Nice find! Nick, you should check out Green Tractor Talk (if you're not there already).
It's a great online community of JD owners. Lots of helpful info and ideas.

Which model did you get?

I just picked up what I hope will be my most expensive garage sale find of all. Last month I was at an estate sale with a lot of tools when I noticed a John Deere compact utility tractor in the back of the barn and asked if it was for sale. Turned out it was for sale and it was cheap. Fast forward through a few weeks of negotiation and now I'm the proud new owner of a 4x4 diesel compact tractor with a front end loader, a belly mower, and a post hole auger. The machine has low hours and everything is in great shape and best of all I paid about 30% of the new price. I've already got a set of pallet forks on the way for the FEL, no more heavy lifting for me!

Best of luck in 2015 guys.

Nick

Is that an empty box from the sale that was perhaps missing something ? :lol_hitti

If so how weird is that? If it is the empty box for it I am sure I have something to trade you for it !

Yes :p

PM coming

Damn 3bay, I'm going to be sick now thanks! :puke:

Uh oh.. That's how I felt last week after the sale cancellation. The home owner was there when I went to sign the sign-up sheet that day. He told me come in and we talked a minute but he wasn't allowed to sell anything even though he wanted to.

A good day! I had not planned on going to sales today but I accidentally underpaid for my items at the estate sale yesterday and figured I would run back and pay them and hit a few more sales.

At the estate sale I found some stuff I missed yesterday, a vintage Monroe Hijackers sign and a NOS 1970's Craftsman paint brush for $8.50. The guy thanked me for being honest for coming back too and paying the difference for yesterday's stuff.

The yard sales were a bust so I hit the flea market.
Craftsman Crown miter clamp, 4 sheave motor pulley, 2 quarts of high speed cutting oil and a Ford script adjustable wrench $10.

7 machinists clamps, 4 Starrett's at top, 2 Lufkins in the middle and 1 no-name on the bottom. $25 for all!

And one of the nicest Craftsman Blocks I have ever acquired, 1/3 HP, very light use with only a few scratches, light, water cup, runs smooth, nice clear eye shields AND all four rubber feet! $60.

Plus I stopped at the U-Auto-Pull-It and picked up a part for $20 that will be an easy $120 sell!

Great hauls. And I admire your honesty!! Clamps for $25. And that block grinder is cherry (I wish I had one like that - I wouldn't even use it).

Had a pretty productive day. Not pictured are the 1 set of Pyrex casserole dishes, the pile of vinyl both of which cost a whopping 1 US dollar. Also not pictured are the free chemicals: a load of fuses, automotive cleaners including full bottles of Westley's, Lexol, RainX and a vinatge wooden crate of turpentine, Never Dull, Jasco, acetone, and the like.

Here are the sale finds:

1977 Plat map of San Francisco $10

Craftsman Carry box with tools including the Peterson Vise Grip Chain Wrench, a Craftsman locking plier, a 70' tape measure, and a 3/4" Proto Pro wrench $20

Sweet Atomic Age vanity light bulbs $5

All the tools which aren't part of the Craftsman box description above, free

Thanks for the tip, I'll check it out. I've already used advice from several tractor forums to fix a few minor things that were wrong with it.

How old or when did they make those SS ratchets ? I do not believe I ever saw one before. Is that a rubber inset onthe handle ?

Early- to mid-'90s I think. I haven't seen one in person but that sure looks like a soft insert to me. Cool ratchet, they bring good money with collectors.

I went to one local monthly auction Friday night and came home with these two pieces for my personal pleasure and collection.

First is the Arkansas Tooth Pick, a Western W-49 Bowie knife. Not their oldest made but a good example that I can restore and enjoy.

Second was this vintage 1950's era Stromberg Carlson MD-30C microphone with stand. Another nice classic piece to go in my music room area.

There haven't been many garage sales around here in what seems like weeks so I went to an estate sale near work on Friday morning. Normally I don't bother with estate sales but my brother wants a decent US made vise and in the sale ad I spotted what I thought was a Wilton Tradesman on a workbench. Got to the sale just after it opened and made a beeline for the basement. There I found a rusty, beat up Taiwanese vise bolted to one of the most pitiful 2x4 workbenches I've ever seen. The asking price? A bargain at only $98 but "don't forget, it'll be half price on Sunday!", at which point the price will only be 5 times what it's worth. :lol_hitti Nearly everything else had similarly insane prices but stuff seemed to be selling like hotcakes anyway. :dunno:

I did manage to scrounge up a couple of things I can use including yet another aluminum Coleman funnel, a replacement pump for a Coleman stove, and an X Acto whittling knife set for a total of $5 but I really can't wait for warmer weather and the return of garage sales!

Pics to come in a bit...

While out grabbing an elliptical I cruised past this second hand store. These were hiding inside. $35. Sliding table will mount on the Shopsmith, somehow. The 1 13/16 socket is missing a tooth. The ratchet will get cleaned up and may have to find a new home...

Pwrstroke the power hammer is AWESOME!

thanks it was a steal i paid 200$ for it. it was more of a donation they would have just given it to me, they had no idea how hard they are to come by. What does a 50lb little giant sell for in good used condition? Its in very good condition for its age.

Everything else was free. I picked up a ton of original tooling for my lodge and shipley lathe all is in great condition. original 14" faceplate , original 14" chuck 2 smaller chucks with matching faceplates, 2 original tool holders and a newer tool holder for the bed. Also picked up the original tailstock. a bunch of reamers and drill bits some for the lathe some are not. I have a lot of work ahead of me.
it was all free, there are two more boxes of drill bits tap and dies that i haven't even looked through yet!

Wow, I'm very envious of that. Background details? Do you do much smithing? I looked for a power hammer for a long time before I broke down and finally built mine.

I'm just getting into it. My gandfather and great grandfather were blacksmiths.
The power hammer was originally my grandfathers at his structural steel business, the business was sold to my dads brother who ran it for nearly 30 years then he sold the business about 5 years ago and they were getting ready to toss all the old blacksmith tooling and machine tools, and a 14" lodge and shipley lathe because they are strictly structural steel. I was able to get all of it. I am so thankful it all managed to come back to me since it was my grandfathers originally. My uncles and father are all retired and they have no use for it but they know i will get it all running again and that what matters to them. My dad and 2 uncles use to work on the power hammer pounding out ornamental steel when they were young and working for grandpa so it brings back a ton of memories for them. It is all going to get refurbished and put back to use as well. I emailed little giant hammer so that they can tell me the original purchaser of the hammer from the serial number.

A couple of friends paid $3K for a nice working 25lb Little Giant hammer about 2 years ago. We hauled it back home and the plugged in and started using it.

Congrats on finding your family items.
