Very nice work and nice equipment.

How do you like your PM1236? I looked at that lathe briefly when talking to Matt @ QMT but opted to go with the Taiwanese PM1340GT instead. I know a lot of people have the 1236 from QMT and love it.

Mike.

Its a good little shop lathe, and fitted with a DRO I can hit .0005 all day. I am still hunting for a Hardinge tool room or 10EE, but I can find about 50 other things to spend 5k on! Matt was the reason I bought from him to be honest. Everyone has them in different forms, but his pricing was right, and when I wanted to talk to him about the purchase, he was available. I felt customer service down the road would be easier.

I agree, Matt was great to deal with. Although the extended delay was a bit much to stomach at times. I was originally told 8-10 weeks and it ended up being 22 months on the lathe and 20 on the mill. I understand the shipping and customs delays to an extent but I would have felt better had the "actual" time frame or more realistic timeframe been offered up front. I still would have bought the equipment but I also would have held on to my previous machine just a tad longer and not had to turn as much work away.

That said, I too looked for a Hardinge, Monarch, Leblond or the like for over 9 months previously. Couldn't find anything that didn't need a restoration on and I wanted to make chips and money right away, I didn't want a two year restoration project on a piece of equipment. My Taiwanese 13x40 and Taiwanese 9x35 vertical knee mill will do everything I need them to do and I am 100% happy with them.

Again, great work/craftsmanship.

Mike,

I feel your pain. I don't do this as a hobby so the idea of fixing or restoring a machine befor using it didn't make an ounce of sense to me. 22 months!! That's nuts, I got one from his facility, so it was only a few weeks He explained if I wanted to order a specific package I would be waiting a few months, I would have gone off the deep end if it took almost 2 years.

Impressive size shop to say the least. I'm assuming you're leasing a building? Just due to the size I can't believe that's your own personal garage.

Was in Botany Village today getting Chinese food and was thinking about you and wondering how the business is doing. ;)

Its a building/with a yard my father is using for his construction equipment, helps spread the hurt around haha.

Thanks for the shop pics.

I take it the first set was the old shop and the white walled is the new digs.

You got it! Should have some work rolling out soon

Love the shop! What type of Hass is that? I've been wanting to get in to CNC and took some classes on it.

TM1-p, Basically the smallest fully enclosed VMC you can get from HAAS. Great little machine, but Im already looking down the road for a larger machine

Impressive work! How do you determine your designs? CAD? What sort of FEA or flow analysis tools do you use?

Looks good man. Glad to see you doing what you love. Shop is the same here for the most part just different faces. If you had the cash a waterjet is great to have. It's a local man making mother... When it's running that is. Take care.

TIMMY! Whats up?!

Waterjet is to expensive for me, the maintenance and the purchase.
I let my plasma table go for the CNC last year, but I am going to build or buy another because they are damn near indispensable once you get used to having it.

Doing good man. Looks like you're really getting into some cool fab work. Yea Waterjets are way exspensive and constantly need maintenance. I've always wondered about the differences in a plasma table. Cheaper to run I'm sure. Good to run into you.

I used plastic tubing caps like this from Mcmaster

I made a separate set for holding long material and a third to convert the truck into a dump hauler.

I am so jealous of you guys that are into this now. I'm a tool and die maker from a while ago and the CNC stuff was cut on a paper tape and fed into the machine. When they started to talk about sending data to the tool room we were dumbfounded that they could do that.

Enjoy the times that you are in. Your work is superb and you have a lot of skill and a good eye. So few will look at the aesthetics like you do and you will attract the customers that appreciate it. Really well done and like others have said, thank you for your service; it means the world to most of us.

I try and stay on top of the technology, but its overwhelming, and when you are the guy welding, machining, advertising, dealing with customers, billing, shipping, and every other hat the day requires, its tough to make it to a trade show or read the new literature.

Thanks very much, I really try to pay attention to the little details as well as functionality of the parts I produce.

And you are very welcome, I was proud to serve for as long as I did.

You got me!! I still hadn't tapped the holes when I took the pic. Thats still no excuse, they should be programed in! Busy is an understatement.

Former Tool and Die here as well, Same era for me.. Paper and tape, then G&M code, then conversational, but mainly old fashioned Bridgeport's and Clausings, until my knees gave out.

So I switched to IT, and hate it, not as interesting at all:willy_nil

Nice work.

Just curious if you are a licensed professional engineer, as use of the word "engineer" in a business capacity is a pretty significant liability.

AFAIK in some jurisdictions, merely putting the word "engineer" on a business card or using it in the name of a legal entity is the same as claiming to be a licensed professional engineer. People have gone to prison over it, others just lost everything. Hate to see bad things happen to good people.

Most self proclaimed engineers get away with it because they are an employee of someone else, and unless someone gets killed the so called "industrial exemptions" cover their ***. But those of us who offer our services to the public, and/or have our name on the building have to be very careful how we represent and market ourselves in the litigious society we currently reside.

We were steered away from using the word "engineering" in our entity name by every business consultant we talked to, and all the partners were indeed licensed PEs!

Just yet another biz snafu to ponder. lol. Good luck.

What material is the roll bar? Looks really light colored for mill scale?

Im not a fan of a full sharp notch like that. I always grind back to full thickness or close to it. If you use a nice small tig bead, your not really holding onto much material there, just that sharp edge. Just my opinion. Im not an Engineer, LOL.

Bullnerd-
Its mild steel. I just cleaned all of the scale off.
This was the first roll bar I have done, so I am refining my technique for sure.
If I understand you, you knock down the sharpest point and create a more rounded edge? I will give that a shot. Any suggestions to make me better I am open too. Thanks

Yes, that is the standard for making bikes.
Grind the thin part off the "ear".
Also, make sure the root of the miter is in contact, not the ear. Otherwise, things pull much worse. Not a huge issue fora roll cage, but undesirable.
