i had posted this previously on a thread....

a set of swivel head metric sockets, plus a 36mm socket, a 32mm wrench
semi deep impact sockets
short and deepwell sockets for 1/4, 3/8, and 1/2
all torx and E-torx sockets
allen head sockets
basic set of combination wrenches, basic set of from 8mm up to 19 (obviously it's good to have the larger size too)
oil filter housing sockets
extensions for all 3 drive sizes. adapters to go up and down all drive sizes. swivels for all drive sizes
my advise is anything 1/2" drive you buy, go ahead and get it as an impact or industrial finish type, so you can use it all with an air gun
a good 72+ tooth ratchet for 3/8" and 1/4" drive. swivel head is nice
the best air gun you can afford
a whiz-wheel, angle or straight is fine. probably angle would be best though
a good screwdriver set, including phillips, flathead, and torx. you don't need a gazillion of them, just a nice set of them. i have used my ratcheting screwdriver alot with the bits i have, comes in handy alot.
a good set of mallots, brass hammer, and a good weight metal hammer. ball peen preferred.
a good set of drill bits, not used often but when you need it it's nice to have.
breaker bar and torque wrench(es), and a good prybar set(striking).
A good Fluke 88 (and knowing how to use it), will be your best friend.
get a set of wheel hangers, they make life much easier.
torch is great for loosening rusted bolts
Ratcheting box end wrenches up to 24mm - this is a must
Vice grips/pliers
duck tape... zip ties
Slide hammer kit
ohhh and 6 point... don't do 12 point
Fan Clutch Tools
Roll Cart
electric/battery/pneumatic screwdriver/drill
air hammer
Radiator hose pics
Hose pinch off pliers
easy out
tap and die set
Exhaust Donut Tool
Long HD Dykes
hood prop
trim tools
vacuum brake bleeder
crowfeet set
ratcheting screwdriver set
brass drifts
chisels and files

i'm tired of typing but wait theres more!

and again.... in spite of the many comments.... DON'T BUY A BOX

You have one already, buy tools, tools make money, you'll have time later to buy a box

This guy got it to a T. Except dont rule out 12 point your going to need them. Just dont buy a full set of every socket drive. 3/8 deep and shallow has worked for me.

I graduated from tech school going on 5 years now and the first things I bought when I got out was impacts and sockets. I bought NAPA and Grey Pneumatic sockets and IR tools. The sockets have held up great and only had to replace ones that I lost. You will need metric and SAE sockets, some do cross but not all. Also you will need 12 and 6 point sockets, maybe not at first but you will. A good E and T torx sockets, don't get impact they will round then round the head of the screw, and get a good set.
I agree don't buy big money items until you know what you need or like. When you do buy torque wrenches get the electronic with degrees.
That's all I can think of now.

For impact sockets, I highly recommend the Ingersoll Rand SK34C86 set. It is a very complete set, and the sockets are high quality. I've had mine for over 2 years. Search around online for the best deal.

I've been happy with my CM impact sockets, the 3/8 & 1/2 complete set isn't priced too bad. I wouldn't rule out the big Gearwrench sets either, tooltopia has them for a pretty good price. They've got one that goes up to 36mm IIRC, which would do double duty as an axle nut set.

I'd spend as much of this money as needed on the big things, like $300+. Little piddly $20 purchases, like a BFH, you can make those out of a paycheck every week, whereas you might have a hard time saving up a few hundred for a big purchase.

Personally, I really like my Matco 88T ratchets. I got most of my collection off ebay, but honestly they're not horribly priced even off the truck. I'd even go so far as to say that would be a great place to use truck credit... buy one or two, pay it/them off, don't pay any interest, get good warranty service and a rapport with your driver. I've got the locking flex in 1/4 and 3/8 flavors, and the 8" 1/4 and 15" 3/8. I'd go for the locking flex-heads first since they give you more leverage and versatility, see if you even feel the need for the longer ones... some people just don't care for them.
