Well I guess I was wrong. Here are my winnings from yesterday. First up is a tool box that I know nothing about except what is on the label. That tells me a lot but I have never heard of the company and there is almost nothing out there on them. Simonsen Industries, Chicago.

Very solid box and company, seemed to specialize in cantilever and fold out tray boxes. IIRC they were like MBC and make boxes for other people. Love the blue color of the inside. Can we (I) get some close up pics of the #7 please?

Checked out two auctions this morning, neither of which had enough interesting stuff to warrant sitting around way too long to watch it sell for way too much. I stopped in an antique store and found this:

OK the pic I missed yesterday: it's the Babco Drill powered Jig saw. The guts were totally frozen, but it was "just" solidified "lubricant" (Looked more like dried tar than anything else). Usually I can clean things with a soak in SG. SG barely dented this crud. I had to break out carb cleaner, and a stiff tooth brush, and finish off with tooth pics on the nooks and crannies.

First pic is cleaned and assembled the crank shaft drives the connecting rod to the blade holding slide, and also is a cam for the piston that is supposed to clear the dust as you cut.

The port on top is probably for adding lubricant, and probably is supposed to have a felt for dripping the lube slowly. Seems messy since this is intended for wood working... Or maybe it's for a vent and it is missing a filter also made from felt.

The next one is assembled, and the last two show the mounting plate and hose clamp to keep the drill aligned and in place. The mounting plate is adjustable so you can get it reasonably aligned with the shaft. An absolutely perfect angle is not required as the drive shaft has a flex segment in it.

All in all worth a buck and a little time to get it working, to join the rest of the collection of pretty obsolete Drill powered tools.

This weekends garage sale finds and a few pieces from the local Habitat Re-Store.
Cincinnati Tool Co, spring clamp $0.50
Assorted screw drivers, nut drivers (brand new with original price tags), torx and security tips. About half of these were $1.00 ea and the others $2.00 ea. Master Craft, Craftsman and Stanley brands.
A cool little Stanley made "Yankee" flat blade ratcheting tool. Two blade sizes and reversing lever. $1.00
Wizard brand open end wrench, 1" and 15/16".
3 spark plug sockets, $1.00 each.
One really cool farmers friend home made tool tray $10
And maybe the best deal of the weekend, a pretty good looking Snap-On die grinder with cut off abrasive disc. I traded for this through CL for a full size air hockey table that was collecting dust in the basement.

Was there a line of those? I saw what looked like a (stationary) drill-powered sander at one of the auctions I didn't stick around for. Looked very similar, down to the hose clamp for holding the drill (a Craftsman Crown logo, in this case).

Actually "back in the day" (mostly 50's 60's) you could get a lot of different drill powered tools from many different manufactures and re-sellers (Sears/Craftsman for sure, black and Decker, others...). I have I think 3-4 "skill saws" (and used one for a tight quarters cut on my house once...) Probably the most well known is the drill press stand that takes a power hand drill. Oddly I've never used one of those, much less owned one...

I had a bench belt sander from B&D and got it sort of working once. I wasn't too impressed.

None of these were "production" tools, or even very good homeowner tools, but the ingenuity of them is the attraction; sort of the Xmas gimmick tool for Power tools...

Estate sale from Sat. I was probably the 15th in line at the garage. The two guys up front grabbed and dumped into a pile quick.

Spent a bit more than I thought, but I liked all of the clamps. Didn't seem right to just take a few.

Not so much a garage sale today, but a local market I haven't been to for a while. The place is mostly traders selling Am-Tech and Neilsen stuff (some of which looked nasty, but others looked ok - no way of telling if it's any good until it breaks).
Anyway, in the bundles of tools lying scattered around on the stalls of some of the traders (the ones who house-clear, etc) I found a couple of half-decent items.
Facom 5" 3/8 extension
Britool 5" 1/2" extension
Halford Pro 10" 1/2" locking extension
CK T-Bar 1/2"
All of them were almost unused, but one or two had rusty spots, soon cleaned up when back home. They now nestle comfortably in the top tray.
Picking around like th bottom feeder I was today, I was struck by the number of single-hex (six-point) metric 1/2-dr sockets of various good makes I noticed. I will go back up and if I can score them for a dollar/euro each I'll be happy enough to build a single-hex set to complement the main set. When I started out, every socket was 12-point and flank-drive single hex was only just catching on. I never got around to getting a set of those.

I took a trip to the flea market today. My friend was closing up his tool shop last week, SO I THOUGHT?????

Turns out he came back this weekend and was blowing things out the door cheap, but he removed all the real valuable stuff already.

My tool hoarding kicked in and I just went nuts .

Got a bunch of old tools, some Williams,Cornwell,Plomb,Blue Point,Bonney,Fairmount,Kraeuter,Apex,Craftsman. Really all over the place.

Some interesting highlights: old embossed Hinsdale Wrench,MTF (Milwaukee Tool & Forge) rotating grip 1/2" extension, Mustang male X male 3/8" extension, tubular wrenches.

And my best deal of the day was the metric hex sockets. 6 of the 9 hex sockets are snap-on and I scored the whole thing for $5.

Edit: After looking up that multimeter on ebay it was definitely my best deal deal today. Holy cow! I knew it was nice but I really didn't know how much it was worth. I even bargained the guy down from $20 to $10.

If that 87 works 100%, $10 leads and a case WOW. "Did OK" pffff.

well, it was 40, windy, and muddy as all hell this morning in Englishtown, NJ, but finally hit a flea market this year. Like TooManyToyzz said earlier, plenty of decently priced stuff, but it was like... I have it already, and can't flip it and barely break even... so I have to pass. Though I should of snagged 3 SK rat's for $25 but... meh, next time.

I did, however, buy a few (dozen) small things... after the junk was sorted out, 75 decent sockets and 7 wrenches for just over $30. Not too bad, not my greatest either.


Bottom left, CMan's, mostly newer, but 3 metric =V='s (!!!). Center, SK's, 1/2 Wayne. Top left, junk, top right, Bonney, Stanley, Channellock (??), Indestro, and others. Bottom right, Proto's...



I got a Britool! AND has my name engraved on the backside! Definitely a keeper! And the ugly one up top is a Fiat!

I'm dating myself, but I've still got #18 in the Sears catalog page, which I bought new in the early '70's when I was still a teenager. It's moved with me over the years, and still comes in handy on occasion with my original, all-metal one-speed Black and Decker 1/4" drill.

It seems quaint to realize it was only $10.98 back then. I'm sure that was a lot of money at the time.

Here are some close ups of the Stanley Bailey #7 plane I got last weekend.

The rust is purely surface and after taking photos I did a quick pass with scotch bright and I saw a good surface underneath. This will not need or get any harsh restoration.

Found this on craigslist and headed over after dinner.

Snap on bronze punch set in pouch. He was asking $20. Appear unused but pouch has rust stains that cleaned off easily.

Also picked up two big Stanley 60 chisels - 1.5" and 2" for another $5.

The seller buys used tools in bulk to resell. He had bins of knipex ($20 and up) vise grip USA welding clamps, c clamps, kennedy machinist box ($60 or $100 with tools). Big garage full of stuff plus a shed and more outside. I let him know a few things in looking for so he can contact me if he comes across them.

Thanks for the extra pics. I've not seen many Stanley England planes. That is quite a bit different than my ancient No.7. Looks like it will clean up well and a good buy for the money.

Scored this off craigslist for $35 total ($25 for tools plus $10 shipping). I could not get the money sent off fast enough! My favorite tool brand is Plvmb and these will be used carefully! Since I got two 9/16's wrenches, if someone wants to trade a pebble wrench for a size I don't have pictured let me know! I have more Plvmb/Proto stuff too so head over to the plumb/proto picture thread!
