As I mentioned before, this was the last of 3 stops I made, and the only worthwhile one. $20 got me this:

From the top, we have a Proto Los Angeles hack saw, Channellock 460s (16" long!), 1940s SO 3/8 sliding T-handle and speeder, a Lufkin 12' tape with a blade in good shape, Channellock needle nose pliers, Petersen Vise Grips, Walden 1/2" speeder, =Craftsman= 4" adjustable, Irwin Vise Grips, SK 'Channellocks', Kraueter slip joints, a Vlchek ignition set, and screwdrivers by Tiger (a Gamble's brand) and Bridgeport.

Yep, I think ZK nailed the emblem.

Flat, it is worth trying the SG trick on the emblem and the area around it. I can't tell if it is paint cracking or the emblem cracking along with it.

zkling, thanks for that! Perfect!

Outlaw, SG might be the last, best hope for that emblem; again, I'd be surprised if it worked. I took a look the other day with an x-acto knife and very, very, very carefully picked at at couple of the light blue-gray chips. Whatever was beneath them came right off with the blue-gray, leaving bare metal.

I thought they were tappet wrenches. I like them due to how thin they are.

Yeah, I like then also, decided to start collecting different brands and eventually make up a display of the different approaches.

The numbered Long C Craftsman are mid 30's to mid 40's or so, and usually were sold in sets of three, but their is a 4th available also.

It's surprising how many times I still use them for tight access, even though it's been ages since I last had to adjust a tappet..

Man So many great scores this weekend! Great job guys!

Outlaw I'm interested in the snapon massive crows feet if your interested in trading them for something. I've always wanted massive crows feet for some reason:headscrat

Bob cat gimmie a day or two to get my PM box cleared a bit. its almost full so I need to archive a bunch... The er can discuss.

So I was genius enough to was a WW2 shelter half in the washing machine without thinking about it:mad: It left all these wrinkle marks where the shelter had rubbed all over the inside of the washing machine. It has a permanent acid wash pattern to it:sad: I think in the military items I have seen that are made of canvas the cleaning directions say hand wash at the most but no machine wash?? I am not trying to claim to be a canvas expert, just want to save someone from ruining something like I did:D

Hmm, what type size of machine? I've washed tents before without an issue... But you should use the gentle cycle for anything old...

Start chain smoking and spending all your time in the sun out on salt water.
You'll have massive crows feet in no time. :lol_hitti

No jake I don't want those type! Thats over 50 years away before I start to get those!:shocking:

50 years? just how young are you? :headscrat most people start growing them in there late twenties or thirties...

Outlaw, that Deco driver is a 9/32, discussed over at Tooltalk. Cleans up to a nice looking driver.

Cool info! And lauver sure did an incredible job shining up that one he found! I hadn't even thought about it not being 1/4"! I checked and sure enough! what is funny is I immediately remembered a Hinsdale "1/4" drive socket from last week I had on my side table next to my easy chair/office, and sure enough, it's 9/32 drive! I wonder how many others I have here and there I haven't checked... :headscrat

Had to go to Home Depot today and decided to check out a pawn shop on the way back. They usually price used name brand tools nearly at full retail but sometimes you can find deals.

Got 2 brand new S-K spark plug sockets (5/8" and 13/16") and a used S-K 1/4" drive handle for $7

sk.jpg

The nearby Goodwill store yeilded a lightly used NEMA L15-30P twistlock plug for .99c. They also had the first vise I have ever seen there. A no name POS 3" vise marked only "China" for $9.99. I was shocked. Usually in the rare occasion a tool makes it to the sales floor it is priced higher than Snap-On even if it is Chinese trash covered in rust!

More Craftsman box details:

This ebay listing has the catalog page from 1945. Can't tell if the badge is a decal, paint, or metal. All the other details match up. Says color is "Machinery Gray", and the top compartment is lined with green felt.

Maybe someone there is reading GJ?

If you are referring to the pawn shop I went to I think they use Ebay and pick the highest priced item as their starting point when researching most tools.

They do understand USA made stuff is better though. They had 2 sets of brand new craftsman metric deepwells one USA and one China. The China one was $10 and the USA priced at $25.

I got a good chuckle out of seeing them price used Klein nut drivers at $6 each!

last year I bought a snap-on top box on CL for $50 and a co-worker has been hounding me for it.
it was in his town so I told him if he picked it up he could have the SO straight up trade.
so I got this this morning .
1972 waterloo made Blackhawk(new Britain).
all the tools in the top are Blackhawk!
I aint a post *****, but I will put some of these pix in the vintage toolbox and Blackhawk thread. come to think of it I never said Blackhawk.

Those should have the herritage (as Nine calls it) emblem riveted on the front. There was a time in the early 40's when they made a beautiful metallic blue long C emblem, then before that and back to the late 30's was the yellow decal emblem on your box and I believe my little box. I have a catalog from the late 30's but it predates your box. I want to guess yours would appear in a 39-42 catalog. :dunno:

Beatcad: i guess you did ok for $50. of course it isn't a wood box so you'll have to post it in the vintage tool box because it is cool. and did you say there were some sort of tools in it? like Outlaw says this is GJ so post as many pictures and on as many threads that apply as you wish.

if you ever have a garage sale to sell all the tools you get in these boxes I might have to take a flight from Seattle to come to it. man i'm jealous of the boxes you find stuffed with some great tools too.

94: I'm sure you checked the condition of the plug which is probably new. i wonder if it might have a circuit breaker button that popped out. did you check for one? have you looked online for the manual since it looks like a fairly new machine?

good luck and i'm guessing NINE is going to be drilling some serious holes if you get that tool up and running.

Guys, been real busy. I see you've dug up some treasures.

Found myself junk drunk a couple times lately. I hit up Yard Sale Sunday at a place called Antique World and also The World's Largest Yard Sale at the county fairgrounds. Well, I went nuts buying stuff the last couple weekends and hope to take some photos later.

Here's one purchase I got real excited over. A fine condition Ridgid 2300 3/8" ratchet made by Wright. Bought it for $1. It was the replacement rat. in a cheapo Taiwan set. I picked it up to ask if it was for sale separately and before I could open my mouth the guy said a dollar!

I saw the date on the label and thought it may have a 1yr mfg warranty so I called the number you see and told the guy that the drill would not power on and asked if there were any repair places local. He asked what thickness metal the drill was on, I told him 3/16", he said it needs either 3/8" or 5/8" to power on, I can't remember right now because I'm still shaking in shock... I ran outside and grabbed this piece of plate and it fired right the f' up...I tried posting a video but can't upload it with my phone like I can pics... :willy_nil :willy_nil :willy_nil :willy_nil :willy_nil :willy_nil :willy_nil :willy_nil

I can not believe this, I have been wanting one for a couple years but they always are out of my price range or beat up bad when affordable. I happened to check CL this morning and saw a listing for "slugger drill press" $150 obo. I text the guy and he meets me at my warehouse with the drill. I go to plug it in and he says it doesn't work, he can only get the magnet to work. I try it out and nothing but the magnet works just as he said. I told him I didn't feel comfortable buying it not working and asked if he wanted anything in trade, no deal so he leaves. I think about it a few minutes then text him with the $80 offer and he text back "deal". He turned right around and brought it back over, took the cash and wished me good luck.... I need to buy a freaking lotto ticket right about now :D

Drives, pm me your number and I can text the video, only way I know how to do it. :dunno:

That is beyond sucking. I am so happy for you and jealous at the same time. In my building I work very close to the Customer service department. It always surprises me when people won't just call and ask a questions and when they do what they are missing. Anyway nice find and congratulations again.

Saw this today at a garage sale. Not exactly tool related, but it could be. Hey the guy was using it to store welding tools/supplies so it qualifies. Kind of interested in the old thing just for the heck of it, but don't know what I'd use it for. Guy said it weighs about 900lbs. Probably get it for $50 bucks. I'll think about hopefully it's gone tomorrow when I go through there. Bye the way that's dirt and gravel on the one wheel he said he set it on his driveway with the skid steer and it sunk so he brought it back inside.

Thanks Guys!

May be bluebolt, it's dated 12/2013 so either late last years model or early this years model. I am beyond thrilled, speechless over here. It came with the tie down harness but was missing the original pilot pins, chip hook and hex key according to the manual. One thing I like is the lil Made In U.S.A. sticker :thumbup

An operating manual for a similar Fein says it needs to be on 12mm-1/2" steel or it needs additional clamp down force. I could not find your model number using Google or Feins website, the details on yours match the one I posted.

Thanks eborcim! I literally had the allen wrench in one hand and the phone in the other thinking I'm better with a wrench than communicating. I decided since it was brand new and may still have a mfg warranty, to call first. :lol_hitti

I stopped by a Craigslist seller's home to buy an imitation Gertsner box and didn't buy it because it wasn't original and a little too much at $190, but asked the nice old guy if he had any tools. first off he mentions he has Starrett machinist tools and his prices were pretty high. then he takes me over to a bunch of odds and ends he said are pretty old (my kinda tools).

He told me the un plated vise grips are the old ones from the 40's. are they??

I handed him $50 for some interesting old vise grips and some German made ones.

i also bought these rollers i can put on a sawhorse or a table away from my saw that might help a lot for my fence project this summer. $10 of the $50 went to these rollers that look pretty heavy duty.

Outlaw:i think i remember seeing they were made in Nebraska and the lever in the middle comes loose when you open them.

I don't have them here now, but i'll look again if you need any pictures of them open to help date them. i think patent date on them was 1942.

i'm not going to cut any heavy gauge with those little German crimpers, but i bet they are a quality tool.

anybody have rollers or pictures of them mounted on a table or sawhorse?

Nine thanks for the video and i'm assuming it took maybe a couple seconds to punch through that piece of steel? now you can make your own commercial racks or a bridge or a whatever with that tool. nice find and glad you called him back.

Nine, Words cannot describe how much you ****.

Hegner, I'll third it, you really do need that safe. For the purpose suggested by Nine.

DIF, I'm certain you've got a set of early Petersen Vise Grips there, nice score.

Thanks guys! I haven't drilled anything with it yet, just tested that it works. I only have one bit and don't know where it is atm, I picked it up in a pawn shop lot a while back and threw it aside. My plans for it are to drill out a welding/fab table for tapped holes. I expected to find a decent used one at a great price so that I could use it for the table, then turn around and get my money back selling it but this may be a keeper!
