SP: great job on the write up and spiffing up of your plane. i'll make a note of it once i start making time to spiff up a few of mine. i do like the feel of planing wood by hand, but i've got a Jet 6 inch power planer, a Dewalt 12 inch power planer, 4 hand planers (3 Makitas and 1 Craftsman) so getting to use my hand planers might have to wait until i get a bit older and have more time. speaking of getting older that is why i started the weight loss thread that turned into the GET HEALTHY thread.

you don't have to read anything just to start posting and i'm sure you'll catch up just fine. there is only a few of us that have posted weekly or more often on it since i started it on July 2015 and you can see how many members are in the group or have been in the group on Post #13 & #14 of that thread. my weight loss or limited weight loss and better eating weekly weigh ins are on post #12 and lately i've been eating not so great, but overall i'm doing a lot better than i was in March 2015 when i weighed around 250 and i now weigh around 220. not asking you to join if you want to or need to lose a few pounds just like your sense of humor and you might learn something that will help you live a bit longer.

take care and post up the process of the little one too if you have time since it's a bit different and i might have 10 or so of those. i'll probably spiff up a few and give some to my kids and grandkids as i get time and i'm sure they will say WHAT'S THIS GRANDPA??

cheers and hope you are having a great weekend.

Thanks for all the info on the plane. I've copied it out to a Word document, and, if it's alright with you, over the next couple of days I'm going to edit it into the "Plane Restoration Instructions Manual" by Slim, from over yonder in C-Eh-N-Eh-D-Eh!.... Just for my own use - of course.

Just had a read through your thread finally SP. Lots going on even with the extended time frame.

Your gates and wall look pretty awesome. I can't imagine having to go 10' deep for footings that's a lot of work.

Really like the shed. Actually all of them.

I've just been working on a French cleat wall in my garage. It might be an option in the detached garage to hang things above where you have that 2" kick out maybe :dunno:

Cheers GB

Nice work on the plane. Interesting plate under the frog (they do look a little like a frog). Could it have been to avoid bottoming out the mounting screws? My first thought was he was trying to close up the throat. That is what the frog adjusting screws should be for. Move the frog forward or up and the throat tightens. A narrow throat helps avoid chatter. Generally the slot in the blade allows plenty of blade adjustment prior to clamping the cap iron to it, and the cap iron is what gets adjusted. Maybe he had to replace the cap iron and the new one was too long.

Anyway, great job! And don't discount your block plane. The shallow angle for cutting end grain works great if adjusted properly. And sharp. And they can be a PITA to get adjusted. Maybe I should say I don't know how to adjust them. 1/2's block plane with the adjusting screw is supposed to be easier but I have trouble with them too. Just the block planes, i don't have issues with the other planes (but I'll confess, I never got too good at adjusting wooden planes). I have some cheapy block planes (formed sheet metal body) that work surprisingly well. Yours look like a good quality plane.

Try to stay on a level plane! Keep it plain and simple. Just the plane truth, folks. I've heard of "air guitar" and "airplane" and "air lock", are they similar?

SP: i still think your gate is one of the best ones i've seen here or anywhere so you deserve another WELL DONE SIR!!

also i remembered there was a hand plane thread in vintage tools that i just posted on to bring it to the top where you might see that there are some SERIOUS COLLECTORS that are members here, but you can still post a before and after picture of yours if you have time.

here's the link:

http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?p=6039147#post6039147

do you still have snow? we are going to get a mini TYPHOON going through our area in the next couple days so hopefully we won't lose power cause i sold my generator (didn't need it the last 5 years or so). they are comparing it to a storm i remember we had when i was 6 on Thanksgiving in 1962 if that gives you some idea how bad they think it might be. i'm not in a flood zone, but after looking at what Matthew did to Florida and the East Coast it seems like anywhere those big winds come through with a lot of rain there is trouble.

cheers

SP: storm predictions didn't quite hit my area so we didn't get the 70 mph winds that the guys and gals got out on the coast. we have had more than our fair share of rain, but as you might know we always say it rains here to keep the tourists out. it really has been raining hard though.

so what have you been up to this week? are you fully 100% recovered from your shoulder surgery and going 100mph at work and no time for GJ or the shop?

snow still hanging around and any new to report or show pictures of? i don't think we had snow last year, but we might have. i do remember it being 60 degrees in January when some years it would be June before we'd get weather that warm.

cheers

Slim: you OK? sorry to bug you, but i for one miss your good humor and wisdom sharing. hope everything is going well and maybe you are just catching up now that your shoulder maybe isn't in a sling.

also wanted to let you know about a new thread you might like. feel free to take a peak at it and maybe post up your wood plane restoration as one contribution.

here's the link to make it easier for you:

SP: i did see your post over on 1/2's thread and thanks for letting me know that i needed to change the link to the Woodworking 101 thread instead of leaving the one i had for Safety 101 that was there before.

70 degrees after snow sounds like you are in Denver, CO. or Bend, OR. where if you don't like the weather you just wait 5 or 10 minutes.

sorry to hear your shoulder still has some pain. after my shoulder surgery i was told not to do anything for 6 weeks, then worked out with rubber bands and 1,2 and 3 pound weights for a month just getting movement and 4 months after surgery i was hitting golf balls 400 yards. mine hasn't hurt since November 2003, but for 25 years prior to that i'd tear my left shoulder's rotator cuff every year or too and deal with the pain or take lots of ADVIL.

best of luck with the shoulder and if Doctor says it's ok get a few bands or something like this where you can work out with one or put on the entire set of them as you get stronger. also maybe buy a pair of www.ironmaster.com dumbbells or powerblocks or a set of steel or rubber hex dumbbells and make all the muscles stronger around your ailing shoulder.

cheers and i do miss your humor so hope you are able to find more time to stop in here cause this site is my favorite.

Thought you might be interested in this discussion of hand plane tuning. It really is worth reading.

https://virginiatoolworks.com/2012/06/09/setting-up-and-tuning-a-hand-plane/

Don't be shy about what you post; lots of collectors have tools they never use and may not even know how to use them. People learn a lot more seeing someone take apart and restore one item than seeing a hundred on a shelf. The sheet metal in your plane was interesting, and it the kind of thing you run into and need to figure out why it is there.

Thanks for posting!

Slim: after my shoulder surgery at end of November 2003 i did NOTHING for a month then since i had the SEATTLE MARINERS Dr. do my surgery he sent me to the current SEATTLE MARINERS trainer. for 2 months i only worked out with weights up to maybe 5 pounds, but mostly the bands. i worked out more with those bands trying to get healthy cause i had a goal to go on the long drive golf tour in 2004 and their qualifying school was April 3rd, 2004.

after all the band workouts and hitting golf balls with my right hand only (left shoulder was the one i had issues with that was operated on) i was cleared to hit golf balls with both hands on Feb. 15, 2004. i still used the bands all that year and at Q school in April 2004 i missed winning the event by a yard in Dallas in the final round (we hit balls all day and about 50 players from all over the world). i hit one of my drives in my final round 386 and 387 won and the guys out at the end of the range said my final drive hit the 370 sign on the fly so would have easily been enough to win if in the fairway, but it was OB.

what i'm trying to say is you don't need to lift heavy to repair the small muscles around the bigger muscles. using bands will work out both sides equally and work on full extension even if only doing isometrics without any weights. feel free to email me or PM me if you need some ideas. BTW i was 48 when i had my shoulder surgery and i think i originally tore my rotator cuff in my left shoulder when i was 22. it hasn't hurt again since my operation 13 years ago either so hoping yours heals up too.

also welcome back and while i've thought about not reading or posting on GJ many many times so i could get more done i know i'd miss it so hopefully you'll make time to post cause you keep us smiling (a lot) when you do.

I wish you and yours a very Merry Christmas, and a Happy Shed type New Year. (Oh and thanks for all the plane tips - I'm looking for a project to put them into use).

Have a safe, if cold, time.

Lyndon
It's a long way from cold here !!!! But that's what this :beer2: is for I guess. :hellobye:

After seeing you post in others threads I decided to come check out yours. It had its highs and lows, its laughs and cries, but all in all it was a very enjoyable read. And on that gate/entryway.:bowdown::bowdown:
Just spectacular, made me want to tackle something like that someday...

Some days you have to wonder about that ... thus the old saying "Work would be a blast if it wasn't for the clients/customers!" They pay the bills but can be a pain in the ars-enal.

My sweet wife says "they do call it work!"

I think looking after cattle and watching them toss hay on their back when they're happy, bending wires, clocking screws and making brooms would be easier! :wtf:

So, duh, why do you think I'm feeding cows, bending wire, and making brooms? It works for me! WTF - Wow That's Fun!

Got yer pipes polished yet? All ya need is a buffing wheel to fit in a Dewalt drill! ... that is when you can find it!

I've been thinking about doing a little PPP, Power Pipe Polishing. Misplacement drill issue solved, I bought more of them:rocker:

Thanks for stopping by. btw - I get dizzy seeing all the stuff you accomplish in a day! Love the pic of you puttin on the boogie woogie shoes in the whatever you call that dance class! :pimpflash :deathmeta :lol2::lol2: I'd be too embarrassed to go there! :lol_hitti

It's Zumba, and, yes, it takes a little self confidence to do it in front of a bunch of women you don't know. So I try to make them laugh. My favorite line is when there's a new girl, about halfway through I turn around (I try to stand in the front row because no women want you standing behind them) and say something like "this showing off is wearing me out". Gets a laugh out of the new ones and a groan out of the regulars. Works for me. They think I can't be embarrassed and I just tell them they don't know how. If I'm outworking the class (rarely the teacher) I like to say "I may be old but I'm slow" (unsaid is but I'm still faster than you)

Keep it up!

SP I have enjoyed your thread and the information and pics that you have posted. Liked what you have done with you gate and intend to read again the posts that you made on refinishing the plane and the link that OIF (Andy) added. I think that it is great that she gave you the mandolin that he had not finished. Several years ago I started making guitars as a hobby with no previous woodworking experience. I am sure that you can do it with your background.

Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year

SP: i'm not sure how well you knew your old neighbor that just passed, but sorry to hear he did just the same. as far as keeping an unfinished mandolin on your wall i'd say sure if you have the space not only to remember him, but to also remind you there are always projects to do so you'll never get bored.

here's to us surviving another year above dirt and hoping to do the same in 2017 while spreading a bit of wisdom, happiness and learning a bit too.

cheer (ice tea for this guy mostly)

Slimpickins, when you posted on my thread, I thought I had your thread on my subscribed list. Obviously I didn't but now it is.

I have enjoyed catching up and it was great to see your father's hardware collection (I have the other half). It's still hard for me to throw away "slightly" rusted screws but tossed most of the bent nails last year. I admire your organization of all the tool boxes by task type and your bins. I tried sorting the smaller batches of hardware but I don't think I will live long enough to get it all done.

I love the block work at the entrance to your property but I think 70 pounds per block would limit me to a one block high wall. I was pretty much worn out stacking the little ones five or six high with no footings.
