Eighthd, the adjustable things are called machinist jacks. They are used to stabilize odd shaped parts when machining. Great score!

Mostly keep all my stuff, weather I use it or not. That is what I tell the sellers something like
"I am not trying to beat you up, but if the price is right I will buy it. If not, I don't, cause I have so many such and such as it is, that (what he is selling) may sit till the day I die"
This guy had a Channel Lock brand screwdriver, I asked him what he'd take.
It was mixed with in a pile of junk. He picks it up, I thought "here we go"
Big thing, he didn't relieze it was channle lock, and this and that, OK, so what will you take for it?
He wants $5.00 I say No sir, thank you, I have plenty of screw drivers, and give him my "if the price is right speech.......................May sit till the day I die speech..................LOL
I would have gave $2.00 TOPS!!

do you guys re-sale all this stuff or do you all belong on that show Hoarders?

The answer to your question is yes and yes.

I "sail" for three reasons (in order of priority):

#1. Entertainment. It's just plain fun to explore new neighborhoods, meet people and uncover great old stuff you just can't find any other place. I would even pay admission to dig thru piles of old "virgin/untouched" junk from decades ago. Some guys like to golf, watch sports on TV, go to the lodge and drink. Wifey and I enjoy sailing on the weekends.

#2. To fill in/upgrade my collection of tools. (tools I use, might use or just like to collect/look at/fix up for the fun of it).

#3. If I'm walking down the sidewalk and see a loose "benjamin" I'll stoop down to pick it up. For the same reason if I see a meaningful profit/reselling opportunity at a sale I'll pick up the item. This is reason #3 and helps fund #1 and #2.

Pretty much the same with me. My goal is between the money I make selling and the money I spend buying it comes out a wash. So my hobbies pay for themselves basically. Too bad I've been doing more buying than selling lately :willy_nil

Got a few things from the fleamarket yesterday. A few old USA made pliers (Klein, Eclipse, and one other I can't remember). Some kind of t handle tool with a 3/8" female square on the end made by billings? A 8" 1/2" extension. A random 12 point snap on for 50 cents.

But the best deal was the Snap On needle nose pliers that had never been used for $2. Also, an older style Snap On hard handle (yellow) flat tip screwdriver for $2, but the tip had a piece chipped off and the blade has a slight (almost unnoticeable) amount of rotational play like someone turned it too hard or something. Was going to see if I can get a new blade for it, but even if I can't, it was only $2.

Yesterday was a fun day combing through three estate sales with my parents, who were in town for the weekend. My Dad's a master scrounger from way back, and my Mom's got a good eye and loves to talk to people. Here's how we did:

All three stops were company-run sales on their second days, so they were willing to negotiate. The first stop was a detached garage and house with reasonable prices.

For $25:
Late '40s/early '50s Westinghouse fridge, surface rust on the outside, great condition on the inside. Whirred away when we plugged it in and started cooling. I already have a Coldspot for my garage, but couldn't pass this one up for the price.
View media item 50442View media item 50441
For $5:
Mom found some American flags and a table runner she liked. You can see them on top of the fridge.

For $15:
Four vintage wooden folding chairs destined for the front porch, for when expanded seating is required
View media item 50433
Nothing amazing inside the house, but a few good finds.
For $10:
8" Crescent wrench
7/16"-1/2" Companion DBE wrench
Small oil can
Brand new drop light
Brand new motion detector flood light
All of the cups and glasses were in the fridge and were "free"
View media item 50434
For $1:
78-rpm record of Gene Autrey singing Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer

The second stop was a pretty nice property, with fine furniture upstairs and a higher-end wood shop in the basement. The company knew what they had downstairs and the big stuff was priced accordingly. We scrabbled around on the workbenches and in the rafters for a few smalls.

For $10:
2 Dunlap DOEs
Pierce Arrow SOE
No-name dogbone wrench
Gardner brand DBE
No-name double socket end wrench
Genuine CHICOM set of specialty files (check out the marking)
Unknown handtool with a clamp
Cool Hoe Corp pipe wrench with a 1922 patent date
Wrights variable diameter drill bit for a brace (looks just like the Craftsman bit I have of the came vintage)
Box of washers
Stanley cat's paw
Craftsman cold chisel
Misc 2'-4' pieces of solid steel rod, from 1/4" to 5/8"
32" threaded rod, looks like it may be a screw-cutting feed rod for a metal lathe

View media item 50444View media item 50445View media item 50450View media item 50451
Third stop was a tear-down cleanout, with a period correct mid-century light pink living room!!! Down in the basement, some good things we passed by, but in the shop area we did well.

For $200:
Craftsman King-Seely floor drill press with original craftsman motor
Taiwan-made drill vise with a tilt-able clamping bed
View media item 50443View media item 50439
For $125:
Second C_man K-S floor drill press, Westinghouse motor and missing some two knobs
5 brand new 9/16" - 8 specialized TRW brass taps
Plumb bob
4 high-end oiling nozzles for a lathe/mill (not pictured)
(Dad did this negotiation, he did a better job of bundling than I did)
View media item 50446
For $10:
Box of wrenches including a Crescent DBE
Some S-K, Snap-On and long-C Craftsman sockets, including short extension,
Tiny Craftsman ball peen
Plumb bob
Plumber's wrench
Spanner wrench
Four Loc-Line coolant nozzle kits
Two 48" by 2" steel rods that must have weighed 45-lbs each
View media item 50438View media item 50448View media item 50452
All-in-all, a good day worthy of the time spent. Mom and Dad fly home today, but will drive back up for my Daughter's graduation in a month and take home his goodies. Plus, we got a lead on an upcoming sale packed with high-end tools, only used once, if at all, great prices, etc. We'll see....:willy_nil

If it indeed has a threaded rod, I'd tighten that also. usually those wood caps can jack out with a wood screw and be replaced. Nice find, looking forward tot he pics!

I stopped back today and the place was decimated. The BB top is 2" thick and 75" by 30".

It was used as a workbench as it has some "character" marks along the front half and there was a vise mounted on the RF corner. I'm not sure what they had mounted behind the vise with the 2 pairs of mounting holes - mini drill press?

I need to fix the separation and build a solid base for it.

Cheers

Jim

3 stops and a flea market today. I had some luck at the first stop, but the other 3 were a waste of time and gas. The FM was it's usual self.

Pics 1 & 2 - Stop 1 - $15
Lisle under-the-dash Jeepers Creeper
(I paid more than I wanted to because I've never seen one for sale before)

Pics 3, 4 & 5 - Stop 1 - $3
a plastic 17" Craftsman handybox (I love these boxes, I used one for years as a go-box for my socket set)
a Dustfoe resperator tin filled with :
_____ 6 - 1" Kant Twist clamps
_____ 1 - 2" Kant Twist clamp

Pics 6 - Flea Market - $5
a pair of "ZIP" machinists supports (cast iron)
(I have a cast steel one that I found previously, but I couldn't leave these behind)

$23 total for the day.

Oh, and on the way home I thought I spotted a small black toolbox on the side of the highway. When I pulled over to check it out, it turned out to be a 10qt oil drain container, missing the top lid. I threw it in the back of my truck anyway.
Pic 7 - Free

I picked up this wilton vise off of craigslist today. It also came with these two adjustable blocks not too sure what they are for but for $30.00 for everything wasn't a bad deal.

Nice vise and a You **** for $30! Can you post a picture of the date on the bottom of the slide? And what is the jaw width?

Four Loc-Line coolant nozzle kits

Lots of good stuff, must have been fun moving all of that. Unless the dimensions are off shouldn't those be ~45lbs each? I too look for raw material at sales.

I wasn't too upset about just missing the Snap On box because of this Craigslist find during the week. My very first Snap On box, but I was kinda hoping for the instant upgrade :lol_hitti . I never seem to spot any where price and condition are both okay.

Honestly I pretty much bought this sight unseen. No CL photos, but I did ask a few questions over the phone. I wasn't impressed with the condition but the seller was an old curmudgeon and haggling didn't seem appropriate,so for 60 bucks this is what I got, KRA-58:

Nice box for the price, I think it is actually a KRA55. Too bad about the other one, but at least you got the nice Kennedys.

A Chas Parker #205 vise for $35. I didn't even notice the chipped portion of the base until I got home. I would have bought it anyway. It doesn't seem like it would affect anything but aesthetics.:

Very nice weather yesterday provided a number of sales and a number disappointments. :lol_hitti

Bought this nice craftsman cantilever box (very clean, but newer than I would have liked), a good condition 100% functional bluepoint multimeter and a older lenox hacksaw for $15 total.

I've wanted a cantilever box for a while, but most were either more than what I wanted to spend, in very rough condition or a combo of the two.

Ouch Dave; that's not a chip that Parker is missing the dynamic jaw support. Not an impossible fix, but still a needed fix...

Jake - if that under-dash creeper prevents even one backache, or cramp it's more than paid for itself...

Jim, try getting the draw bolts loose and the two halves separated if you can and if you have access to a jointer. get those two edges true and straight, re-glue and re-clamp/bolt. and you should have a fix that lasts for generations...

Jim, the two holes can be easily fixed with wooden dowels. Drill to size, glue and drive them in then sand flat. What Outlaw said about repairing the split.

Jake, I love those clamps, wish they would pop up around here!! The creeper is cool and those machinist blocks are beyond awesome as well, great scores!!

Dave, WOW on the saw... You certainly ****!!

ZK, congrats on the cantilever!

This is the first time I've seen these clamps in the wild. I nearly did a double take when I opened the tin. I'm sure my eyes bugged out. I've only seen them when they've been posted here. I never would have known about them if not for GJ. I know that Outlaw talks them up. Now, even thought they're small, I'll have the chance to see how right he is.

Hmmmm, now I need a project to use them on. What to do, what to do. :headscrat

As for the creeper, well now that I'm older I don't crawl under dashboards anymore. But if I ever have to, you can bet your **** I'll be dragging it out.

My haul today!

Can someone help identify this toolbox? The guy selling it said it was a snap on but I couldn't stomach that note. So after talking him down I got it for $25.

img_0540.jpg

img_0545.jpg

And I got all of these tools for an extra $25. A few snap-on , armstrong(Big wrench with some extra numbers), Mac, and craftsman i believe is in there.
img_0546.jpg

Any help with the toolbox is appreciated!

I was figuring that I would see some post from the NJ contingent about a sale I went to today. My wife found it in the paper and online and reminded me several times to go to the HUGE TOOL SALE today. Keeper!

Normally any sale with adjectives on the signs like HUGE or AWESOME should be charged with false advertising, but the one I went to today was telling the truth.

They had TONS of older Craftsman wrenches and various mechanics tools. There was what appeared to be a metal working shop in the garage - lathe, horizontal band saw and some other large equipment I didn't recognize.

They had a large anvil (for $450 - :( ) and some other stuff. I walked around and didn't see anything I needed until I saw IT. There was a 75" x 30" butcher block table top leaning up against something with a $15.00 sticker on it. I saw the apparant owner of everything, confirmed the price and almost hurt myself getting my wallet out.

I went back with a van later to pick it up and when I walked up carrying a 4 wheeled dolly he grinned at me and said "That's cheating". I replied "I want to be able to walk upright when I reach your age". He replied "Yeah- without tripping over your balls". I got it in the van and it's in my garage right now. It probably weighs 200#'s.

It has a longitudinal split between 2 boards in the exact middle of the top. I might need some guidance on fixing that. I has 3 sets of caps along the 75" side indicating threaded rod running across the top. Do I glue, cawl and clamp it back together without fussing with the threaded rod or tighten the threaded rod too?

I'll post pic's later.

Cheers

Jim

I don't want to step on any toes but do you have any details of this sale? Did I already miss it?

I love me some metal working tools!

Gear head: Wow! nice scores! looks lien the grinder head is a 30's or early 40's craftsman, and the little vise appear to be a Colten Pattern Vise. Very old, and a great find for a buck!

I've been on the watch for an oversize lathe face plate. I want to make a work shop table out of it... Nice find!

Thanks for the vise info. I was having a hard time reading the name on it. I want to use the face plate in a similar capacity.
