Nine, I'l try to get it posted sometime soon, we have been in "lets paint the kitchen" mode all weekend I was lucky to even get out on Sat! (Pays to be the early bird riser in the house!)

Actually they are all 9 inches. The top one is a "Lakeside" the 2nd and 3rd are "Auto" and the 4th does not reveal a name marking yet. I only see the number 5 on one side near the bottom of the handle.

Picked this up over the weekend for the equivalent of a nice dinner out. I think it's a Sipco based on comparable photos online, but there are no markings other than "Excelsior" on the hardware. Other Sipcos I've seen online have the round mirror, same drawer configuration and have a decal that appears to have worn off on mine. Inside were a number of machinist tools - calipers, micrometers, lathe bits, morse bits and various other instruments. Does this mean I have to find a lathe now?

Beat - the close up of the drawer also showed the lock joint for the drawer. any hint to MFG there?

Is that because as a tool these micrometers have just become obsolete? I don't know anything about machinist tools, but this find has caused me to start reading and learning. I'm still not sure if any of the tools will be of much use or value - at least until I find a lathe, at least 22 inch with a 96 inch bed of course. Does anyone see anything particularly useful in the photos? I've been looking for a drill press for a while, so now I'll be trying to find one that is compatible with Morse bits I guess?

I'm happy to take suggestions from anyone on where to learn more about this stuff.

I've looked at some photos online of Star boxes, and there definitely are similarities. But there are similarities to Gerstners and Sipcos as well. The only maker mark I can find are on the front hardware - "Excelsior". The middle clasp/lock also has the number "492" which could be the model of the box or the clasp??? There is pencil writing on the inside bottom, but it's only a few numbers that I forgot to write down. I should look again.

83, those micrometers are fine for beginners, it's not like you will be making parts for profit or the space shuttle... They may or may not be accurate to a new calibrated mic but if you use them to measure two different items with the same mic, they should read correct. Meaning, if you measure something with one of them, then make a copy of that item on your upcoming lathe find , use the same mic and the item will be identical. If you have some calibration tools, you can check measurements to those to see if the mics are still on.

Don't build a space ship with them unless you need it really bad.

I picked these up for $20 (for both) this weekend:

The metal rolling storage shelf unit is heavy duty and the knotty pine work bench is going to work great in the front garage/woodshop.

I picked up this aluminum fishing weight mould along with a BIG lead laddle.
$5! The lead laddle is worhth that. Sorry no pic of that as it is out in the garage with my pile of lead.

I know about vinegar for derusting steel and iron but what do you use to de-oxide aluminum? Is there a solution for that?

Thanks for the reply outlaw. I was hoping that there was a solution that would do that for the inside hard to get to areas. But alas there is nothing like elbow grease!

Nice!!!! If I had seen one in my travels, I wouldn't have recognized it as being a file handle. I'll have to keep my eyes open for these.

How often does one find a COMPLETE vintage socket set? And a nice RHFT ratchet? With the label still on it? And a $5 price tag? NEVER. Well, almost never. OK, it might be missing the extension, but hey . . . I have one already! A little frosting on my estate sale cake too . . .a set of Columbian router bits for $8. That was fun.

Sales are definitely slowing down around here. Only one sale worth checking out this morning. ONE !

The guy set up a patio fire pit in the driveway to keep people warm, nice touch. He had some decent quality old tools, if you needed the basics. Pliers, hammers, adjustable wrenches, but that was pretty much it. Nothing that stood out, and nothing I needed more of. He was pushing the sale of his Cman radial arm saw hard, almost desperatly. I kind of felt bad for him. Unfortunately I already have one, and you just can't give those things away these days.

I was curious about a motor I saw buried on his bench, and he asked how much I'd give for it. I don't need another one I was just wondering what the model number was, but I offered $10 for it anyway because he wasn't selling anything and I though I'd help him out.

It's rusty, needs a new cord, new bearings, and the thermal switch is wonky. But it runs and winds down ok.

No date code. I think it's a late 30's or very early 40's.

I posted a little too soon, the mailman just drove away. The package he left was sticking out of the mailbox it was so long. I don't think my mailman likes me very much.

An ebay purchase. I paid more than I should have but less than I could have.
The package was heavy, shipping was a killer.
