2-stage compressor questions

I have an Ingersoll-Rand 2340L5-V compressor that was given to me by a friend/former boss because he got angry at the crew who destroyed it every time he saw it in his shop, and have finally gotten around to tearing it down to see what it needs...

Turns out I need a complete rebuild kit, to include pistons/rods/rings and all the gaskets/finger valves/o-rings - and it runs off a WEG 200V 3PH 5HP motor.

I plan to put in new internals - except crankshaft and crank bearings - and run a drill-powered home down both cylinders prior to assembly...

SO, I was hoping for about three answers:
1) what are the torque specs for re-assembly?
2) what are the specs for breaking in new rings?
3) what’s the most cost-effective way to power? Not at all familiar w/phase converters, so don’t know if it’s cheaper to buy a 5HP, single-phase, 3450RPM compressor motor from someplace like Surplus Supply - or use a phase converter to use the WEG 200V 3PH listed above?

I want to start this rebuild w/my grandson next weekend, so any help - even if just links to other stories/sites/etc. - would be appreciated!!

Why not use a VFD?

I just got a Westinghouse Teco for $135.00 to power my 3 phase 1 hp Mill. Converts my 220 to 3 phase.
Tiniest bit of a learning curve to set up, but works great.653bcbd2a42d8ed5a5064b807e8f328b.jpg
Have to build an enclosure, but this works fine for testing.

I know this is the garage Journal, and less is never better than more here, but many large commercial compressors are rated for 3, 5, Nd 7.5 hp motors, with appropriately sized pulleys. If you don’t need a lot of air delivery, a 3hp motor and matched pulle would probably be a viable lower cost alternative to a new 5 hp motor.

Sacrilege, I know, but something to consider.

Probably going to have to jump to a 7.5 or 10 hp VFD to run it due to the derates. I ran the numbers for my T-30, which has a 7.5 hp on it and it's way cheaper to replace the motor over getting a correct VFD for it.

Thanks, cvairwerks - that's kinda what I was thinking but hadn't started to suss it out for myself yet...

Thanks, finn - but I figure if I'm gonna be buying a new motor anyway I might as well buy the HP to match up with 'factory' motor spec, especially since I had an Ingersoll-Rand tech tell me over a year ago that one place where compressor manufacturers will cut corners is on motor HP sizing... they (no name, to protect the guilty) said manufacturers will often put slightly undersized motors on their smaller compressors to make their profit margin work, figuring they aren't being as heavily used as the 7-10HP market compressors... :fingersx:

Guess I've lived long enough to figure out we ain't in Kansas no more, Toto... I miss the days when engineering teams won out over accountants!

If the cylinders come off you might consider having a machine shop with a Sunnen CK cylinder hone machine hone them. That will put a wonderful crosshatch on it, and even it out. If not use a fine bottle brush. Don't use a two or three arm hone because the stones are really cheap.

Thanks, 930dreamer - those links didn't work from my iPhone, so I dragged out my work laptop, logged into GJ to get the links only to be reminded when I went to save the parts diagram that I already had one from way back when I received the compressor!

Have you had any experience with any of the on-line non-OEM retailers you'd care to share? I'm looking at getting my parts from eCompressorParts.com due to the price difference...
