A just put up new YT video as it sits right now. Oh so close but still a lot to do. I have now started on other projects. Shop is total upside down. I will continue to tinker with this truck as time allows but right now I can enjoy it as is! What a total relief to finally get to this stage!

So I've been a fan of the Ford 427 ever since buying a 61 Unibody with one in it for a power plant..

61ford03.jpg

61ford08.jpg

Have kicked myself many times over for selling that one, and for many years have been living vicariously through Randy as he worked on his 427 shortbed 66 Ranger. I must admit that when he pulled his 427 engine out for the last time, I shed a tear. But I understand, getting single digit MPG's takes the fun out of anything real quick.. Fast forward to this past weekend and here I was in the Phoenix area. Had to stop and finally meet Randy in person, get the shop tour, and check out all his builds... We were checking out the shortbed (Raptor) build and he suggested we go for a ride. Even as much as I like the 427 and wish it was still under the hood, his present drivetrain has made a believer out of me. It is just plain NASTY compared to the 427. Add to that mid 20 MPG's and you have the best of both worlds..

Randy, thanks for your hospitality, awesome to final meet in person. Well done on the Ranger, basically a brand new truck, a wolf in sheep's clothing.. The details are amazing..

Thanks a bunch Robert! Means a lot coming from you. Great to finally be able to meet you. I sure hope you don't have any bruising on your arms where I had to twist them to get you to take the truck for a drive? I am finally able to figure out where the lead goes you take out of those car bodies! Down to your right foot? Of course there was no encouragement on my part . . . I should get the photo radar ticket in the mail soon it should read 86 mph in a 35 mph zone . . . Not MY photo behind the wheel! All kidding in good fun.

Just imagine adding another 100 HP to where it's at now and its 427 who? Pulling the 427 was a really tough decision. MPG was huge but after spending 5k on the fitech garbage efi and still no work it put me in the poor house with $ on a credit card trying to get it to work. Big part of letting it go was financial too. It was a great chapter after waiting 40+ years for a '66 with a 427 but old age kicked in and now making it a long distance driver. Hand calc on the MPG shows it's getting a bit better mileage than indicated by trip meter but very close. 446 miles with 161 miles remaining on rear tank plus another reserve tank good for 460 more miles and that's after a ton of leadfoot plus a hour or so idling to charge the AC etc. Combination driving. In TOW MODE no less. That's a 1067 miles on a single fill of fuel! Last fill with the 427 I only went 88 miles on a tank of fuel!

Without question this has been the biggest build challenge I have had and it's not over yet!
With breakin miles done I changed oil n filter last night then started the programming installed the new TCM then loaded program from old TCM onto it and NOPE still no mode select but I did find some very interesting stuff that came up on codes I had not seen before. It seems like there is known issues with the 2018-20 trucks and a procedure to follow to try to correct it. I tried the "As Built" like it said but I got a error message. Wrong configuration between PCM, TCM BCM. This most likely means I will need to add all new wiring then add ALL components as configured on the truck as delivered to properly make it all match! Another few years of messing with it and I may get it.

Time to get on to other projects.

Really appreciate you following along! Metal Master Robert gave me a few pointers on other projects like the wave in bedside on Eco2. No confidence on my part I could handle it but after a bit of schooling from Robert I will now attempt.

Robert, Did you happen to notice the scooter hanging from rafters in back room? It's the one you built fender for. Another project needs to be done. We may have skipped all the project stuff in storage containers.

Once again really appreciate you taking time to drive up. And thanks for the T-Shirts! Especially that you were well on your way and had to turn around to deliver them . . LOL

Will make it a point to stop by your place if n when we do the Lower 48 state trip.

At least you got to see the worlds messiest shop! Cleanup this week with a bit of hired help.

I missed the scooter... I guess I was distracted by all the super solid and NOS Effie parts. Unreal.. I wouldn't know how to act with such rust free projects..

major news!
Mike @ MPT was able to force transmission to shift normal mode! Much much nicer to drive “normal” at least Robert got to experience what it was doing. Didn’t really need brakes for normal driving. Now the transmission shift up is more with throttle opening and when throttle of it’s not as aggressive downshift.

fill of tank now and it shows 707 miles to empty!

Major shop cleaning in process this week. Hired a bit of help. Time to start next project!

next up is F350 TT & soon Rainbow 🌈 Ranger.

AC quit in shop again but been having lots of rain. Only 70 deg right now. Haven’t seen that for low temp in many months.

Last tank using hand calc method the mpg was 22.45 slightly more than vehicle calc 22.0. Using 20.7 gallons to go 464.7 miles.
look at time it took! 11.05 hours. Lots of idling for AC charge and key on for programming.

during testing I found 25+ mpg possible but one has to keep speed max to 60 mph. Anything over 50-55 mph it seems to drop 1.5 mpg per every 5 mph. Will see what happens now with it no longer in tow mode.

some may wonder why time spent worrying about mpg? Just nice to know when planning a 9000 mi trip! Not only that but when I get in the mpg mode it helps keep my foot out of it!
Many times so far there are places I would have been flying low only to see a cop hiding!

will prob try a tank closer to 75 mpg to see how close I can get to 20 mpg.

20 mpg per 45 gallons gives me the possible 900 mi per tank.

did a datalog before rains started so will see what MPT can do with final tune!

next up is tune on E50 to see how close I can get to 600hp/600tq at rear tire! Prob a 20% mpg loss but who cares at that point?
Smiles per gallon will far outweigh mpg.

looks like it said 722 mi to E. That’s on 27 gallons. Might be bit of calibration to do.

I have 11 or 12 of these airline carts I use for storage where I can roll them near. They have gotten very mixed up and unorganized & it’s taking a ton of time to do so.

the wiring mess is new harnesses coming up for next Eco build prob not mentioned yet. Also will get used to help diagnose issue with F100Raptor

Seller will not budge from 6k. Just too much with total shot 7.50-17 in wheels that are split rims and 6 lug vs 5 or 8 lug. Too many unknowns. Only 1350 mi per yr... possible not likely especially if it always ran n drive never parked long periods.

Yea, 6k for just about any long bed, unrestored pickup is a lot. Rare or not they just aren't that popular.

Sunrise photos look good.
My 0.02cents, rather than buy another project, spend more time drive the 66 Raptor. It looks fabulous.
That's the plan! Actually going into sell mode vs buy mode. Couple more motorcycles to sell but gotta paint them first.

Do a Interior swap on the '97 F350 (dk blue one) then sell it

Thinking about selling the '65 F600 but should get it running driving first

White '97 F350 & Rainbow Ranger next up but still trying to get fans to kick on in F100 Raptor. It's fine if I don't get stuck in stopngo traffic but need to work anyway.

I expected to get the call today to have F100Raptor on display in a dealership but call never came. Long story but will touch on it at a later time. Still garage cleaning/organizing mode.

Surely don’t need another ‘66 but wow is it tempting!
Problem is rare does not always mean valuable.

That F350 is neat. Can't be too many like that still around, but I agree, rarity does not equal value. Those 6-lug wheels & 17" tires reduce the value a fair bit, imo. I believe that is the first '66 I've seen with the "mismatch" bed. Did not realize they did those through the '66 MY. Don't believe I have ever seen one newer than '64 with it.

I'm also in the "put the $$$/effort in the F100Raptor" camp. That truck is a rolling work of art, and I am very happy you are sharing it with us!

Decision made not buying it at this time. Let the seller dream . .

Still fighting the no fans even though wiring checks out. Total fine no fans unless I stop for longer periods. Goes to show how good the cooling system really is especially while AC is on and no fans. Narrowing it down but still unsure.

On the 3rd week of cleaning up the shop to better start the next projects. Tons of Rain and Humid weather causing AC to freeze up in main shop. Humidity has to be under 55% for it to work. Called AC guy no response in nearly a week. The split units are simply not worth the time and or $$. Nothing but a headache since install. Junk after just a few years old. When working very cheap to keep on but UNABLE to keep up or maintain even with door open for just 30 seconds to 1 minute. Takes HOURS to cool down again and if temp is much over 100 they run all day and cannot keep shop at temp selected.

Might be time to finish another big project then sell it to put awning/cover over front of shop, update AC maybe foam roof on main shop. Backroom with just foam roof zero insulation is much easier to keep cool.

Don’t underestimate the importance of roof and wall insulation. Will save a ton of energy on cooling costs, will add comfort, and will allow your equipment to function properly. Sounds like your unit is undersized for the task.

Split units? Like mini-split? Or traditional condenser, coil and air handler?

Pictures?

Im looking forward to pics of the F100 Raptor in all of the picturesque (sp?) settings you journey to, seeing bugs on the grill, and the joy of simply cleaning it up after those trips.
My garage needs some cleanup to after just a little maintenance work, so I imagine the scale of cleanup and organization you have will take some time, lol.

Hahaha, first time I've seen that one

The unit that works great is in side shop with zero insulation anywhere, It just has foam roof. Unit it main shop is one giving issues and its fully insulated, sheet rocked, painted etc. It has shingle roof which is a issue so much heat. Main shop runs east/west and Side shop is north south. It's very comfy year round. Foam roof was a total change. Side shop as weather cools the shop does same where as main shop does opposite. Yes side shop should be insulated too but after I sold my semi trailer for storage I built a ton of shelves in side shop and now would be near impossible to insulate finish. West wall is insulated sheet rocked which is east wall of main for at least 25'

Split type units handler on ground evaporator on wall. Main shop has 2 wall units which can vary in temp 10-14 deg even though both run off same ground unit. Never did work right from day 1. Side shop is one ground/ wall. Did have a tiny leak at one point where freon was added but in general has worked better. It's more cost effective to just leave them run vs changing temp or shutting them off. Neither unit in my opinion is sized properly. For house yes but not for a shop where they have large overhead doors. Outside temps get 100 deg plus they can't keep up. Lesson learned. Will try to get pics later today been trying to make progress on fixing fans, cruise and shift mode on the F100Raptor. All new wiring laid out on table then trying to compare to what is in truck now trying to find the issues. Appears to be in the built in relay's in battery junction box. One wire at a time will take me another 50 yrs trying by myself. Need too many naps . .

Kind of a mix now bit of work a bit of cleaning but shop taking shape very slowly. I simply have too much stuff! Painting weather only happens a very short time 2x per year and approaching it right now. Will have to change gears once again. Miss every deadline I attempt to set. The '97 F350 just gotta get done. Nearly 22' frame length is taking up too much space but does make a good workbench for junk!

Sounds like a multi-split setup. One condenser (outside) and more than one evaporator (inside) connected to that one condenser.

As I understand it, the installation will make or break it. The piping details can be pretty finicky.

Recovery after opening an overhead door would be an expected problem. Probably comparable to opening most of the doors and windows in your house, and see how long it takes for the AC to recover. Your house probably has 8 or 9 foot ceilings and your shop is taller- 10, 12 feet? More? Much more volume of air to cool again compared to the same square feet of house.

While being undersized is certainly a possibility, I'd suspect that an installation detail or two was overlooked, and is keeping the system from functioning normally.

With a regular mini-split (one condenser, one evaporator), there's no real way to check the charge- not like a traditional split AC. If it leaks, it needs to be fixed, evacuated and new refrigerant weighed in according to the nameplate and lineset length.

If it was me, I'd review the piping details in the installation manual for your equipment and verify that it is correct. Then I would recover whatever refrigerant is in there and then weigh in new according to the installation manual.

New AC guy out this morning. He had different type of sniffer. Found small leak, repaired and charged both units. Vacuumed down. Very very cold now!

Found issue with stuck in tow/haul. Ended up pulling complete harness (neck n back issues can’t lay under dash very long)
Got harnesses out and compared to new harnesses laid out on 8’x8’ table. Found wire missing doing continuity tests.
although I had done PID tests on all buttons checked fuses all there and good one tiny wire that gave power to just tow/haul button was missing. Hoping this will fix issue...

still searching for cruise control & fans issues. Nice with all wiring laid out in bench.

hardest yet is trying to learn entire wiring...

Looking at your wiring gives me a headache, you are not easily defeated!
Nope! It’s been a huge setback nearly a year now. Few more things to figure out. See new vid update
Looking at your wiring gives me a headache, you are not easily defeated!

Determination and perseverance is overcoming each of your issues.
Still enjoying the updates.
Thanks! Too late to give up now! Total stress but progress. Now adding a few more features & working on solutions for the fans and cruise
It's all in the Canbus I think. Probably a good thing I had the glitch with mode select button as I pulled the harness and learned a SUBSTANTIAL amount studying the book and shop manual CD. I now think I can comfortably say I can take away or add any option to the CANbus and make it work.

Every time I think this thread can’t get any better it just does. Thanks for taking your time to share all of your projects

Thanks much! I was just working on a quickie one-take update video. Shoot it and upload zero edits or re-do's.

Latest uploaded YT vid. Still processing for the HD version.

Just one of those projects would be overwhelming, you are truly a maniac! I've been working on my Stude truck for 6 years with no end in sight and that's just one project.

Most days it's way overwhelming but I keep plugging along>>

Not much exciting going on but decided to build all new harnesses then use current harness just to make another engine run that would not need all the "extra's". Leaning towards making more features for comfort. Since wiring is probably what I have least understanding in and a total weakness it's taking me a while to sort it all out. But, I will keep trying until I get it. ANyone with half a brain could do this in a few minutes but some how some way gotta have it done prior to September 22 as supposed to be get-a-way weekend. The large approved vehicle car show accepting 545 cars on a golf course is that weekend and it's also the wifes b-day that weekend. Since we have already paid out $$ that are non refundable and other expenses I may have to push it the 200 miles if not done in time.

I always set goals but hoping to have it back on road a week from today for the huge cars n coffee on September 4th. Surely not holding my breath on that tho!

Neighbor Shawn is putting it in high gear (not overdrive LOL) on Eco2.7 the 1966 F100 4x4 with 2.7 6R80 combo. We had the cab blasted n ready for primer but removed plastic cover to find the plastic held in all the moisture and it's a absolute mess. Just no room in shop. Trying to get entire sheet metal ready for primer as the very short "painting window" will be here soon. Another long curvy road project but he has acquired a lot of pieces to move forward. The HD 8.8" diff has been shortened 2" each side and just prepping to move to next step. body in primer then move on to doing the chassis work then off for powdercoat.

We had 108 here yesterday and 106 the day before bit higher elevation than phoenix think they had one teens for temp. Much drier out now tho humidity 33% but looks like thunderstorms coming back mid next week.
