Have you got a "wheat pack" for applying the heat to your self? Its a small material tube about 4"accross by about 18" long, half filled with wheat. You put it in the microwave with half a mug of water (or else the wheat burns) for 2 minutes and then simply put it on the spot you have to heat. Works like a charm.

Especially good for your neck. I have no fluid left around the 3 vertebrae in my neck and the muscles get really tight, so 20 minutes with this and I feel great.
Good luck, its a slow process.

SP: thanks a TON for putting up your organizational pictures and comments here and on the Organizing 201 thread. WELL DONE and i'm sure a work in progress.

i've done a lot of what you've shown and picked up a few new ideas.

as far as your shoulder, neck and general body issues one thing that i really believe has helped me is hanging on and inversion table for 5 minutes a day. i used to go to a Shiatsu for 15+ years as my only Dr. for the most part when i was 29-45 years old. then when he stopped working (he was almost 90) i looked for a replacement and since Shiatsu isn't that popular i found the bone crackers (Chiropractors) and found a really good one near me. he would do almost the same adjustment every week or two unlike my Shiatsu that i'd see sometimes every couple months or maybe only once or twice a year. (BTW i never mentioned where my pain was with my Shiatsu and he ALWAYS FOUND IT and fixed it).

then i discover the inversion table and after not seeing the new Chiropractor (BTW i probably went to 5 of them all over our area before settling on this one) for about a month he called me. he wondered how i was doing and i told him i was hanging on my new inversion table. he told me to not hang more than 5 minutes a day because he said it would be hard on my tendons (didn't say which ones specifically). so a year later without seeing him (or taking ADVIL) i asked him if he wanted to go to lunch and he offered a free adjustment after lunch that i passed on. then about a year later he wanted to take me to lunch and get some golf swing tips so that is all i've seen him in 9 years now. i also haven't taken ADVIL for 9 years (neck, knee, back issues come and go now).

i did damage my Achilles Tendon from hanging longer and a few times a day because i really threw my back out lifting and moving some of my heavy vises and stuff about 6 months ago so i'm just starting to hang again. read up on it in the following threads i posted on and i still believe it's the best way to solve some of those issues we all have maybe from a fall or accident in our youth or just the day to day pains.

http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?p=5943683#post5943683

i set my inversion table back up in the living room with a definite look from my bride of 30 years, but as long as i get some of the honey do's done and use it for now it's ok there again and easy to use the timer that i can't hear from the back of the house. (i also don't wear a watch, but i probably could take my cell phone and install an app with a timer, but i won't tell her that because the living room is nice and open for hanging peacefully).

cheers and hope it helps you, but you might want to wait until your shoulder is healed a bit more.

thanks again for posting all the organizing stuff and feel free to put in all of your tips over on the Organizing 201 thread because the new tips are great too especially for recycling which a lot of us would do more if we had a good system.

SP: get the inversion table and find a spot where you can set it up permanently and i don't think you'll regret it one minute.

since you might have time to do some light reading click on Denwood's (Woody's) thread and here's the link.

http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=263351&highlight=woody

Woody's thread and 1/2 Cups might be two of my favorite threads on GJ cause of all the information they put out and maybe most of all their tremendous attitudes.

Woody did a Race deck which might work for you and get on other threads in this section or check out the flooring section that i have yet to read or post on because i put down 4x6x .75 rubber horse mats in mine. if rubber works for you i got mine at one of the local feed places and they have pallets of them you just load up. the workers tend to shy away from helping because each mat weighs about 80 pounds and costs down here are about $40 for each 4x6 footer.

good luck and if you have any questions just post up on your thread and i'll try to keep checking or PM me with your email and i'll email you the answers if i know them or try to help you find them.

cheers and thanks for welcoming me to your thread.

So here's where I go to today.
Got most of my and my dad's stuff sorted. Left with a few coffee cans of spare parts and assorted hardware, but I'm really thinking of just recycling all this stuff because I can\t see myself in my Dad's shoes where he would have to fix something on the car to get to work in the morning and he'd lose or break a bolt and have to go rummaging through cans of assorted used bolts to find something that would work. I did find a coffee can full of double headed nails for concrete form work, and I could definitely use those when I start building forms for the pole shed!

Here's my workbench tonight (this one is on the west wall of the garage) If you go back to page one of this thread and zoom in on some of the pics, you can see how much clutter there has been on this bench. Some of the bins were probably in the same place they were from those original pics.

Here is a stack of some of the boxes and bins that I have emptied and sorted through...
View media item 63199
Here's some of the miscellaneous hardware that I think I may just recycle as I doubt I will ever use this stuff...
View media item 63201View media item 63200
This is where I stack my toolboxes... I still need to go through a lot of stuff on these shelves...

On a final note, here are a couple of annoying things about this garage...
First, the building was moved here, not built on site, and I think the previous owner wanted a taller ceiling which is why the building is set on these 12 inch pony walls, that stick out into the garage by 2 inches. It's impossible to put anything up against the wall creating a perfect space behind the bench to lose things.
View media item 63208
Secondly, the floor...
View media item 63197View media item 63198
I'm convinced the previous own just covered the floor with used motor oil. When I moved in here I used a 5 gallon pail of heavy duty degreaser to try to clean the floor. No joy. I would love to finish the floor with some epoxy but I doubt it would stick to this. Any thoughts on this?

Thanks for your input!
Cheers!

Slim, great work so far...

A big thank you to drives for the compliments as well:thumbup:

My floors are not that dissimilar to yours and I only have myself to blame.:shocking:

The floors in the Shed Downunder are on the bucket list down the track and I am looking with interest to see how other members tackle the issue..

Regards

I may not post much in many topics but I do follow many here. Being a Mod you would be surprised some times why you end up reading so many topics. A weird post by a scammer often take you back to read more later after you see something interesting.

I have seen similar power boards but the way you set that up is very clever.

I also note it has 12 outlets so I wonder how often it trips the circuit breaker ? :dunno: As for the lights on the same circuit that must be a pain at times.

That reminds me I have a light in my pit on the power circuit and it has failed.
Possibly the fact it is poor quality from China as it failed almost a week after it was installed and has done the same again. These things I think are meant to test us.:eek:

SP: you might put in a couple of those push button battery operated lights in case the power goes out so at least you don't hurt yourself walking to the breaker box or outside. i've had a couple in our garage and i think they are still there, but I should test them to see if the batteries are still good. we also have some lights that sit in sockets on the wall inside our house so if power goes out (it used to about every winter for a few hours or a day or two until they finally cut a bunch of trees down that were the problem). anyway the lights are easily found and pull out and are nice little flash lights. i'll get you a few pictures if you ask and the brand names too or ask my bride where she bought them.

i was more concerned about getting things put away and ORGANIZED before doing the lighting and wiring for my power so i have that to look forward to also, but my little garage is about the size of your workbench so it might not be to bad.

hope your shoulder is healing nicely. is it?

cheers and enjoy your Friday and hope you have something fun planned for the weekend.

For a single person workshop, generally, I'm the only one in there at a time, so I can't use more than one tool ... except maybe a vac and a sander, but so far it hasn't caused a problem.

"... to test us" is an understatement!

Do you have pics of your pit on your thread? Sorry to say I haven't looked through your thread as its a long read, but if you have some pics of you pit I be interested to see them. My dad had a pit in his garage. I dug a pit in my previous garage, and I'm thinking of putting one in the Pole shed when I get around to finishing it.

Cheers!

Yes an understatement for sure and yes you will see some photos of the Pit in the Sheddwellers topic.

You're pit is very cool with the cellar off to the side -- almost like a hidden lair! When you say cellar tho, I'm thinking vegetables? :headscrat But that would seem like an odd place to put a vegetable cellar.... I'll have to keep reading.

Hidden yes so please do not tell every one will you. ;)
When we say Cellar think 'Wine Cellar'. :)
Mind you I do have many other things in storage down there.

Me too. I guess the pit never got built. I kinda wondered about that whole deal. I mean the little pit under the car looks handy, but the whole end of the shop? What would you have down there?

The only time I have seen that was at an alignment shop. They had about 6 sets of ramps that extended out into the lower area with alignment pads on each. All the tool boxes were down at that level. Very comfortable set up for them.

Engine update... Need help!

Well I started dismantling one of the Kohler engines today. Good news: they weren't seized up. Bad news there's some scoring and pitting on the cylinder walls.

How do I determine if this is too bad to fix? Can I check this myself or does it need to be stripped down and taken to a machine shop?

This engine has seen better days...

Lots of carbon inside the cylinder, and visible oil leakage...
View media item 63348
Pitting looks pretty bad...
View media item 63349View media item 63350
And definite scoring on the other cylinder as well as the same kind of pitting.

Valves appear to be in pretty good condition tho!

I don't have a dial caliper to check the bore -- on my "next tools to buy list" -- but I was planning to borrow one from my friend.

The service manual says I can go up to .030 oversize pistons (assuming I can find them) but I suspect that these may already be oversize pistons.

If they are too far oversize, then I think this block may not be worth the trouble of re-sleeving the cylinders.

Any tips would be appreciated!

Cheers!

Slim, you certainly have some choices to make at this point, every thing is fixable but its a matter of just how far you go and what you want to spend on them.
Can you get something that will replace them or buy new??

Regards

Your secret is safe with me!!! :Twitch::Twitch:

 ;) Good to know.

Other things eh? (Only Canadians can use the word "eh", eh!) :canada::canadian::thumbup:
But what kind of "other things"???? I have a good imagination that goes to the dark side pretty easily!!!

Some time back I posted a photo of a telephone and computer cable so you know it is just storage stuff. You will have to read more of sheddwellers to learn more.

That engine swap looks like it was fun.

Now you have me worried....
I have a small Kanga (mini track steer) that was originally a 16hp Honda which had major failure 3 times, so I fitted a 25hp Kohler and it has been going great for 3 years now. We use it for trenching in irrigation lines.
