I really like your Texaco garage addition. What a great way to store some of your collectibles!

Thanks Jeff I’m satisfied with my first attempt ast something like this.

Bob,
Good score on the wheels & tires!
The wheels look sweet!

Thanks Jon. One of these days I’ll have to pay the big bucks for some new tires but it will ride even smoother then.

No, not another new project!!!:shocking:

:lol_hitti

Yep, I did it again. The new project disease and FB Marketplace got me again this week. I found this pretty cool old school Harley-Davidson 3 wheel golf cart. I’ve always wanted one of these for some strange reason. It’s a gas powered cart from 1965 with a 250cc 2-stroke engine. One other strange feature is how it goes in reverse. To start the motor when you press the gas pedal it has a combo generator/starter motor that belt drives to the motor. So for reverse you stop let the motor shut off, flip an electric switch that reverses polarity to the starter, press the gas and it spins the motor in reverse direction and starts it. Crazy for sure but interesting.

The motor has compression and spins freely so I’m hoping I can get it running again and not have to find a replacement. First task was to clean it up a bit as I hate working on greasy, nasty, dirty vehicles if I can help it. Sprayed the chassis and motor good with Easy Off oven cleaner and the body with Simple Green and then hit it all over with the pressure washer. Made a good improvement.

Now to see if there’s life in the old buggy yet.

Don,
My friend took this one picture before initial cleaning. I have a long way to go but will pick away at it slowly. I had the battery on a charger all day while working around the house but it may not be saved. So the first task may be to get a new battery and see if it will spin over. Also drain the gas tank which has a little very old gas in it yet.
Being a person that likes the old stuff the styling of this cart appeals to me. Very 1960’s.
I hope you can get yours running too.

Bob

I took a couple of shots of mine for you today.

Thanks for the pictures Don. It’s interesting to see the different styling that H-D used. During different years they made 3 and 4 wheelers with a steering wheel and then the 3 wheelers like mine with a tiller. Interesting how your front nose piece is styled but the back half is very similar. Since I don’t golf this will be a people carrier only and I liked how these carts are made in the back that is almost sculpted like two more seats. Looks like a cool project you have there should you choose to restore it.

I have noticed that the (I call it) torque converter seems to be a fluid filled unit because mine is leaking oil constantly drip by drip. I’ll definitely have to take that apart and see it it can be re-sealed or maybe replaced with a more modern day centrifugal clutch.

I tried one last time today to charge the battery but it is officially toast so I went to the auto parts store and bought a new one tonight. I’ll clean a bunch of wiring connections and hopefully try to spin this thing over tomorrow.

Truck Storage

Here’s a project I’ve been working on over the past week for my F350 pickup. A new and improved design tool storage area in the truck bed. I had a very crude wooden box in my previous truck which was not a convenient design. It held a lot of stuff but was hard to access and made the rest of the load floor area hard to use.
For this truck I wanted to build a false floor about 6 inches high with full length drawers to hold tools, tie straps etc and still have most of my load floor a flat surface for general hauling. I copied ideas from other builds and from looking at commercial made units and whipped up my own from mostly scrap lumber except for one sheet of OSB and one sheet of plywood that were bought new.

I had a bunch of 2x6 lumber left over from the pole barn build which was perfect and made three legs that were attached to a header board and then covered with the 19/32 thick OSB.
attachment.php

Also purchased was a 6’ x 8’ indoor/outdoor area carpet that was cut for the top and then glued and stapled to the OSB.
attachment.php

First trial fit into the truck bed.
attachment.php

Next was some 3/8 plywood bottoms attached to more left over 2x6 which was ripped to 5” wide, some scrap 2x4 for the rear of the drawer and scrap 1” board for the drawer fronts.
attachment.php

The blue paint was even free as it was two old partial cans of house paint left over from past use and mixed together to get enough to paint the drawers outside and inside for a smoother surface and better appearance. I used up the carpet cut offs to line the drawers and then bought some pull handles for the fronts.
attachment.php

It all fits nicely and there’s just some little bits to add to lock it into the bed liner and fill in the wing areas on each side to make the flat floor full width. The truck bed liner makes for a pretty easy surface to slide the drawers on. No plans for anything fancier yet unless it proves necessary when loaded up with stuff.

Looks like a nice trick. Reminds me of the trucks with full air ride that raise the bed floor to clear the notch. You did say that you're going to add "wings" in all 4 corners? That'll be real nice for hauling. How hard will it be to take the whole thing out if you want to haul rocks, or gravel, or something?

I could remove the drawers and then lift out the floor in one piece. But likely would not do that any more. If I really needed to haul some messy or heavy dirt I have a good 5 x 8 trailer that would work easier.

Golf Cart Update

FAIL!!!!! :scared:

Well somehow I totally flubbed the initial engine inspection when buying this cart cause after getting it home and trying to turn it over I realized it was really locked up. Took it out of the chassis and took the head and cylinder off to find heavy scoring. And even with the cylinder off the crank still would not rotate. So the original motor is dead and repair parts very expensive.

Plan B
I’m hoping to replace the original motor with a Predator 212 from good ole Harbor Freight. I picked up the motor already but had to order a new torque converter and with delays in shipping due to Covid 19 I’m still waiting for that to arrive.
I really wanted to take this to Bonneville in 3 weeks but that may not happen.

Still hoping to make lemonade out of the lemon but we shall see. :dunno:

Texas Tailgate Adventure

My F350 has typical Michigan rust starting but, my secret weapon against rust is having a daughter who lives near Houston Texas. So during my last visit with her we went tailgate shopping one day and I came home with multiple perfectly rust free possible replacements.

The one I chose was this stock white one that is pretty perfect except for a couple small dents and being the wrong color for the truck.

attachment.php

So what do you do when your truck in red and your tailgate is white??? :dunno:

I'm kind of disappointed that you put a Predator in the golf cart, instead of 600 or 750 bike motor. :lol_hitti

Bob,
Excellent idea!
Looks great!

Thanks guys. It was my first attempt at painting a multi color graphic on a vehicle. So a good place to experiment. It’s harder than it looks on TV. I made sure to use only automotive grade paint because I’ve tried similar with Rustoleum and it always leaks under the masking tape and never comes put with sharp edges.

Well it’s not in there yet. I ordered a new primary clutch unit but due top USPS shipping delays I still don’t have it. Then thanks to FB Marketplace I found another solution to the problem.

See next post..........

Golf Cart Plan “C”

Parts are delayed in shipment for the H-D Golf Cart so I kept looking at other options to have a running vehicle to take to Bonneville.

Thanks to FB Marketplace this turned up and I was able to mostly trade for it so only cost me $50 out of pocket and it actually runs and drives. It does need some TLC and some improvements for my intended purpose but this would work. It’s an old EZ-Go gas cart with a replaced engine that is now a 4 cycle which makes the gas situation easier.

There will be changes!

After lots of last minute work I got the Salt Cart fixed up and ready for Speed Week. Some mods include steering wheel, re-located engine to better line up the drive and driven pulleys, re-located gas tank, engine cover and rear seats. Also a new battery and a bunch of new wiring to a new fabricated dash board.

I also added a front grille out of left over motorcycle parts and some custom painted scallops. :)

A fun little project and its running great so far on the salt and blends in with all the other wacky home project vehicles you see out here. Plus it beats walking in the heat for miles when you want to tour the pits etc.

All loaded up and ready for the trip. I also took time to update the inside of my trailer with some paint, new tie downs, a winch and power from a battery and inverter. Not only useful for the winch operation but also to provide 110V power while on the salt.

It’s a beautiful year on the salt and the scenery is always great. Hot in the 90’s but clear skies and dry surface is making for some fast speed runs.

Lots of interesting cars to see even among the spectators. With dry weather it brings out a lot of vintage hot rods and classic vehicles.
9B896AB0-5E73-4D6F-941C-DF7BDF8E3BAF.jpg8E52C465-1AA8-43C5-9E23-3E947939D8CF.jpg

The craziest thing on Saturday was a fellow that actually landed his small plane west of the course area and taxied right up to the spectator viewing/parking area. A first time for that and the local authorities were not impressed. He eventually got a visit from multiple law enforcement agencies and I assume a ticket of some sort before departing and flying away.

This happened right in front of me yesterday and thankfully only on the return road as this car was being towed out for a potential run. Totally blew out a left rear tire and the conclusion was due to old age. When we inspected the right rear it also had age cracking on the side wall. A vivid reminder to make sure your tires are safe. Thankful this did not happen at 150 mph! :scared:

Very nice racing family however with a very cool car. Built originally in the 50’s by the Grandpa. Now driven by the grandson and sporting a very hotrodded 4 banger.

Jon, You really should plan to go at least one time, just beware the salt is more contagious than Covid. I’m hooked for life and every year I think of how to make the time there more fun. My kids and I had a blast this year and everyone was respectful of masks and distancing while still being very open and hospitable in the pit area.

Xtremek, Be careful what you wish for. My F350 can use a lot of diesel on this trip!! :eyecrazy:
But you are always welcome to come. If you like race cars and ingenuity of all sorts its the place to be. Lots of hydration, sunscreen and a large hat are needed.

More of Speed Week 2020

Here’s some more pictures of just a few of the awesome cars and motorcycles found on the salt this year. Attendance was down due to Covid but still a first class event. Well run by the SCTA and all their volunteers not the least of which are Thomas and Lou from GJ and the 1930’s Garage thread.

Here’s a few more cool vehicle pictures from Bonneville. Even Josh the “Moonshiner” from TV fame showed up to fill his bucket list desire to race at Bonneville. Now I did not see a still in his truck but he is known for hiding them in plain sight and there was a big sheet of copper there. Hmmmmmmm... maybe the Triumph runs on shine!! :scared:

You meet the nicest people at Bonneville......

Anyone know these guys?

Well even with hot sun, Covid and face masks I managed to connect again with Thomas Payne (1930’s Garage Thread) and Lou Bingham (Famed racer and all around great guy). It was great to once again connect face to face out here even if we had to wear masks. These guys come every year and volunteer to help host the best week of fast racing in the world. My hat would be off to them both except my bald head would get more sun burned.

I was truly honored to have Lou take the time to show me his scrap book of the history of his racing years and of the #19 roadster. What a fantastic tale that for me was the true life story of hot rodding in Cali that I dreamed of as a kid. Lou lived it and in great fashion. Not only did he drive the beautiful ‘32 Ford daily but then raced it on weekends at the dry lakes. I did not know it started out as a 5 window coupe and later to be more competitive would have the body swapped for a more aero roadster style. Today its pure race car in the final roadster form but nicely rebuilt just as Lou had it. It is the longest continuous running car in the SCTA and was here again to run on the salt with big Oldsmobile power.

Thanks so much to Lou for taking the time to share with me your story and the life of your very cool car.

Thanks to the Bean Bandits for taking such good care of this historic ride. I had to snap this last picture as it just seemed perfectly iconic and traditional to see 5 guys out on the salt swarmed over and under a ‘32 Ford roadster getting it ready to race.
