Have a good trip Slim. Glad to see you back. I was worried the you were buried under feet of snow and we were going to have to wait until August before you were heard from.

SP: your job doesn't seem so bad if you get to work at a SKI RESORT for a couple weeks. just hoping that doesn't entail working with bare hands in the snow in freezing temps cause that sounds like WORK.

best of luck on your trip and a safe flight home.

well I over estimated a bit cause cause according to GJ i'm only subscribed to 3848 threads, but some i'm sure i've unsubscribed to for lack of interest in the thread or maybe the member is no longer here for one reason or another. i do like this place and still trying to find my way around.

hope to see more of your posts as you maybe don't have the garage or home's chores calling you when you have a free minute.

cheers

Andy: we've owned at least 4 TORTOISE SHELL CALICO cats and they were all females so i GOOGLED and Wikipedia mentions the genes to create the colors is only in the females so you might be on to something. all our cats have TORTI-TUDE, but all very loyal to the person feeding them. out of all the cats we've owned when Mirry passed in my arms a couple years ago i did have more than a few tears and still miss her laying under my chin while i'm sitting in my recliner. (sorry no Mirry pictures in this laptop to post)

SP: i don't know if you are posting on other threads, but i haven't seen any skiing pictures or snow bunnies or good words printed on your thread so hoping you have some to post and just letting you know I (we) care.

cheers

SP. when I went to SLC I stayed at a friends place in Springville just south of Provo. He has a 2 story underground house. It was so nice to meet him and his lovely wife and spend the night in his house. Enjoy.

Slim: sorry for the late smoke signal, but all is well in my world and just took a little break from GJ. your turn to update your thread or at least inject some of those skills and special humor on others threads cause there are a lot of guys here on GJ that enjoy your posts besides me.

cheers

Slim: i'm pretty sure the rest of GJ is missing your posts so since it's now snowing here i'm guessing it might be winter in your area so how about a few posts letting us know you are OK?

Slim: thanks for the smoke signal and please don't make yourself a stranger now that it's cold weather season again. ok?

so you mentioned your nose is smaller and maybe hurts a bit, but curious how the shoulder is. are you 100% or still trying to get there after your surgery a while back?

hope all is well with you and your family and if you might need to warm up i was just in Los Angeles last week and it was 90 degrees so maybe a trip to the PARTY GARAGE might be on your agenda this winter cause the hosts are amazing.

Slim: nice to see you posting on GJ again cause I (we) really miss your AWESOME SENSE OF HUMOR or just a few good words if you don't feel funny that day or minute works ok too.

thanks for the nice PM and well wishes and I'd like to wish you and yours a very MERRY CHRISTMAS and a great 2018.

i'm guessing with those weather reports you were posting that you are having a White Christmas. yes? I don't think snow was even predicted around here yesterday in Seattle and we had about 4 inches drop on us last night that made for a lot of fun for the grandkids. their parents usually stay until well after midnight on Christmas eve, but with the roads getting icy they all went home at 11pm so it's very peaceful here this morning.

cheers and i'll try to dig up some cool STEAMPUNK pics i've saved or see for you if you want to get a bit creative with your new hobby and old plumbing parts. here's a couple things i've saved that i thought were decent.

As this is my first attempt at a Steampunk lamp, I will be experimenting to try to get the nice looking finish shown on the Machine Age lamp that was my inspiration. I will also need to be careful not to get too many pipe wrench teeth marks on the pipes that will be hard to remove or file off. Quite a few unknowns here for me. Thanks for stopping by!

Good Luck. I am sure with some care all of the lamp will look great.

Slim: i'd love one of those old steel balls with the world cut out on it to use as a fire pit. The guy that makes them was asking me if i knew where to get more of those steel balls a few years ago and if i could have found one he would have made me one. sadly i wasn't able to find them.

another option my be to cut up an OLD above ground or buried oil tank since those are getting scraped quite a bit, but not sure if you guys had oil for heat in your area.

with all that cold weather you are getting are you staying inside as much as possible or what kind of clothes do you wear when it's that cold? when it's around freezing temps or even below 45 degrees here i wear long johns and a few layers, but not sure that would be warm enough when -40 or is it?

cheers and here's to a great 2018!!

Slim, I also recall having to change the oil to a lower viscosity when the temperature dropped to double-digit below zero. With a good battery my Triumph Herald would barely turn over in -30* weather. The transmission and differential gear oil also made it hard for the little 4-banger to move the car for the first mile or two. I also carried a selection of cardboard radiator covers to help keep the coolant warm enough to allow the defroster (and heater) to work. At 30 below the the "whole radiator" cardboard came out.

Slim thanks for the reminders. It is easy to forget the challenges that others face and how the over come them.

Just when I thought your fingers had frozen off you're back!:rocker:

Great dissertation on cool weather. I worked on Alaska's North Slope but it was all like inside a plant. Company provided everything including hunting down your truck to refuel it once per day with naphtha. Two sides to the field back then, east side was ARCO and they built pipelines off gravel roads in the summer. West side was SOHIO and they built pipelines off ice roads in the winter. I was on the west side work so we pretty much started in January when it started to get light and work until the ice roads were melting. We had nice cold weather gear and of course plugins if you shut your truck down, which most people didn't. They had low oil pressure kill switches you had to override to start up. I think most every truck got two or three new windshields every year due to rocks flying from big trucks.

Different than being on your own, but thanks for the memories.

Why do I hate steam punk? I love it, but lots of time good antique parts are destroyed to make it. I tell myself they were on the way to the scrap yard anyway.

Not sure on the galvanizing, but if you had black iron pipe you can warm it up (600C maybe) and brush it with a brass brush and get a great brushed on brass patina. Probably easier to paint it black, then paint it bronze or copper and try to wipe it off with rags.

Very good looking lamp you've made. New lubricators with the clear cup aren't too expensive, by the way.

Glad you're back!!
