Slim: remind me (and maybe us) is this an investment property or your new place to hang your hat?

I love the hot water heating system and your work leveling and plumbing up this old house is a job you have taken on head on and looking better every time I check in on you.

not that your area prices are close to what we’d pay I’m curious how much your masonry work cost?

Getting warmer in your part of the world yet?

We had a litter of foxes nest across the street. So cute! (We live on a rural dirt road) Ours were patchy with their fur. I’m used to seeing solid color red foxes around here so these ones look like mutts!

Sorry I didn’t see this to comment on this earlier but here’s my 2 cents. I’ve done a fair amount of planing cedar (soft wood) both with hand 3.25 inch wide hand planets and my 13 inch Dewalt DW735 planer. The blades on these are easy to change but I think if I was to upgrade I would buy a new Dewalt planer and buy a spiral (helical) cutter cause changing out or moving the small carbide cutters would be even easier. AND if I was to do a lot of planing of hardwoods I think the cuts would be better. With my Dewalt I can plane boards up to 12 inches wide and 6 inches thick. It’s also fairly easy to move around and runs on 120 volts.

I was thinking of upgrading to a nice old used 15 inch Grizzly brand and upgrading to the helical carbide cutters but since I don’t have my wood shop built moving it (about 600 pounds) and getting 220 power to the back of my home was an issue.

If you can do about 80-90% of your wood planing with this smaller 12 inch wide planer I think a new one is about $600 US and the helical cutter an additional $400 or in that range so a bit spender than your $1000 CDN but you’d have a new machine and not a project. OR use the 3 cutting blades that come with your new planer and flip them and use before buying replacements or the upgrade to spiral or helical.

Then if you need to plane bigger boards by hand is an option or find a local guy with a bigger planer you can pay or trade services to get those boards finished.

I probably would have passed on that old planer too cause it’s been neglected and who knows what you’d need to get it back to working correctly.

$1000 in scrap is pretty funny!! I doubt any of us own a truck big enough to haul a $1000 in scrap much less that many tons of steel.

I’m guessing you had electrical (power) company shut off the juice (electricity) or did you just pull your meter? Or did you just work with hot wires? Great job cleaning up that huge mess and I hope you got things all back together correctly.

Wow that’s a ton of work.

Well done sir!!

Even with the rust you have on that truck, I'd say it's pretty good for an almost 40 year old (wtf did the time go???) truck. If that was here in Ontario it would have fallen apart years ago from rust. I like living where we get decent winters but I hate the road salt. Anything that doesn't get undercoated yearly won't see a 20th birthday. I even have a 2003 Chevy project vehicle sitting in my shop with a frame that is rotted through that can attest to this.

@slimpickins, I am no expert or professional mechanic so take this for what it's worth (a little less than 2¢).

For me, replacing that pinion yoke is a no-brainer. You've put the time and effort into disassembling the rear end this far so installing a new part should fix the problem forever.

Even if you spend the time to smooth the groove, the sealing surface is going to be quite a bit smaller than intended for the stock seal. You might be able to find a seal for a smaller pinion yoke but it likely will still leak.

Without 'restoring' the truck, keeping it alive seems like a better deal than scrapping or selling it. If you plan to sell the truck (considering the current market for used vehicles), do what everyone else does and re-assemble it and truthfully tell the buyer you just put in a new seal.

You could install the seal proud of it's normal location so the lip of the seal rides just in front of the groove. There's a good chance the seal would work but might leak around the edges of the metal part.

I’ve got more than a few posts to read and catch up on but wanted to give you and your hardwood (or softwood) floor refinished cause that room really does have a shine now. Shri thanks gir the reminders to put unions on my gas pipe extensions I know I’ll be making next summer for BBQ and outdoor heaters.

Which day is Canadian Thanksgiving? Hope you and your family enjoyed it!!

OMG I’m so happy you mentioned needle scaler cause I’ve hit way too many projects that could use that instead of other methods I could use. Yep I don’t own a sandblast cabinet either.

I wish I lived closer cause I’d help you move that radiator so you wouldn’t need so many of your friends. Some of my vises weigh about that much.

Have a great weekend.

I hear you on an awkward move with the radiated and if you haven’t thrown away or burned the jig your friend made to move it up the stairs I for one would love a picture of it. Thanks s as gain for the needle scaler mention snd any brand better than others cause I watched a YT vid and he said he tried a harbor freight one that broke immediately?
