Great F1. I'd do a full resto on her. I can't wait to see how your build turns out.

If I was in a place to come up, I'd work a deal for her driveline and front end for my son's T bucket. He and I are both wanting period built T's around the 40's and 50's style with older inline fours or sixes. Preferably flatheads. That old Kaiser Frazer supercharged Continental flat head six really gets my dander up. The cars most likely will never see the interstate with us or speeds over 60mph, except in short bursts.

I hear you on not needing another project but I would not have passed that truck opportunity either. It looks pretty solid from the pictures. The dash is amazing and even the floors look pretty solid. The paint clean up is looking good. I love the look of that white paint poking through the surface rust. After you clean it completely and cover in clear it will have the perfect look topped off with the faded logos you have planned. Another awesome vehicle to add to your stable.

Neat truck! I'm glad you're going to clean up the rust staining. Another method is using CLR calcium, lime and rust remover - there was a good discussion about it on the HAMB board a few years back: https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum...d-gold-108k-original-miles-patina-rod.520460/

I actually tried CLR and was not impressed at all. I've had way better luck with either Prep & Etch made by Kleen Strip or an automotive metal prep. A lot of guys go the CLR route because its cheap, but if you have to buy 4 times the amount then what are you really saving in the long run :dunno:

That's good to know - I haven't actually tried it myself, just going by what I read online (and of course everything on the Internet is always true. ;) )

Either way I really like the truck, and look forward to seeing it after you've had a chance to clean it up.

When you said “bring back as much of the original paint as I can”, I thought, what paint. Wow, there is paint. Learned something new today. Rust staining is removable. Thanks.
Love your idea for the truck. A station needs a good shop truck. Maybe a little boom on back so you can drag “disabled” vehicles back for some TLC.

I had the same thought, "what paint"! That's pretty neat that the Kleen Strip will clean it up that well.

Joe,

Love the project. I read through the whole thread over the last 3 weeks or so. Great job! Looking forward to seeing the car projects that you do in the garage....those are what interest me the most! Love looking at work that people do who know what they are doing.

I'm traveling through Iowa on my way to Salt Lake City and could not pass up the chance to check out your place in person. I stopped by last night around 7:30pm and sorry I missed you but had no way to know if you would be there working late.
You have a really nice place to work and display your growing collection. It looks better in person than even the good pictures. You are to be commended for your contribution to what I found to be a very nice downtown area of Perry.

It was fun to meet Dino as well and today I met his western cousin while filling up with gas in Nebraska.

Sorry I missed you. Normally chances would have been good for me to be there around that time, but I moved the Customline to the shop at home so I could start final paint prep. I was at home working on it. It still humbles me that people go out of their way just to stop by and see it in person. Hopefully Iowa treated you well on your way across.

Looking good as usual. I just swung through the '30s garage resto in Philo, Ill this weekend, so a short trip over to Perry is coming soon. I did spot another Ford of similar age to your new addition forsale in Nevada. I can snap a pic this week if you like.

Joe,

Great find on the F51. Don't look at as another project. Look at it as a rescue.....it was meant to be for you to find it.

The Custom Line looks great as well. Did you ever do any research to find out where the Custom Line was final assembled? I am guessing the F51 was made at the Ford River Rouge complex.

Thanks Clark

The Customline was built in Dallas, TX & the F1 was built in Chicago, IL

Progress on the '53 Customline. I painted most of it yesterday minus the hood and decklid. They will be done separately. These pics are straight off the gun. I'll let the paint cure a week or two before I color sand the car.

Joe,

Great job on the Customline paint work. Love the colors. That choice will also give you many options on the interior colors.

I may get up to Cedar Rapids sometime this fall. I will have to plan a detour to Perry.

Thanks also for the response on the assembly plant locations. Given the state of the domestic auto industry many of those past plants are long gone. Here in STL we had GM / Chevrolet Truck and Corvette, Chrysler, and Ford. They are all gone now with the minor exception of GM. They moved the plant west to Wentsville outside of STL.

The are several VIN decoders you can find on the web. You can look up your historic cars to find out more about the date and location of manufacture. It might make for interesting additional documentation to your builds.

Thanks

I need to ask a stupid question (well, because I 'm honest enough to acknowledge I am stupid). If it looks that good, why color sand it? The neighbor painted my Radio Flyer Wagon, and the paint is flawless. I don't want to touch it. I mean no peal, no runs, perfect. Am I wrong to not touch it?
