Nine, I'm surprised an Upholsterer, didn't recognize it!

Right, it was familiar but I could not place it.

Not so fast guys. :3gears:

Nine. Yours is a different vintage and is an old sailmakers tool. They came in different sizes, I used to have several and have at least one left. They are indeed very similar and work the same way, but not for grommets. Yours, Nine was used for the hand sewn eyelets in sails, and possibly other canvas items but it was for the liner after the ring had been sewn into the Sailcloth. I still have a few of all the original parts and will post pics when I get back to the shop this weekend. For now this shows the difference but not the application.

http://sailrite.wordpress.com/2013/05/09/grommet-vs-eyelet-whats-the-difference/

Now that is exactly like it, I should have known that as well but I don't see many boats or tarps in the custom auto scene.

Frigidaire aluminum ice cube tray
Texas license plate, a little rusty but WTH
Bada PM-102 wheelweight tool

Pics 5-7:
Wilton 1750 Tradesman 5" vise, missing a couple small parts but a good deal for $30

Only one sale this morning, the other was postponed until tomorrow but I didn't know that until I drove all the way out there .

Not much there, but I turned up :

2 - 6" clamps (MF diamond logo)
2 - 4" clamps (MF diamond logo)
1 - 4" Sargent & Co #14 clamp
and a Parker Line #55 Coping Saw

Spent $10

I gotta stop buying 6" clamps ! :lol_hitti

I'm meeting up with wrenchguy this afternoon for a swap (all previously posted). Should be a good afternoon. ;)

Does anyone know who used the M|F diamond logo ?
I tried a search, but came up empty.

Sailing season is just now showing some signs of life.

The Williams tool kit was $3 but not complete. (nice case though). The Plumb ratchet was $2. Everything else was $.50 - $1.00.

P1030148.jpg

P1030149.jpg

The XY machinist vise was $10 but it's Chinese. I guess a Chinese XY vise is better then no vise.

P1030152.jpg

Old Triplett multimeter with manual and bundle of jumpers $2.50. I still like analog for certain measurements. New sleeve of 100 sheets of sandpaper $3.

P1030150.jpg

10 lb lead paperweight, small train track anvil, Starrett Micrometer $2, old Inclinometer, small Jacobs chuck $1.50.

P1030151.jpg

I never pass up Coleman Fuel of Mineral Spirits when it's cheap or in the free pile. (great for parts cleaning). New jug for $1.

P1030154.jpg

Dayton 1/2HP 1725 RPM motor $5.

Good Finds Guys!

Nine your pics died...

Jake, I'm going to WAG that MF = Millers Malls. :dunno:

Dave, I have a similar Williams socket box (Mine has a carry handle on the top, but yours is in MUCH nicer condition) , it currently holds a bunch of Electrical parts for several decades now. I've been thinking about putting my Williams stuff in it...

Nine: pictures are showing up fine for me albeit the product didn't look as impressive as your usual daily hauls. maybe Outlaw was expecting more or there is a rumor going around that he is older than some of the 100 year old vises he knows so much about.

Dave:I love your finds. you have a good eye because i know you shop at the same king of places the rest of us do. or do you? that Williams box looks new for maybe a 40 year old box or is it older (or younger)?

Jake: why stop buying clamps when you can quality ones like those with the butterfly holds on them. i pick up almost every one i see unless it's broken and will have to start pulling them out of a box and using them.

I wasn't expecting much today since it rained for the prior day an a half, so I wan't disappointing...

Not too bad for an off day; more non-tool things than usual, starting right off the bat with something "shiny" for SWMBO:

Not glass or crystal, but she liked them. Plans to hang them in her office window.

The local Collage had a "garage sale Blast" Flea market, but it had a poor showing. I did find a few things:

From the bottom: Bonny "SteelDraulic" Pliers. Clearly a special use and it was... from AA:
2581 "Steeldraulic" Pliers

In the late 1920s various makes of automobiles (e.g. Hubmobile, Auburn) were fitted with the "Steeldraulic" brand of mechanical brakes. These brakes had an awkward adjustment mechanism and required a special type of pliers for service, which were accordingly dubbed "Steeldraulic pliers"

Mastercraft Adjustable wrench from Heller Bros, Blue Point DBE, Plvmb, 1/4" drive Tee slider, lawsuit Plvmb DOE, 2 SO Combos, 1 mm, 1 SAE, A proto, and a Duro Chrome Male/Female 1/2" Ratchet - $12

The second set of comics were from a yard sale, the DVD's from a second small Flea market. .50c and $2

A couple of clamps and glass block with one end out, so wil be used decorativly is some way.. (maybe a wad so Xmas lights inside, or some Guppies...) $5

A Bronze Leaf for SWMBO, A yankee type driver from the German "British Zone" so lat 40's, A couple of Wards Eclipse Wrenches, Billings DBE, A Fleet, DOE, a Mac Combo, and a McKaig Hatch DOE I got because I'd never sen one before. Whops almost missed the Klein 10 ft tape! (Jeff you have first call if interested)

The rest of today's finds;

Two SK sockets, bracketing a 1/4" drive Hinsdale socket. I've never seen a 1/4" drive Hinsdale until today...

That was all for today (so far, going back out in a minute...)

This is "Before" basic cleanup on one of the clamps and the Masterwrench:

And After:

And this id why I like the MasterWrench as an adjustable wrench. the harder you pull the tighter it grips... No Clue why Crescent "won" that battle... :dunno:

I got this chinese 8" Wilton vise at the scrap yard last Saturday for $26.25 and it weighs 75 pounds. Somebody had beat on the handle, but the vise works great.

Today I picked this card file/bolt bin and the Reed No. 1 Pipe vise. Bolt bin is missing some drawers, but I can fab something up. It has a US Treasury Dept. tag. Got the vise apart and soaking in vinegar. It should clean up nicely. Bin and the vise cost $33.25 at a combined weight of 95 pounds.

Taumac; Yours are the pipe wrench version of those. still all good!

DIF; That was a quick hit with a fine wire wheel.

SGS; just keep an eye out for card file drawers, they do show up in the oddest places... write the basic dimensions on a card and keep it in your pocket, and you can also find them in single adn double cases...

Heller Bros were founded in 1865 but the wrenches were patented 7.5.27 and 4-14-25 and were popular in the 20's. I suspect most of the date from the 20's and 30's. not sure how long Heller continued in business. I think they also did Horseshoeing tools and gear.

Davefr, good stuff as always. What is that motor off of? It looks like a spline pinon on the shaft?

Bin and the vise cost $33.25 at a combined weight of 95 pounds.

Either those are extremely stout or I'm just having a hard time understanding the true size of them. 95lbs was just the bins and pipe vise? :headscrat:

Bin is 33"W x 17"D x 14"H. I would say that the bin by itself weighs around 80 lbs. All the sides, top and bottom are double wall steel. They don't make like that anymore.

Just picked up these Snap-On cabinets from CL. Paid $200 for all of them, I'm comfortable with what I paid since I'm going to use them. The newer logo one has a bit of damage. They're actually marked scrap from a local community college. I also started to pull off the homemade parts overlay and there's a real one behind it, I think I'm going to get the heat gun out and finish it. It looks like these are just vinyl applied to particle board? I'm not sure if they came that way from snap on or not.

I'm going to be on the lookout for one of those MasterWrenches.

Didn't find much worth posting myself,a Craftsman phillips and needlenose and a Mayhew punch for 6 bucks total. I did get to see an elderly guy get thrown out because he had most of a craftsman 1/4 inch set in his pocket. They told him to pay or they would call the police. Kind of sad. I probably would have bought that set if I had been there sooner, they wanted five bucks.

Outlaw, those glass blocks make nice fish bowls.

I was thinking about it, and mentioned Guppies, but look at the distortion of the mat I use for the pics. those fish would flat look weird, and the poor fish would probably go psychotic looking at the outside world and the "monsters" looking at them!

On my way to meet up with wrenchguy, I took the long way and stopped back in to the estate sale from this morning. I had seen 2 more clamps, but didn't buy them because I have more than I need already. They were haunting me ........ THEY WERE HAUNTING ME !!! :willy_nil

I grabbed the clamps, a 5" Hargrave and a 6" unmarked one. I also snagged a wooden box o' goodness. It was full of socket screws, socket bolts, and other misc bits-n-pieces.

The meet-up was nice. We flapped our gums for a short while, and when I looked at my watch 3hrs had gone by.

I came home with a trunk full of Huot top boxes ! Both have been posted here before. One from the mid-west, and the other from the west coast (the hard way). The second box had a mishap on the way to wrenchguy's place and will need it's share of loving taps with a hammer to get'er back in shape. Stand in line and take a number. :lol_hitti

Big swap meet today. Most of this stuff was $1-2. I think the most I paid for any one tool today was $10. Here's what I got:

1/2" Drive and special tools:

Starting from the inside and working out-Firestone Pebble 1/2" drive breaker bar and long extension, SK 1/2 ratchet, Craftsman circle-U sliding t-handle, Chromium Vanadium (Indestro) sliding t-handle, Fleet and Husky speeders, Craftsman battery terminal puller, Sturtevant "Roto Torq" (anyone explain what this is?), KD brake bleeder wrench, Craftsman Distributor wrench, SO brake bleeder wrench, Walden L-handle, SO distributor wrench, and a complete KD ignition tool set.

Pliers, Wrenches, and Screwdrivers:

Starting in the upper left corner. Artisan long screwdriver, Challenger stubby, 2 Williams nut drivers, 2 Stevens Walden Spintite nut drivers, pliers by Bonney, Harrold, Herbrand, and Penncraft. In the upper right, moving down: SK Wayne, S-K, Snap-On/Vacuum Grip, Artisan, Wizard, Craftsman, Indestro Super, and Willard battery pliers with one pair of Danielson pliers just to the left. There are 4" adjustables by Crescent and Malco, an Indestro auto kit wrench, and combos by Williams, Duro Chrome, and S-K Wayne. Finally are the DBEs by Proto, Penens (2), Indestro (2), Hinsdale, and S-K Lectrolite.

Finally, 1/4 and 3/8 drive tools:

From the top. Proto 1/4 and 3/8 ratchets (the 1/4 is a "Los Angeles"), 1/4 and 3/8 Master Mechanic-branded Easco/Craftsman RHFTs (the quick-release mechanism appears to be different from the C-man RHFTs. Just noticed the 3/8 needs a rebuild kit...), Indestro and Walden 1/4 drive breaker bars, Craftsman 3/8 RHFT, Thorsen 3/8 open-gear, 3/8 Husky, 3/8 Duro Chrome, 3/8 Husky, 3/8 breaker bars by Wizard and International Harvester, and a Plomb 1/4 speeder.

Wow, lots of good stuff. The Surtevant is a torque screwdriver, just like a standard torque wrench but for 1/4" hex bits. I laughed at the plomb 1/4 speeder, for some reason it has a funny look, so long and skinny.

The local flea market was a bust this week, the drizzle kept the casual sellers away (I have better luck with them). The regular sellers can be pricey. I found a metal warning sign and a 2" clamp for $14.

On the way home I went to an estate sale. They advertised "everything in the house must go", but only had a few tables in the garage with the usual offerings. No tools.

However, the house next door was taking advantage of their signs and was having a yard sale in their garage. I found the perfect fan for venting my shop out of the walkout bulkhead. It's a 2-speed Westinghouse at just the right hight for the steps and runs great. The color is 50's appliance Baby Blue. It only cost me $3.

I picked up 3 - 8" Husky C-Clamps at a Townwide Sale yesterday for $5.00 each. They are $15.00 each new - so an ok deal overall.

It was like most charity Townwide Sales I've been to - lots of folks putting stuff out but not highly motivated or having particularly nice stuff. I'm surprised is most of the people make back the charity fee to the town to be listed on the map.

My towns sale is next week - so we shall see how it goes.

Cheers

Jim.
