Outlaw is right about the dumb luck. When I got home from my stop in the morning, I came home to check Craig's for more sales

I turned up a single line ad, "machine sale, lathe, mill, vises, band saw tools" posted just a few minutes before.

Outlaw would not string us along, waiting patiently.

I'l try! This may not all get done tonight! :willy_nil

And thanks guys!

All this is "as found". No real cleanup unless it's to wipe off dust or wet oil/grease. The sellers told me their father was a life long mechanic, on aircraft starting in the navy, then with the airlines. there were tools everywhere, and If I wasn't the first one in there, it was close to it. certainly the usual scalper types had not been through. the "kids" were around my age so I'm guessing the father could have been a Korean war vet, but there was one much older guy. If he was an older brother, the father was a WWII vet.

Claim was he'd been in the house 50 years. it looked like it. the work bench was 8 ft of I think bowling ally lane. Well greased. sitting on top of two tool chests. One hand made from aluminum, the other a three drawer factory, probably 50's.

there were carry boxes everywhere, and another three drawer roller that looked like a Pressteel, but no markings. :dunno:

First bag up: the "delicate's" went into the medics' bag. No markings, I think it's likely WWII (I think all the bags are WWII)

attachment.php

Wood working: Luffkin 6' folding rule with a brass depth gauge, a TINY Yankee driver, No. 35. -a bit of oil and it worked perfectly (I left several more less interesting drivers and push drills), a small draw knife (the blade is bigger than it looks, its the angle), and a wood spoke shave

attachment.php

Hand Vise (USA), Hand drill, wet stone on a block, raw hide mallet inserts for a LARGE mallet, and a 10" plastic prop.

attachment.php

Hand drill reciprocating saw attachment, Military Sight scope (no magnification), a steel bar, and a steel ball (vice handle materials), Mitotoyo dial calipers (need cleaning), and something for doing Magnafluxing. (need to research this one)

attachment.php

Locks: the two American's use the same key! and a brass lid stay/keeper bar.

attachment.php

The two Torque wrenches: Both Apco Mossberg, one a click stop 1/4" drive the other a dial 3/4" drive 33 inches overall length. Yes the handle is crooked on the big one. The housing is cracked, so a wall hanger, but WHAT a wall hanger!

attachment.php

And not from the bag, the jack. I think this is for maneuvering equipment. No markings but I suspect its about 10-15 ton, and will clear 6-1/2" fully depressed. It at least needs fluid, but I tried lifting on the piston and it has "compression" so it's likely good to go once it gets fluid added.

Nice locks. Those are Eagle, not American. I bet they are marked US SET.

Absolutely right on the make. My brain faded between taking the pics and typing... (I have some American locks somewhere, -or did...)

The US Set is not there, no other markings. :dunno:

Hey guys, I have enough people showing up repeatedly to the same sales I go to (Mostly scalpers), so I don't need more competition!

Bag two (actually a combination of bags two and three...) and I should probably say, "Pouch, comma, Mechanics" These two now make three for me, and after laundry these will find use in my camping setup..

2 No. 6R welders vise grips, a Proto Gear puller, Pliers in Craftsman 4" japan ignitions, and some heavily modified Pexto's. this guy had the largest collection of modified customized tools I've ever seen. and they and the leftover bits were EVERYWHERE.. Last are the Sargent cutters.

That may be an aircraft jack, typically for landing gear with dual tires. There is a half ball on the bottom of the gear, slide it in between the tires, jack it up a bit and change the tire. http://navyaviation.tpub.com/14014/css/14014_230.htm

Some nice scores by a lot of people! I was selling and buying at Lewis Auto Swap meet in Canton Texas. Not a huge swap meet but they use the immense Canton First Monday Flea Market grounds, huge covered spots, a little rain no problem, wind is not blowing canopies all around etecetera. I am going to go unload my goodies soon!

Great finds, everyone! No epic hauls this weekend. Did hit 3 sales, bought stuff at one. More details to follow, but I paid $20 for this tool box:

I think the original color was a solid dark blue. The exterior surfaces may have had a textured finish? I have done zero research into brand, but here's a pic of a slide for reference (zkling?).
Yes, from the looks of it, that is a 40s Craftsman tool box. I've got that same box with the logo still on it - inherited from my grandfather who had it since new (I think). I haven't been able to nail down the exact year because there are so few of them and mine doesn't have any plates or tags with information. I also have two of the three drawer bottom boxes to match. One was my grandpa's and one was a craigslist find. As for the paint color, mine was a wrinkle brown or gray exterior and blue smooth interior. I'm pretty sure these were made by kennedy so I'm going to order one spray can of each to try. Please PM me if you decide to sell that box.
Nice find!

Here's Saturday's score. Rained like hell all day, but got to 2 of them.

First one had a lot of hand tools. I went thru and grabbed anything that looked familiar or was made in the good ol' US of A.

Kennedy KK-19, a little surface rust on the tray but otherwise fine. Yup, $5!

Contents of that box. Craftsman spark plug tester, a cool mahogany handled bottle opener and a 'Ratcheting VersaTool'. (funky ratcheting screwdriver thing) are the items of note here.

Those proto and plvmb items don't look very good finds, you better send them my way so I can dispose of them properly:drool:

As you know, if you wash canvas in a washing machine it will ruin the canvas. (don't ask me how I know ). Hopefully you meant that you are just going to carefully hand wash the bags! Great score on all the items! As usual Outlaw kills it again.

Bought this yesterday from our sort of Dutch Craigslist. It's a 100 piece set from 1998 and I also got three Craftsman adjustable wrenches (6, 8 and 10 inch) with it and it still has the $30 price tag on it . About 75% is unused and the other 25% is used one time.
The guy was asking 60 euros ($83) and I brought it home for 40 euros ($55) :). It's 100% complete and all is made in USA of course :D! I still needed a sae wrench set, some 1/4 drive sae sockets and some 3/8 drive metric sockets, so I'm really happy I found an almost unused Craftsman set as you can't buy Craftsman in Europe. The only Craftsman tools I can buy are from Amazon...
Let me know how I did

Hako: you did great and usually those sets are missing sockets or a ratchet so a complete set to work with while you wait for an older one to pop up. good price too.

Outlaw: nice weekend sir. i'd like to know if the washing canvas is true or how the best way to clean it up because i have a few old golf bags and tarps that could use some cleaning care soon.

I drove 15 hours yesterday to pick up a few things i'll post tomorrow when i get some time. just a heads up there were 3 vises, 2 bandsaws, grinder, tool boxes and a few tools involved while delivering a pretty nice DP to another member.

cheers and Happy Mother's day all and don't forget to ask Dad if he has any spare tools to pass on when you might be at their house.

I forgot i had a few pictures saved of some of my finds that one of my GJ enablers was sending me as I (he) was gathering some of them up for me for my trip.

1) Record 4.5 inch maybe 15 years or older English made vice
2) Starrett 4.5 inch vise
3) Craftsman bandsaw on original stand
4) Taiwan made vertical/horizontal bandsaw on stand
5) Craftsman tool box
6) Delta 3/4 HP grinder

He needed a nice drill press and i needed a good excuse to take a 15 hour drive hence my name. i'll add more pictures of the missing items when i get some or check vintage toolbox thread. by the way i'm looking for a 30's or early 40's Craftsman two level Drill Press vise in case anybody has an extra one to sell or trade. if soliciting is not acceptable to the best pickers in the world here please let me know and i'll put my needs in the "wanted" section.

don't forget to ask Dad for a few tools of his or gramp's while you are over wishing mom best wishes.

Nine 4, My cases are metal, looks like aluminum. With a glass front. Both are keyed alike. They can be hung left, right or either side. I am open for trades. And offers.
They are 18x24x2.5 deep

I also thought the instructions are very cool. I don't know if it's common to get it with a tool set, but I've never seen it before! Inside the instructions there is a poll/question list thing (I don't know how you call it in english).
Here are some pictures

Hako: those are some of the cards the manufacturers wanted us to fill out so they could figure out more ways to sell us stuff. also a warranty card which i bet a lot of us never filled out.

I bought a similar set new in the 70's and used it for almost everything and never did break a ratchet even though I never had a breaker bar. of course since i joined GJ one tool is just not enough anymore, but that set is now sitting in a tool box in my car and i still use it all the time.

even though your set is quite a bit newer it is still good quality and you probably paid less than i did for mine 40 years ago.

One way or round trip? Either way, wow. Your vehicle must have been dragging from the extra weight on the way home.

Nice find!

Do you have a picture of your box with logo intact? I didn't think they were ever brown from the factory. Their carry boxes of that time were different shades of brown, but I thought the boxes with drawers were all blue. :dunno:

The one Flatintoone has, is probably from the very very late 30's to early 40's as IIRC in the early to mid 40's they changed to a metallic blue rivet on badge, where as on his there should have been a painted oval yellow emblem. Which we can sorta see remnants of.

more pictures of the Craftsman bandsaw on original stand. also my enabler put new wheels on it that i ordered while it was sitting in his garage waiting to be picked up.

also a few pictures of the Craftsman tool box are posted over on the vintage tool box thread and i have almost new (mine from late 70's) to put in it after i clean it up. i also managed to stop by a couple young 75 year old's house and pick up a few other gems. some German made tools and a few other vises on my trip around the state(s) yesterday. i'll post pictures of them later since i need to run after posting these to each of our 80 year old moms homes.

OK two more bags to go; lets see if I can complete these before I have to do do Mothers day with the MIL and SWMBO.

Another "Pouch, Mechanics"

This one feels oil soaked, an it is darker green, so may be Marines, unless the oil darkened it.

attachment.php

Misc sockets, a Walden hammer impact, the big socket is Wright, the T-bar head is Armstrong,

attachment.php

All Plvmb except the big socket and extension are Proto. the widget beside the big socket is probably a stud extractor of some sort.

attachment.php

All SK but various eras:

attachment.php

SO except the Hammer impact and Flair wrench are Blue Point. The ratchet is from 1951, and some of the sockets are the same or 52. the half turned deep is an impact modified for access.

Drivesitfar,

Great looking bandsaw, Awesome stand and setup. I swear those things look like they can tip over with ease!! I had a tablesaw with that type of stand and it's amazing how sturdy it was! Great find!

I went to the Flea Market this morning to look for the vender that had the missing hex key for the set I picked up last week, but he must have taken Mother's Day off. No joy. I'll have to wait until next week.

I did manage to spend $35 though. :headscrat
The Troy-Bilt sign will go on the wall in the shop, and the beer sign will go in the man cave.
(poised on the frame of the bench I still haven't finished)

OK going for it:

The last bag is a light backpack/Day pack and it has several straps for gear, I suspect some for trenching tools. Not sure what the "tail" strap/clip is for.

This one is USMC made by Bates.

Dykes are Cameron, and marked "US. Never heard of Cameron... Crescent Snips; needs a proper pivot bolt, the big TRuarc snap ring tool is my second, however one is inside and one is outside so not a dupe! :D the Sleeve driver is shop made, the thing next to it I believe is for a large cannon plug wrench slip it over the cable and onto the fine knurled nut and when you lever it in either direction is cams the toothed shoe against the knurls.

Diamond and Enders chisels, SO drift punch, Craftsman Pry bar, Brass bar, Woof handleds driver an all cast/forged driver. The driver with the fat handle is Deco, and has six holes in the fat part that the half grooves line up with, almost like its for bit storage.. :dunno:

Wrenches; MAC, Plvmb Indestro, Williams Crescent, Penens, and the odd one is a no name.

Walden Ratchet, SO 1/4 Speeder, Plvmb & Bonny Extensions, Penens & Williams Speeders

Last, but far from least, a Pristine Bate's made 1942 BAR magazine ammo belt! Several of the bag/canvas pics look like there is that white mold/stuff canvas sometimes gets. Its a lighting artifact; none of them have it in real life...

The guys running the show at the estate sale took my card, as i'm interested in the bench top (3" thick laminated, I believe bowling alley lane. 8' long.) and several ammo cans full of lead weights, and he's got a vise he's bringing down to show me...

Yeah I should probably scrap them so they can be shipped across the big pond to be made in to HF tools...

NOT!

Sorry, going to have to ask: how did it ruin the canvas? I've machine washed canvas before with no issues... As long as it's not isn't the throes of rotting away, it should be fine? :dunno:

Ok my scores from Lewis Auto Swap meet.
The guy in the booth next to me got a lot of my business, items from a friends estate who is in the hospital.
5 USA made clamps, Wilton, Craftsman, Brinks & Cotton and 2 with no brands. $20
I love these little Sears red metal boxes, items below them are what was in them.
70's and early 80's Craftsman stuff, Crown label wire brushes (one never used), jewelers screwdrivers, threading dies and staples, later stuff include those blue click together screwdriver holders, never used wood chisels and pouch, gum remover, all red handle screwdriver set and a few other items.
Shell grease can, like new Channellock battery pliers with pouch, Stanley nail puller, Proto long flat tip driver, GE tape measure for my tape measure collection, Southwestern Bell comb for Jeff Moss LOL
Safety Clean benchtop parts cleaner and Klein knife for $100

Stuff I picked up from other vendors
Vintage Craftsman paint sprayer for $20, works, has replacement Packard motor. I should have an appropiate Craftsman motor for this.

USA made Milwaukee Sawzall for $45

U-line package scale and Coca Cola 1960's TV tray for $30

Not pictured is a GE oven for the shop for pre-heating parts or powder coating and some 289 Ford timing covers and pullies I will clean up and resell.

Yesterday was painful. Drove through Ferndale, a town not far from Blaine only to discover that they were holding a community wide garage sale. And I had to meet with my mom for an early Mothers Day breakfast. Just in time to see the signs go up on every block. (I did hit one and scored the little lathe for $7).
Thursday went OK. Most of an open geared Indestro socket set and some box/open end Indestro wrenches. A couple of Cman & S-K. Large aluminum square is Cman, (Now I can get rid of the rusty ones I don't like to use). Set of Cman torx drivers, shiny Cman spinner, and an S-K spinner, too. Also got the almost unused Asus Bamboo edition laptop for another $10 w/ a cracked screen. For $50 we're getting the replacement and will have a screaming laptop.
It rained overnight so when I went back to the same sale on Friday I got the 1998 Compaq free but full of water. Dried it out and introduced the boy to Quake. Also got the fine stones and a putter for an avid golfer at work for $3.
I never posted it but I picked up a wooden box full of sockets. The bulk of them Asian. I found a bunch of Indestro Selects mixed in so I bet I can make a complete set. The guy was using the box of sockets as fishing weights!
