I finished up another smaller side project this weekend as well. A refinished cabinet to mount over my work bench. I had a really crude shelf on the wall that was only supposed to be temporary but then became long term. Well it finally had to go and, I had this not too deep small parts cabinet. It was originally a brake parts cabinet and I would have preferred to save the original paint but the logo was ruined with some surface rust and it was just shabby enough that I decided to sand it and repaint. The blue and white paint colors are true to the original theme and I mounted that on the wall and added a couple vintage racing stickers to give it some garage character. Now a much more useful place to store small parts and tools that I would use often but I much prefer being able to close the door and keep things out of sight.
Still slowly choosing what should be stored inside but it should help organization a little and looks better than the crappy old shelf.

Don't forget the wood shop area in my basement!!

Ok, enough rubbing it in. I'll be jealous of you come winter time when my pole barn is frozen and I'm going nuts while waiting for the spring thaw. All the while you will be out on short and a t-shirt working on projects.

Maybe get some heat in there for next year but right now the goal is to just get it built and usable before weather turns cold here.

Hopefully they start construction next week.

Thanks, as I keep finishing one listed task on the hot rod work list I find two new ones that go on the mental list. I guess it will be a never ending labor of love making small things better over time.

I love it…..

When I come home from work and there are boxes on the front porch with shiny new parts inside.

Got a couple new items today and put them on the hot rod. A rear view mirror and a 1929 style hand operated wiper. Not that I plan to drive in the rain but it's mostly for appearance sake and to make sure no one from law enforcement hassles me in the future.

Also got it off the wheel dollies, filled the tires properly, backed it out of the garage for the first time this year, gave it a quick hand wash and went for a short maiden voyage around the block.

New barn update…..

All the other materials arrived yesterday, namely the trusses and 16 bags of cement for the post foundations.
The builder will hopefully start construction next Monday or Tuesday. Now I'm getting excited.

Ain't that the truth. there will always be something to fix or improve. Since I'm using an antique plate I had to mail in the application and still waiting on the state to make it legal to drive.
Hopefully the foundation holes get dug tomorrow and the cement poured for the posts.

I didn't know that fact. The Michigan law for a historic vehicle is a little gray and I could claim the wiper didn't come standard and therefore is not required. But, I figured for the relatively low cost it was easy to add.

Building the new garage begins…….

The new garage build has begun!
The crew started this morning by laying out the location for post holes.

Then most of the day was spent boring holes and moving lumber from the front yard into the back yard. The hole digging started out ok but unfortunately slowed right down when the smaller power auger could not eat through what proved to be some very hard packed sand/clay mixture. I've always known my property sat on sand, gravel and some clay mixed in. This part of the yard is virgin and has never been disturbed. The sandy soil was so fine (like flour) and packed so hard the auger bit could not cut through. So some holes are done and some started and the crew will be back tomorrow with a bigger machine with more power and better boring bit to get down to the required 42 inch depth.

Roadster Update…

Unfortunately I've had to cancel plans to drive the roadster down at Dream Cruise this week. Just too much yet to do to make sure it is reliable and I'm still awaiting legal plate registration from the state. Too much going on in life right now to get it all done in only a couple days and I'm not trying to produce another cable TV car build show with unrealistic deadlines. I actually do need sleep and food and oh ya, my day job.

So the details yet to accomplish on the car will proceed at a more normal pace and I will get to put some local miles on it this summer yet while gaining confidence to drive it more and more in the future.

Meanwhile if you are on Woodward this Wednesday evening I'll be there in my 2000 Mustang GT convertible. See you at the stop light

Thanks for stopping by here Don. Wiring it not my favorite thing either but I will admit that using the harness from Speedway Motors made it fairly simple as everything is well labeled. It's just a slow and tedious process.
But everything seems to work and I didn't "let the smoke out" of any module or wire.

Garage Build Update……

After the first light duty auger would not do the job they brought in something with more power yesterday and I now have multiple holes in my back yard awaiting inspection. We found no bones or gold, did not strike oil and did not break through to the HF main headquarters but at least we have 42" deep holes everywhere needed. Hopefully cement gets put in today after inspection and then tomorrow starts the building process in earnest.

Well after getting the post holes dug and inspected and then cement mixed in the bottom of each hole I was hoping for a big day on Thursday but nature had other ideas. It turned out to be a rainy day all day and no construction happened.
So Friday clears up and the crew was able to return to work and get a lot accomplished.
The day starts with getting all posts into the ground and also digging out the sod and topsoil for the floor area.

After getting the posts up straight the grade boards started going on. and it looks like I'll have enough left over dirt to back fill when done. This should avoid any additional cost to bring in dirt.

Up goes the beginning of the main beams that will support trusses and the side wall girts.

And that's where the day finished with the long side walls mostly done, the main floor cleared of sod and one side trenched for the rat wall. Then I got my first look through what will be the twin garage doors.

I'm starting to get excited.

That's what I wondered too when they first started. Then I saw one guy going from post to post and dropping something blue into each hole and next time I looked it was like straight up magic had happened!!!

New Garage Update…..

Today started out hot and humid but the crew made progress by getting all the truss support beams finished and adding temporary braces to the walls and then starting the task of raising trusses in place.

A brief solar eclipse break after lunch time to try out my NASA approved box viewer. We could see some of it between the clouds today.

Then continued truss installation.

While I was off buying more 2 x 4's they finished off the trusses and put up temporary bracing for the night. I came home from the lumber yard to this.

It's starting to look more like the real thing now.
Raining tonight and I hope it quits by morning so we don't lose another build day to rain tomorrow.

New Garage Build Update…..

Yesterday the finished up pretty much all the framing save for a few braces and the service door which is going in today and hopefully some of the steel.

to finally this and ready for a roof.

The floor received two loads of sand and a bunch of shoveling and spreading to make it level for compacting. The compacting is going on this morning and inspection is called for. Hoping to pour cement either this afternoon or tomorrow.

At the end of a full day it looks like this now.

A pretty good pace. We've had some rain delays mixed in the schedule but work has mostly been steady. I was hoping to be completely done by today but looks more like next week now. I had to order a few more pieces of trim.

New Garage Build Update….

Yesterdays progress included getting the compaction sign off from the county. getting trim installed on one side and all the side walls installed along with framing in and installing the side door. Some of the cement forms are done and the approach area was brought up to the needed grade level.

Today we pour cement and see what else can be accomplished.

Friday Garage Build Progress…

Today was a big day as the cement floor was poured. We had to carefully thread the front yard needle with two big cement trucks. After removing one dead bush and trimming a number of tree branches I was able to make a path from the road through the front yard that did not run over the top of my septic field. Those truck drivers did a fantastic job and use surgical like precision when they move the truck and the cement shute around during the pour. Once the barn was filled I watched in awe as a very experienced and talented cement artist carefully worked the surface to make it very smooth and flat. I learned a lot about cement work just watching this 65 year old guy out work the younger kids.

The finished floor now curing overnight. Hopefully the local deer will not come and leave their little hoof prints for me.

Once the cement work was done the crew was able to use the afternoon to also get most of the roof panels on.

The crew worked 1/2 day today and got the back wall siding cut and put up along with the soffit material in the rear wall overhang.

Garage Dreaming….

I'm already mentally picturing where things will go. Let's see, left back corner maybe some storage shelves for parts, along the left side are two future project vehicles, back wall has engines for future use and a work bench. Right side different machines and at least one other bench. Maybe some storage cabinets along either side walls. The right side gets a vehicle lift.
Yikes I'm playing garage tetris already in my mind.

Saturday work on the roadster…

While the construction crew was working in the back yard I spent some quality garage time with the roadster today. My test drive last weekend revealed some wiring still too close to a header so I re-routed that and added a heat shield wrap around it too.
Also installed the seat belts today to scratch that task off my To-Do list.

The work list is getting mostly completed. At least the critical stuff to get me driving are all done. The remaining items are all mostly personal choice improvements I'd like to make in the future. Looks like its time to add some new tasks and re-make the black board.

Also got my legal registration of the 1929 license plate in the mail last week from the State so the legal business is done.

Haha, It's amazing how many offers like that I've received from friends who find out I'm building this barn. But I'm pretty sure I will be filling it up. I seem to have no problem accumulating stuff to fill the available space.

Thanks for comments on the roadster. First real drive of more than a mile was last night. My town has Sunday night concerts and a car show on main street. So, a buddy and I piled into the roadster and drove it down there for first time public viewing. It ran really good and smoother than even I expected. One grille support rod popped loose but was easily tightened up before returning home. Such a light weight car has plenty of zip with a 350 V8 motor. I hope to have a few more outings before the snow flies this year.

Garage Build Update…..

After three days of no activity (Sunday and two rain days following that) we got good weather yesterday to have the crew working a full day. Probably my picture below won't look a lot different from this angle but you might notice some trim work done and the roof finished. They actually accomplished a lot and much of that was trim work that takes extra time to cut and form pieces. The back wall got completely screwed in place and trimmed out with corner trim, the other long side wall was put up completely as well. We had to make our own J-Channel to accomplish that since I did not have enough pre-formed material on hand and special ordering takes 1-2 weeks. We used brown painted rolled stock and formed it on their metal brake. I then gave it another coat of spray paint with some dark bronze that was a dead ringer for the original color. That allowed them to complete that long wall without further delay.
The roof ridge cap is also on as well as the remaining two roof panels. All that is really left is the front wall, trim (which is on back order) and garage doors. At this point we may be at a stand still until that material arrives at the local Menards store for my pick up.
