sacrifices we put in to earn the money to buy them. That guy that wrecked that torque wrench didn't pay a penny for it. Please tell me you understand the double standard here.

They have way more money than we do.

Some teams get free stuff via sponsorship deals, but teams buy a lot of their equipment like anyone else.

Does NASCAR have rules on which tools can be in the pit area?
Probably not. What can be over the pit wall during a race is another matter.
If their tire gun couldn't get it off, I'm surprised they would think a breaker bar would work.

I think eventually you'll get it. It's the same thing as lighting a stack of $100 bills on fire in front of a homeless shelter.
Based on this logic, no one should ever do or have anything nice as long as there are homeless shelters.

Maybe they did refuse to warranty it. But Snap-on also spends way more than a torque wrench to be a sponsor so it's kind of moot.

Hell the tool was probably given to them.
I don’t think Snap On sponsors them, their logo isn’t on their car anywhere.

Its only a torque wrench, not like he was beating a child
Somebody somewhere in this world really needed that torque wrench but can't afford it. I think instead of destroying the torque wrench, NASCAR should've donated it to somebody who really needs it and is willing to take care of it.

Your trolling gets old and really takes away from this place in general.

Its a tool. Tools get used to do jobs. Sometimes they get broken to get the job done. This is the difference between actual mechanics and many of the tool polishers who inhabit this site.

Yes it ***** that the wrench got twisted. BUT it was in a race where time is of the essence. Plus it was a likely a sponsored tool. Would it have made any difference if they twisted up a 3/4 L872 ratchet and handle? Not to me. They grabbed the first thing they thought would give them the leverage to remove the centrelock in the shortest time possible.

When your house is on fire, should the firemen look for the key under the rug or just kick the damn door open and put out the fire?

I don't care what they do to their cars, but what they did to that torque wrench is just morally wrong.
Trust me, when we are at the track and racing the clock to get the car back out there, we really aren't that concerned with what we use as a hammer. And we're relatively low budget. I think you need a reality check.

Brand sponsorship alone was valued at >$727 million last year. NASCAR could probably donate a few torque wrenches if they wanted to do so.

You really think that's trolling? I have faith that somebody reading this thread understands how I feel.
Just like your hair in the shopping cart wheels BS. I'm surprised you've gotten away with it as long as you have. This place is generally pretty quick to bounce posters like that.

The team sacrificed a lot of time and money to get in the race. They're going to do whatever they can to remain in it. Please tell me you understand how races work. 🙄

I was a heat of the battle thing there was no malicious intent I’m sure. I just find it odd that they had a 3/4” torque wrench of all tools but not a breaker bar in their pit box.

Snap On does not warranty abused tools, if a team has to buy a new torque wrench, $ 1400.00 is a drop in the ocean, they spend more than that on coffee for the team I am willing to bet

Think of all the tires and fuel just wasted during the race!

IT'S JUST A WRENCH! Homeless people typically have no need for one, get over it. Pick something every one of does and it could be deemed wasteful or extravagant by folks in lesser circumstances.
Racing is an expensive endeavor, this broken wrench means nothing. Perhaps its metal will be recycled into some noble device.

Another example of NASCAR ruining itself by not using lug nuts like a real car!!!

So I have just deleted a paragraph I wrote speculating on how it would become so stuck. I was thinking of a center lock nut ala Indy cars, F1, etc. I thought these roundy round guys DID use regular (sort of) lug nuts. Glued to the wheels with trim adhesive as I recall seeing long ago.

So they give a little bit more of the backstory last weekend. It was stuck so they brought out a higher torque impact but instead of loosening it with that they inadvertently tightened it more.

ETA the new cup care are basically road race cars now with IRS, sequential transaxles, digital mirrors etc.. They went with a center lock lug because they were afraid a loose lug nut would break the new 18” aluminum wheels.

DID is the key word
I saw a (probably) homeless person this afternoon with a sign asking for gas money. Any idea how much race fuel costs?
I saw one holding a sign asking for a torque wrench. Hope he didn’t see the race.

The F'ing thing belongs to that team... The team OWNs that wrench.... they can treat it however they want. Regardless of how you feel. They could walk off the SO truck with a brand new replacement wrench and throw it in the ocean.... They can do that. It belongs to them. NOT YOU. lolol.
