2 wire Dimmer switch ?

I have this 2 wire dimmer switch in my kitchen that needs replacement…it used to “click “ when you shut off the light…now it won’t shut off unless you spin it to a certain position , The new dimmers all seem to have 4 wires ? I’m not an electrician so what kind of dimmer do I need to replace this ?

Odds are this is how you need to wire it:



New switches have a ground and many are 3-way right out of the box, so that gets wire nutted.

Maybe slightly different depending on actual switch and your wiring

This dimmer now has no ground wire ..just a white and black …should I ground the new switch ?

If it has a green/ground pigtail then yes

The new switch didn't have a wiring diagram? There's usually one printed on the packaging.

Good answer! Make sure you get a normal dimmer and not the 0-10V kind.

That kind is good if you mainly turn on and off. If you use the dimmer a lot the slider kind is better.

PLUS the faceplate screws need to be evenly aligned with each other.

Naw... if i had a project to post up it would include a pic of my 6 supervisors- 2 dogs 4 cats....

I’ll fine tune it up to specs …I’m just glad it works and I didn’t burn the house down …the chirps are a riot by the way
