Today's CL score: Parker 63 1/2 bench vise. This little guy screams 40's / 50's and just had to have it. Talked him down to $30 to make it a fair price.

Outlaw - The 1940 catalog shows two types of this model, an "All Purpose" with the single straight handle and no switch on the head. And a "Heavy Duty" model with 4 handles and a rectangular switch plate. (I learned something new tonight)

You're DP may still have been made later than 1936.

Plombob, you and I may have the Heavy Duty model.
7.5" - It's a 15" DP. That's the same as the 03622 model. I wonder what the difference is ?

This style of Atlas DP shows up in all the catalogs until 1944 where it's listed as restricted. The 1945 and 1946 catalogs have no drill presses. The 1947 catalog has the new King-Seeley DP's.


I'm kinda wishing that we'd had this conversation over on the vintage DP thread instead of highjacking this thread.

Wow, I've never seen a hand crank eggbeater drill that old in that pristine condition! VERY nice find! I'd bet that would go for a lot more than you paid on Eprey...

Just an update on the hand drill. I contacted Stanley and they sent an E-mail saying that they had no information on the 624-A, but they sent me information on the 624 which was made between 1923 and 1984, so take into account the Zip code on the box and it most likely was made between 1962-63 and 1984.

There's a possibility I didn't consider. There were only a few beat up particle board cabinets in the dumpster with it. Dumpster located in an office park.

ALL: just picked up this cool little metal lazy susan type organizer. it's about 2 feet tall and maybe 18 inches in diameter. i think i'll find a bench top that it hopefully will fit on nicely.

Nines: since you are the GS 2015 OP should we move this over to the Vintage tool section since about 80% or more of the stuff we find are vintage or antique? take a poll or make an executive decision?

ALL: if you have an old tool thread and would like to move it over to the Vintage tool forum just PM a Mod with the link. we are sort of saying pre 1970 is vintage if you need an approximate date. When Ryan started the vintage forum he moved over several threads with the word vintage in the title so we need to help them to do the rest of the research.

SP.CO alloy chisel it has a shield with a capital H inside. I think it is southern pacific railroad tool, I have seen pulaski style axes marked SPCo before and they were railroad.
anyone know for sure?

I've got a couple of full size rotabins, where the ten (10) rotating round trays are around 34 inches diameter and with pole/base, stand about 5-1/2 ft tall.

Plomb tools are so scarce here, my only option is to wait for the Plomb truck to show up to the shop. Where is that guy anyway?

I've been pretty lucky and found at least 1 Plomb tool during my last 5 pawn shop visits, and multiple on each of my last 3 CL visits. Snagged 52 Plomb sockets from one pawn shop for $20.

It is the same way with Herbrand for me as the factory was just down the highway from me. I know no mater where I look for vintage tools around here there will always be some Herbrand in the mix.

No comment on the S.P. CO. But Charles E. Hall, of Buffalo, NY, makers of antique tools such as bicycle wrenches, bought by Barcalo just after the turn of the LAST century, used a shield-H logo. In this case (west coast, railroad cold chisel), though, I suspect it's a foundry mark. I looked it up in a couple foundry mark lists I have and can't find it, but there were thousands of foundries in that era and only a small percentage of their marks have been recorded.

Anyway, Thursday Score time!

First stop was a guy's place in the "Conshy" part of Philly. Had it listed for $10:



I get there, tell him my plans for it... we load it in the car, he says take it. Only didn't list it for free to weed out some of the crazy people. Score!

My plans for this are to convert it into an aquarium for my daughter. I always wanted to do an old console TV like this for some odd reason... going to keep the trim around the tube, contour the lexan to the tube, and build the rest of the box like normal. Then, cut a hatch into the top so my kiddo can feed her fishies, and figure out how to put switches into the original switch spot for the filter and lights. Should be pretty cool once it's done.

Then, down in Will Smith's area (West Philly), I met up with a guy at his place to rid him of his grandpa's old tools. He just needs the room and some extra cash... I left a lot of old power tools behind, but what I did snag for $40 is pretty fair:




Who sold these Park boxes and why do I seem to find more than any of you? Seems like 1/3 boxes I get are Park




Now let's see what we got here... cause I didn't look too hard while there, I was more concerned as to whether my car would still be there and/or on cinder blocks by the time I was done.





An OLD S51 Armstrong rat, a pat pend SK rat, a 60's CMan 1/4" rat with oil hole, various wrenches, sockets, drill bits... and lead fishing weights. I heard some of them sell good, but I have no clue, anyone want to give me some insight?



Some VERY old sockets, a few Hex drive sockets, even Square sockets! A really cool old adjustable wrench, and a few other goodies...




Various wrenches, a German made Dunlap chisel, Williams Brooklyn S Wrench(!!! don't know why I collect the Brooklyn marked ones, but I do)

I picked up 3 tool boxes and a bunch of hand tools today from a co-worker who was helping a family member sell off stuff from the ex-husband. Three different Craftsman carry boxes.
The red box with two drawers has a few dents but can be cleaned up. It was mostly empty except for a really old and beat up air tool. Still have to test that to see if it actually works.



The black box is missing the top tray inside and was totally empty but will be easy to clean up and use for storage.


The gray box has its tool tray and was pretty full of various hand tools.



Some tools from SK, Champion, Thorsen, Craftsman, Companion, and misc Japan, Taiwan.

I've got a sweet old Gedore ratchet that's missing it's stud.

Looked like it was used maybe twice. He had a shop with MGs and I assume it was too big for them and that's why he decided to get a 2 post.

He was asking $850 for it and I was going to buy it no matter what. I asked him about the price and he immediately said "$750", I was just hoping to get like $50 off. I'd been looking for months and was about to buy a cheap new one for $1595 plus tax. I even got one of the furniture dollies because of how we had to load it in the pickup truck.

Those who have been around since Jeff’s inaugural thread know I am a very selective picker and I rarely report my finds. I only collect WWII era tools that went on a vehicle toolkit or in a motorpool mechanics toolkit, although I will occasionally grab something else outside my niche, if it’s odd, interesting, valuable, or useful.

Today’s Early Bird at my favorite flea market is a good example.

Hiding under the pliers, tinners’ shears, and the putty knife to the left is this little leatherette pocket calendar.

Whenever I see something like this in an old toolbox, I open it. As you guys know, the oldtimers kept all sorts of things in cases and tins originally holding something else (Sucrets, snuff, etc). As you can see, the company that handed out these complimentary day-timers had a NYC telephone exchange number that pre-dates 1947, which told me that whatever was peeking out of the pocket might be something just as old.

It was.

It’s a contour gauge, patented by Richard A. Stockton in 1928, and made by the Stockton Profile Gauge Company (of Wellesley, Massachusetts).

Everything else will go into a collector’s kit. This goes in the shop!
