Hit my first two garage sales of the year. Spent a big $10.

The Cummins single speed drill was $5. I just liked how clean it was for its age.
The toolbox they were asking $10 for, and i got talked them down to $5. It included whatever was in it.

Randoms out of the box

IMG_20140405_143206_514_zps9e726309.jpg

The sockets are a Industro, and a Action.

IMG_20140405_143432_695_zps78f932da.jpg

The two coolest things out of the box. The screw driver is a hand drill pretty much. It has the different sized bits held in the handle, and you just push on it and it drills. I tested it out on my workbench, and it totally works. haha

Well, after several days of rain, including yesterday when the weather guessers said it wouldn't, and a little more last night, it cleared off and I had one of the best days for yardsailing in weeks! :pimpflash

The Irony, is that other than the Flea market, none of the scheduled stops got me anything! Except for the FM, this was all from Targets Of Opportunity! :dunno:

TOO #1 no tools but some cool stuff: A rack of Poker chips, that were unusual and cheap, or I'd have left them. $3

attachment.php

attachment.php

A Glass vase for SWMBO. She likes these clear heavy square or rectangular vases for forcing bulbs around Xmas. $2

attachment.php

TOO #2 and older gent: "This will be my last yardsale! I'm moving!" he was also a WWII Vet. How rare is that anymore? Heck My dad was Korean war vet and he passed in Jan at 83... This gut had to be past 90...

2 Bondhus 1/2" ball hex drivers, a lantern globe, a brass Prop tank plug with a brass chain and ring, and a nos lantern striker. $2

attachment.php

TOO #3, A tiny Machinist vise! $5! For grins I weighed it, and its almost 6-1/2 lbs, so well under the so called buck a lb mar... 2" jaws, 2" opening, and its an old school stud through the bench swivel! I need to come up with a big wing nut, and a plate better than that cut washer for under the bench, and replace the double nuts some wonk used to get the screw to retract the jaws on opening with something better (I may go with the Spring idea Parker used on the 0000 vise I just sent off) I suspect the screw is a replacement for something that was broken, and certainly the handle is not factory, but everything else says this was lightly used.

Markings are: AM Co, Athol Mass. USA on one side, and No. 10 on the other: is AM Athol?

attachment.php

attachment.php

the fleamarket was good to me: first stop was Craftsman Tin snips. Craftsman in outlined block letters... I've no clue on these for age/era... :dunno: and the wire formers (no name) for $3 total;

attachment.php

Second was the tiny Winnie the Pooh book and I got that because SWMBO likes Pooh, and its title is "WTP and Piglet go Hunting!" I'm a sucker for a hunting book I guess... I almost left it though as they started at $3 and i put it back, they countered with $2 and I gave the book a dirty look and they asked what I would offer. I got it for a buck. They weren't happy but hey, that could have turned me down... :pimpflash

The Bonney DBE was a buck "because it's you; every one else I'd charge $2 for it" Hmmm I'm becoming a known fixture at this FM! :lol_hitti

Then I got the Thorsen 77J open gear ratchet, and that 10" SK 1/2" breaker. it also has the square drive in the handle, so I'd have to say this is a 10" extension with breaker capability... because :wtf: are you going to do with a 10" breaker?

The FM continued:

I picked up an incomplete set of pool balls, (missing the 8 ball  ) for $2 and two bucks for the drain guards, I already used 1... I'm thinking about using the balls as handle ends for DP's that are missing the ball or handle...

attachment.php

The next TOO got me this slow speed (~ 120 rpm? the Gear reduction motor has almost no specs on it!) wet grinder. The wheel is 10 X 1-1-/2" Not bad for $20!

attachment.php

Its an old Monkey Wards, but this is a really nice setup. Needs a little TLC, but I'll get some use good out of it.

attachment.php

The guy also had this tension cable. 19-24 lbs capacity, and it has the ratcheting lock (which I think I'l probably disable depending where I decide to use it. Hes said it was new before he left it out in the weather... $5.50

attachment.php

Another TOO and I landed a new Tsaw insert, some new Copper sheet (10 X 4 X .025), and a 1 lb soldering copper tip. $2

attachment.php

Last TOO and a SO deep and 2 Proto impact sockets, for $5.

One estate sale yesterday out on a rural road. CL said tools, so I took a chance.

Nothing spectacular, but a number of useful items. It cost $50.00 for the whole pile as a bundle.

Short Werner stepladder. I use these all the time.
The 1/2" pipe clamps are Jorgensen. The 3/4" is a Bessey. I got the long 3/4 pipe thrown in.

The 5 gal. fuel jug has a spout that actually pours, unlike the new ones.

Craftsman -V- 1/2 and 3/4 combos, 11/32 ignition wrench, 3/8 ratchet, 6" extension, feeler gauge, jeweler's screwdriver kit, and spark plug socket.

Metal office tray and decent short 3/8 extension.

Proto slip joint pliers and snap ring pair. Unbranded awl and rusty chain saw file with a nice handle. Small Eklind allen wrenches, mechanic's wire, and unbranded razor blade holder.

Outlaw, I'll bet the little vise is an Athol. It sure looks like the Athol design features, and it was called Athol Machine in the earlier era, which would match up to the "A.M." marking. The big support under the slide and the guard above the screw head are distinctive features. The screw is definitively a replacement.

Yep I was able to find the Co. name on another vise: Athol Mfg. Co. So verified! My first Athol!

What I have NOT been able to do is ID an age. I suspect turn of the century, since it has the stud through bench swivel.

Great stuff all

I'm also now kicking myself, the guy had 3 of them for $10 each, I only bought 1.
When I asked him for prices he first said $10 on the ratchet, looked at it then said "oh, I thought this was a torque wrench, it's only a ratchet, $5"

Cool, thanks for the additional pic. I've never seen a box like with that deep top deisgn that wasn't special purpose for a power tool or the like. The single drawer at the bottom looks handy.

Hit my first two garage sales of the year. Spent a big $10.

Good stuff, that is called a push drill and does indeed work pretty slick.

I did! It was a bit wild this morning wasn't it? I'm actually going back tomorrow in the AM to pick up another saw. I hope it is still there. I don't know where that guy gets stuff, I mean he even had a pile of old boat hardware out there. Started at $15 on the vise but when I started walking off he said $10.00. Its just a little guy but it will be useful in my small basement shop.

Oh yeah, I have scored plenty of things from him in the past. He does get some decent stuff. I once grabbed a nice set of Cornwell pebble finish standard wrenches for $15 a couple of years ago. They were in near mint condition, and he must have not recognized the brand since he was charging way more for Mac and Matco stuff. I also got a Craftsman block grinder off of him last year for $15.

I had my 3 y/o son with me today so I was chasing him around more than tool shopping. Hoping to take a ride up tomorrow. Going to look at a '91Isuzu Trooper in MD early tomorrow morning. If I buy or not will dictate whether I go or not since wifey will be along for the ride:willy_nil.

Got this old Huot drill cabinet from work...they were cleaning some old stuff out of the tool crib. Gonna be loading it up with twist drills as I get them back from being sharpened :D

So I got these today. A ca '79-'80(?) 15 amp 120v Milwaukee 6373 wormdrive in good shape for $30 which I cleaned up a little. I left some lovin' on it though, no sense in making it look like NOS. It's missing the front adjustment lever (but a 9/16" wrench will take care of that for now), the guard return spring is iffy, and I need to flush the oil and do a little repair on the cord, but the brushes are new and the Freud blade looks useable.

A clip on lamp from Chairman Mao. Two bucks but the proceeds went to the hospital. Need to swap out the flexy neck for longer, should be a little bit of fun.

And an Allway RK4 utility knife for a quarter. Nothing special except the "action" is nice and tight which isn't always the case on even new knives.

Jeff: great save on the little Hout box. any chance you can give us a few more pictures and details like the size and maybe with the drawers open. that one made my list of cool old boxes.

Outlaw: you seem to have a good idea for repurposing and excellent idea of using the old pool balls for handles on your DP's and other tools. any chance you get one installed would love a picture of one or more installed.

great finds for the rest of you and too many to list. keep up the good work and always like looking to see what can be found ready to be discarded by the prior owners.

Only time for two sales today. One was household stuff only, but I netted two strings of xmas lights. One new in the box. Both for $1. I'm still attached to the older glass bulb sets and this is the best way to get spare bulbs and strings.
The second garage sale was a local semi-pro that always has reasonable prices. Their first sale of the season so not many tools but I still found a few items of interest. The Rigid No.10 pipe was $5 and the assorted hand tools were $5 for all. I'm not sure what the mini-shears are for ( unless I go into raising mini-sheep) but I seem to be attracted to small tools lately. On that theme I also got this partial set of mini end wrenches and nut drivers. I wish the set had been complete but its something to look for in the future.

Hit up the Portland swap meet today! Got some goodness at decent prices. Picked up mostly Plvmb but also some Proto Los Angles, old school craftsman and some Barcalo Buffalo.

If anyone has the handle to this pipe die set let me know! I am also wondering how old this set is? I know it is older than the crown top log and the heritage? Does this make it from the 1930's?

Also picked this Craftsman tool chest up for $10. It is in pretty good shape and still retains lots of it's original paint. It is missing a handle so if someone has an extra handle let me know. Do you guys think I paid too much :dunno::lol_hitti

$10 for a vintage tool chest! No way you overpaid. That's a great deal.

Good finds guys! Love that organizer Jeff, I have the same set for numbers, fractions and letters but my letters cabinet has newer style pulls(drives my ocd crazy:lol_hitti).

Not a garage sale and no where near as good as my last $100 Craftsman score, but I picked this up from a CL listing minutes ago. I know, I know, another lathe :wtf: but the price was right and look at the base!! I finally got my dual post Craftsman base and once I flip the lathe, it should be free and maybe even make some change...:willy_nil

Even came with a cool Crown Top motor in great condition.

Jeff: i like the insides of your Hout drill bit box maybe even better than the outside which is awesome. nice find and it's on my gotta have one list now.
I've got plenty of drill bits just thrown in a drawer now which would look awesome in your box and i won't ask you to sell it to me because i'm sure you have a use for it.

Nine: i'm still looking for my first real Craftsman grinder or machine stand and you've found another one. this one looks like one that can be used for several things once you sell the lathe that is sitting on it. good eye seeing that under the boards hiding it.

Smokeshow: i think you probably paid $10 too much for that Craftsman bottom rolling toolbox, but luckily I'm not far and i can reimburse you the $10 and pick it up so you won't have to clean it or have to mess with it. i had a few friends going to that Portland swap meet and I've never been. how was it because they always say it's a great way to spend a few days?

It was really cool. I got there late and only had 2 1/2 hrs before they closed. I tried to see as much as I could be felt kinda rushed. I was looking for Chrysler/Mopar parts and Plvmb tools and other quality tools to add to my collection. Found some good tools but no parts. I would recommend going when you can make a day of it!

On a side note, are you the guy who keeps buying the Plvmb and proto tool boxes off craigslist?? I see them for sale and then reply to the ad and by then they are gone! :)

The local (well, closest) Flea Market was supposed to open this week, but they had to stay closed due to muddy fields. The place is always either a mud pit, or a dust bowl.
(the family has been fighting the last 20yrs over who gets to put the money in their pockets, instead of using the excavation company they also own to put in drainage or gravel)

I found 2 sales this morning instead, but ended up spending more in gas than it was worth. The second stop was one of the regular sellers at the FM. I picked up a small unmarked oiler for a buck, just so I wouldn't go home empty handed after driving around all over the place.

Dave: you may not have found a lot, but quality abounds in those items and a very cool hammer.

Smokeshow: Although i have bought my share of tool boxes and items off of Craigs I don't have any of those "P" boxes you are not able to buy. i do like their tools so i would be a potential buyer in case some show up and are available so "better be quick" is my motto.

Great day at the sales today! Snagged a few nice tools for a song.

Pic #1:
3-hole punch by Master Products of Los Angeles, CA. I don't know why I buy these 3-hole punches, I already have 3 of them. But this one was cast steel, and well made, for $2

Pic #2: all for $6
set of 4 Craftsman metric nutdrivers
Proto 19/32 combo wrench

Pic #3: all for $8
Proto 5249 3/8-inch ratchet
Craftsman heavy-duty needle-nose pliers
pair of Proto LA sockets, one 3/8-drive deep and other 1/4-drive

Pic #4: all for $5
Channellock 927 retaining-ring pliers, like new
DeWalt screwgun bit adapter

Pics #5-6: all for $7
Ridgid 8-inch pipe wrench
and, best find of the day:
Schick-brand made in USA 12-inch non-sparking adjustable wrench, marked "5120-264-3794-ALBR". I assume the first numbers are the military Field Stock Number (predates the National Stock Number) for this item. Last is ALBR, ALuminum Bronze? Not sure what alloy this is.

Want to make the Schick wrench shine again, but heard that wire brushing BERYLCO (a similar non-sparking alloy) makes Beryllium airborne which is toxic. What alloy is this wrench, and how would you recommend making it shine again without killing me?

I only managed to hit one sale this weekend and it was pretty much a bust.

I did pick up these Proto 239 slip joint pliers. I can't find anything on-line about them. They are safely ensconced in my pliers rack with all my other misfit pliers.

Cheers

Jim

Those Channellock snap ring pliers are great if you can keep them working.
