Just finished up a pretty big project at the station. For the last few years I had a small, but irritating "sometimes" leak in the office roof. It was in the area not seen by the public and conditions had to be just right for it to leak. I looked, but never could find where it was getting at so over the winter I saved up money to buy the materials for a new stone coated steel shingle roof. Steel shingles have a look that compliments the architecture and offer long lasting durability. The down side is their cost and it is a pretty tedious install , at least on this roof it was.

After pulling the old roof off I found where the leak was and it caused a little more damage to the decking then I anticipated. It was making it way under the cap they used to transition from the small flat roof to the concrete tile. Looking down it would be to the left of the valley at the top. I had to patch in several feet of 1x10 decking. Thankfully no damage to the rafters underneath.

After the office roof was done I had about 110 feet of overhang to complete on the east side. This little section wraps around the front on the north side, had pretty extensive rot so I had to rebuilt it.

Another section where the addition meets up to the original portion of the station had a bird condo inside that was pretty impressive. so obviously if birds can get in so could water. That corner had to be rebuilt also.

Here is the finished product...should easily outlast me. Which is good because I never want to do it again.

Gorgeous inside and outside...... and now new inside and out.
With covid still running around have you seen a decrease in foot traffic or is it still a sight to visit locally?

Last summer was a tad slower, but never really stopped. This summer has been busier than ever. I'm noticing lots of out of state plates. It has been back to business as usual for quite a while around here.

So those shingles are steel? They look great. Honestly from the pictures they look like a asphalt architectural shingle.

Interesting roof product. Always nice to get new glamour shots. With the size of that parking lot across the street, I'm thinking a big GJ drive in one weekend.

Good Luck!!!! I look forward to seeign the finished product. Wasn't Sinclair the gas station that had the Dinosaur mascot? A Brontosaurus? I bet you will have some movie companies looking you up

Yes they are a steel shingle that is coated. Each one is approximately 12 inches tall and 52 inches long. They lock into a special starter strip on the first course then onto the lower course after that. All the screw fasteners are concealed by the next course above it. You can see how they lock together in this pic.

Great job on the roof. Was this your first time using this type of roofing project?

I’m always impressed with your work and finished products.
Thank you, yes this was the first metal type roof I've done. I watched a few youtube videos for install tips and the manufacturer had pretty detailed installation instructions available, I was originally planning to hire this job out, but either kept getting the run around from contractors or they never bothered to show up to give a bid.

Great to see an update, the roof looks great and it will be nice not worrying about the leak.
Any car project updates you want to share?

Everything looks period correct and nicely prepared, the station presents itself very well.
The only thing that seems out of place "in my opinion" is the bricks under the tail.
I have seen the level of work produced from you and its a very high level of quality.
Could I suggest making something "Sinclairish" oil can, gas can, brake fluid can, that's solid.
Much respect for your work.

A car buddy from about an hour away does a little Sunday car cruise every year and asked if it would be alright if they stopped by the station for a few pics. Of course I said they were more than welcome and offered to open it up for the group. The blue 28 Model A roadster pickup is his.

Wow--Joe--is all I can say--I have read/re-read this whole thread. What an achievement--what a love of work.
My second 'real job' was at an ESSO station on Saturdays--I learned a lot there-

Thank you-from another old gear head.
