2 Post lift comparison (Atlas vs. Derek Weaver)

I'm comparing two lifts at the moment and couldn't find much info on one of them so I figured I would post.

Info: Garage is 24x30x9 but has a section that is 11' above where the lift will go. I know it's less than ideal but it's just for me personally and my family has all small cars.

Because most overhead lifts are 12' I'm going with a baseplate lift. The two I'm comparing are the Atlas BP8000 from Greg Smith and the Derek Weaver W-9f. Cost wise they're equal and I've read good things about both. There are a lot more threads about the BP8000 though so I'm wondering if I should go with that? Honestly the only reason I'm considering the Derek Weaver is because it's red... I don't know which is better or if they're even any different.

Any suggestions or possibly even a different lift I haven't seen? My one requirement is that the lock release be single point on the column with the power unit.

There very similar. The Derek weaver is just a 9000lb lift. There both made by same company but just renamed. There made by peak lift. The bp8000 is the peak 209, the Derek weaver is a peak 209x. I've talked to the manufacturer and they confirmed this, and also sent me the ce certification.

Thanks for that info! I just placed my order for the Derek Weaver lift. I tested my concrete last night - I had a 5 inch bit and it was still drilling when it bottomed out so I was glad I don't have to repour! They say 3-4 days shipping so I'll keep this thread updated with my thoughts.

I ordered the lift late on Thursday, it shipped around 4pm on Friday. Derek Weaver says expect 3-4 days shipping time based on where I live. I didn't expect that to count weekend days. I checked the tracker this morning and it said out for delivery. I had it delivered to a local business I'm friends with that has a forklift. I just picked it up and dropped it off at my house. Everything looks good, there is a scuff on one of the posts from transit but it's not too bad. I'm not going to worry about it.

You're going to love it I have the bp8000 baseplate model and it doesn't bother me having a base plate at all. It sure is better than the maxjax I wish I would have went with that in the first place

Thanks! I'm sure I'm going to love it, would've loved having an overhead but I don't quite have the ceiling height. (even with it up into the trusses)

Once I got it unwrapped there were some decent scratches in both columns but I'm probably going to put stickers over it anyways.

It took me longer to unload it from the trailer than to actually put together. I unloaded it by myself with some blocks of wood, a few jack stands and a 3 ton jack. Took forever. Get a couple buddies and/or an engine hoist.

Had a friend come over to help stand them up, from there it took probably 3 hours to get them drilled, leveled, torqued, and all the cabling/hoses ran.

After work today I'll run power to the motor and get hydraulic oil. I've seen around here before people putting shutoff switches on the post, should I do that? Also any input on AW-32 vs AW-46?

Also, you'll see in the pictures it is for sure a Peak Lift.

Looks good, nice install.

I'll get more height when I get time to wreck out the ceiling. Got too many other race car things going on to work on that deal. That's a "when you're not fixing anything else" project LOL.

I hear you there! Once I get around to opening up the one truss above the lift I'll have 11.5 feet clear above the lift which should be plenty at the moment. Someday I might raise the whole roof. Maybe. Probably not..

I finished the install on Wednesday! Total time spent: 4 hours unloading, 4 hours installing. Honestly though if I would've waited to unload until my buddy came over it probably would've only taken an hour. As expected, the instructions **** but if you're competent in problem solving you'll have no problem figuring it out. I lifted my first vehicle, a 2003 Blazer 4DR 4x4. No problems! I'll update in a month or two with some usage thoughts. I need 27 more inches of height to be able to walk under the blazer so once I modify the trusses I'll get that!

I just bought the Peak 209x and i am in the middle of installing it, just need to run the cables and hydro lines and wire it up, my question is it doesn't seem to have multiple locking points all the way up like i am use to with a lift, it has the single point relase lever which i stil have to run the cable for, but i just dont see mutilple stops like i thought i would.Maybe im missing something.:headscrat

Thanks

How's it been working for you? Has the floor plate been an issue? Any thoughts about asymmetrical vs symmetrical?

Not the OP but the floor plate hasn't been any kind of issue for me. I've had the F350 on the lift, both race cars and the Fusion - all way different in lift points and configurations, no problems. The hardest to get up with the Fusion because they really do not have any jack points - pinch weld type lift. I used the medium height round posts that came with the lift and picked it up next to the pinch welds. It went up just fine, was very stable.

Just stumbled back on this thread and wanted to answer the questions and give an update.

As far as the baseplate being in the way, I mean it's no big deal. Obviously if you have the height get an overhead but I really don't mind having it.

The lift I bought is 'super-symetric' meaning that the car can be loaded dead even front to back or loaded with more hanging off the back. I generally load it with the mirrors about even with the column.

I've had probably 6-7 different cars/trucks on the lift and have had no problem with any of them. Smallest being an 08 civic and largest being an 01 chevy 2500hd.

The stops on the locking mechanism are in the back side of the carriage. The locks click every 2-3 inches I'd guess. I love having the single point lock release.

I still haven't messed with the ceiling so I'm right now at 9'3" ceiling height which doesn't allow me to stand under any car but my harbor freight 20 gallon oil drain works just fine under all that I've changed the oil on. Also, It's not near as bad as people make it out to be to work on a rolling stool. I don't mind it at all.
