Lotsa guys with mild blacksmithing expertise hammer these out into neat knives. Search the internet for "railroad spike knife" and you'll see the beauty that lies in those small picks of steel...

Now I definitely know what I'm doing with that so-called punch, err spike. Better yet, someone on here had a pic of a railroad spike turned bottle opener, which was cool. Here it is:

One sale today, of which I was bamboozled by some guy - probably a GJ member. *******! He jumped out in front of me, mind you, from behind me, to lay his claim on a 50/60's Craftsman portable toolbox full of tools. I think I may keep this one. I am going to clean it up and give it a paint job. It doesn't look like it was used all that much.
Just a side note the last few vise's I bought turned out to be either cracked or broken in one way or another. I ended up stripping them for the parts and selling them. I did all right as far as not getting hurt but this one makes up for them.

Yes, exactly! It was a huge project, but I enjoyed doing it. Funny thing, today sometimes people will ask me about certain casting numbers, as though they think I have them all memorized! But I've done so many books on car codes and numbers that I can no longer remember hardly any of them. LOL.

I just tell them to do the same thing I do....look it up in the book!

Red Bull, on your third photo down from the top, with the vacuum diaphragm pointed straight up... Do you see that round metal disk pressed into the circular hole, about the size of a nickel? That seems to be the disk or tag which I was referring to (although I usually find them on the side of the carb body...not the front like yours).

Look at it with a magnifying glass, and see if there are 7 or 8 digits pressed into it, following the radius of the disk.

By the way, in these additional photos, I see that your fuel-inlet boss is indeed facing the passenger side fender like Chevy and Cadillac carbs usually do, instead of straight ahead like Buick, Olds, and Pontiac usually do.

The odds of finding a mate to that brass headlight are not good...they never are! But since it has been converted to a seal beam, it's mostly a great wall decoration anyway.

It's been a while since I've been able to get on here and keep up. This is a bit of the stuff I managed to find in the past couple of weeks. The re-loader plus a couple of cleaning kits set me back $10. The Spain made Gamo Delta break barrel was $3 and was the only find one weekend. Almost all of the hand tools cost me $15 at another sale, a lot not shown. I can't find the set of Palmera (now part of Snap-On Europe) box end wrenches that came with them. The Craftsman sabre saw was free along w/ a chainsaw. My favorite out of it all is the Herbrand ratchet encased in rock hard grease for a buck.

The reason I can't post everything is explained in the last photo. I started sorting old stuff, using the new stuff, mixing it into...stuff, and now I cant find a damned thing.

I might have a problem. I might be a hoarder.

Lump! I have a copy of your book! Great info! I also have an old binder with all sorts of casting numbers that came from a wrecking yard, that got it from an engine re-builder...

Almost forgot! Not a shop tool, but a tool none the less.
Not an adding machine. This is an early 20's Monroe electrified calculator. The guy running the estate told me that the owner, an engineer, used this machine at his first job. I don't doubt it by the books that were around the house.
It's a good thing I like to live in fear. The wiring is freaking scarey.

Cool, Outlaw. Glad to hear you like it. You know, when I was researching this book, I found lots and lots of books and lists of casting numbers, but I quickly learned that much of the information was either incomplete or inaccurate. There was a constant problem with confusion between part numbers and casting numbers too. And you wouldn't believe how many times I found listings for "casting numbers" on intake manifolds, which were actually the firing order of that engine! So today, whenever I find a list of casting numbers, I ASSUME that it is not accurate...out of habit.

I spent over a year gathering data, interviewing expert engine builders and collectors, snapping photos of example parts, and corroborating multiple sources against each other, in order to come up with the listings in that book.
I developed a system for recording every casting number I had found, so that I could abbreviate and encode the information with respect to accuracy and especially credibility. I still have file cabinets full of the raw data. It was a massive project.

Speaking of pics, here is my newest addition to my Craftsman collection

and the rest of my finds this morning. Everything came from one estate, except the Vacuum Grip nut busters and REED mic below. There are 2 Columbian 7" and a Wilton 10" wood vises, about 240' of 12-2 NM-B(just noticed the guy rang it up as $1), Craftsman router guide bushings, Starrett drill/wire gauge and 18" of what used to be a 24" ruler , wooden 3 speed shift knob, Craftsman clamp, 11oz Channel Lock hammer head, Snap On hose clamp pliers, Petersen VG, Proto rolling head pry bar and the tools from the other stop.

I have the same bandsaw in my "to do" pile, your's has the fence bracket that I'm missing (I'm missing eh fence as well). Could you provide some measurements (including spacers) and pictures so I can make a new one ? Thx

I still think it's funny that the "auxiliary table extension" is a piece of plywood that cost extra for the upgrade.

My grabs from an estate sale this morning.





In all I'm about $100 poorer, mostly thanks to the desk.

Bottom pic is a couple of small no-name socket driver sets, an Indestro allen drive socket set, a pair of S-K adjustable pliers or as they will be known from here on out "channel locks", an S-K multi-tip screw driver, and a Blackhawk 1/2" drive free wheeling ratchet.

The box fan is a mid-century Dominion. My wife was a bit surprised when I got her to lift it.

I passed on an 80 model a year or two back and it had become an obsession to find another 80/100 until I got lucky this past weekend. I would only get rid of this 80 to upgrade to the 100, and that single pole stand is about the only pole stand I don't have, you just passed on my dream man...

I have been busy with other stuff but yes I have picked up a few scores lately. And today I found something that Beatcad does recently!

I would not plug that in. It says 115v @ 50 cycles. Running it at 60 cycles (todays standard) will probably wreck the motor.

I just sold the same model minus stand and original motor, because I don't really need 4 table saws, but if he has the original blade guard (I don't see it in the pics) that is a great price.
