Anyone recognize this?

If you guessed a top box, guess again! I finally found a bottom for the top I got a year or so ago!

All Pics as found. This will get a good cleaning and will hold my oldest long C Craftsman tools!

I bought a 520 with lots of tools once and it came with a bunch of personal things like the one just posted. I put them in an envelope and slid it under the bottom drawer for future finders.

I also did some horse trading with BlueBolt and part of the deal was a Gerstner box and it had lots of personal things in it, since this will be my main box, I left it all in there like the original owner had it.

This week was the monthly local tool auction and I was able to score a few goodies.
First, a G.T. & D Corp'n tap wrench. This ****** is 34" long. $5


Next, a nice 4 place Lyon cabinet set. Currently bolted together this way but could be easily separated and placed vertical, horizontal or just separate. Oh ya, and in one drawer were the keys to al four locks. $20


A complete and still functional Garmin 45 handheld GPS.


Three Drill index boxes. These will get put to good use organizing some of the many loose drill bits I have currently.


Other items not pictured are an older Titan brand small electric heater and a set of four wheels and tires from a late model Mustang. It was a good day at the auction.

Not a sale or anything, it was the FIL's box and he thinks he got it from his railroad days.

He said he didn't have any use for it anymore so I asked and he said take it!

It's going to become a dedicated box for a job, not sure what but it will come to me!

It's got some characters on it but I thought it looks cool and I'll jsut clean it and wax it. Only painting I'll do will be the bottom as it's bare and I rather it last then keep on rusting!

not a deal at $300 but i wanted a serious workbench.
i bought one 10 years ago and it was fine for what it was, but the last few years i'v been wanting something more heavy duty. yes, i've thought about building my own that was permanently attached to the wall, but over the years i've had to move my workbench a few inches to the left or right depending on the tools or tool boxes i have.
it was barely used and mostly disassembled. i put it mostly together yesterday and pretty much finished up earlier today.

rmalkow2, What size are the drawers? I think I'd stack that set. Nice score!

Drawers themselves are 14"w x 5"H, and each box frame size is 16"W x 6.5"H x 20"deep. So they could work well under a bench with enough height. Not sure where I'll use them yet. I'm hoping to build a second garage this summer so I may save them for that building.

so it's been cold and snowy here in Michigan, but I managed to find a couple of random estate sales, last Friday, one advertised tools, but I couldn't go until my lunch, by then I figured a lot of the tools had left but I still managed to find a few things

1) set of Wiha insulated screw drivers, 3.00 for the set, the long Stanley t bevel all metal 12in, for a 1.00 and the 6" craftsman c clamp for a dollar.

2) vintage craftsman sabre saw, works great, paid 5.00 bucks for it

These next couple items came from a little local flea market that I stopped at on Thursday after wrok

1) A T & S F railroad 3 pound hammer, 2.00

2) 4 almost new channel lock screwdrivers 4 dollars for the set

Friday I was heading out of town and saw a estate sale in the "general" direction that I was heading, so a little detour, mind you it was 5:30 at night when I got there on the 2nd day so...

1) just a cool little hand made box, the guy had used to store little drill bits, I paid 4 dollars for it with the drill bits, couldn't believe someone hadn't snagged it yet.

2) the estate sale folks had 40.00 dollars on it...well during the previous two days someone had broken the switch and it no longer turned on and off, both the woman in charge and the owners son stated that the grinder worked before the sale stated. after some "haggling" we settled on 10.00. so if anyone has a switch for it, I would be interested In purchasing an original one if possible

and finally on sunday, they had a indoor garage sale/flea market, not really any garage sale stuff, more a who's who of the flea market dealers from the area, but I did manage to find this toolbox, I asked how much...he said 10.00...I asked really? he said he didn't want to load it up...I said ok...unfortunalty I can't find a name or anything on it, no marking at all. it's been repainted, but the drawers work and for the most part in good shape. the handles are plastic, any thoughts?

Hello All,

First post and my first go at Garage/Estate sales. Went out this evening with the wife and kids and found a few interesting things.

5 sockets - 1 Proto, 1 SnapOn and 3 "Long C" Craftsman

2 combination wrenches, one Proto and one newer Craftsman to throw in the box as a spare.

Two Craftsman chisels and a Craftsman screwdriver, just fodder for the box.

Two hand drive things (sliding handles, forgot what they're called), one I cant see any markings on but the socket is a Snap On (looks turned down for some reason), the other is a Snap On but the drive is twisted. Don't know why I bought it, I guess because it was 20 cents?

A Blue Point feeler rounds out the hand tools.

The Swirl creeper I got for two reasons, one it looked cool and two, it rolled and my 5 year old has been asking for his own for when we're wrenching under our Bronco.

The Tool chest is an old Craftsman, not well versed in old boxes so I don't know if I got a good deal or not. Only some light surface rust that appears to have come from rusty tools. No rust holes, casters roll great. Cant quite figure out the front cover. It comes in and out of its stowed position a little stiff but I cant get it to slide in to the bottom slot and sit flush. It's not bent, I just haven't figured out how to jiggle it yet. Lock is there but no key.

Was a bit disappointed to see that the guy running the estate sale bought most of the good stuff for himself, including a machinists' chest like the one posted above. Couple of questions, do you all like to be the first dude at these things to pick the good stuff, or show up late like I did and try to deal on what's left? Also, can I rotate my pics under "manage attachments"?

Almost forgot $47 for the lot, including a Brown recluse in the top drawer! Not great I think but I'm happy.

I found a 1943 Blackhawk wrench this weekend. No big deal, just a cool wrench. But I just saw these letters on it today. USAAF What do you suppose it is? My two thoughts:

1. US Army Air Force (I thought it was air corps back then though)

2. US Army Air Field

What say you?

Tomahawk - The little box may have been for a small wet stone to sharpen pocket knives.
Nice snag on the Block Grinder. Sometimes the switches can be rebuilt, if you're lucky. Otherwise, a new switch may be difficult to find. While you're waiting, you might be able to make a plug for the rectangular hole and drill a hole for a hardware store toggle switch.
I'm not sure about the toolbox. An old craftsman perhaps ?

Ford Farmer - Nice find on the Craftsman roller. Early 50's I think. Others would know better.
I like that you found a vintage creeper for your boy. You can never be too young to learn to appreciate the finer (vintage) things in life.

dang, Mad, Beat, Tom and Farmer did well!

Great save on the SO box Mad!

Beat, those are great benches, but a recommendation: Take some 1/4" ply or even sheet metal if you have access, and attache it to the frame legs on the back, and the sides. It eliminates all flex in the bench and it is much more solid, even if you don't anchor it. Nice score.

Tom, better pics of the box? I suspect those handles are not original. the folding cover should narrow it, for who made it, but ZK can probably ID with a good pic or three of the slides.


Farmer, Wow, I had to look at the big pics quick. as that is essentially identical to one I got on Sat. Go back a page or three to my box from yesterday. Mine is '41 or '42. yours is post war. During the war they stopped production or if they were produced, it was war effort only. nothing for civilian use. With that logo it's definitely post war. probably late '40's at a guess. I know its in the '49 catalog, by '54 it was gone. Jake, can you verify? (Again)

Got a call saturday from a scrapper i met from cl a while back. Long story short he got the $42 (which was supposed be for the cable bill oops) that I had on me and I got a couple of 30 year old plastic buckets with some neat but mostly beat up/rusted stuff.

So far I made some handles for the files and ground and wire brushed a few things sanded a couple of the calipers, and taped up the hammer handles.


Anyone know what the big hook is for? My favorite is the blow torch. It still holds pressure and has actual gasoline/varnish in it!


And what the heck is the large threaded thing with the hole, looks like a giant hood pin?

Slooooooooow tool huntin' day today......spent the day at a flea market in the next town over and only bought ONE tool!!

It's a ChannelLock adjustable made in SPAIN (?)

Got it for a buck ('cause he wouldn't take .50 cents ) It was rusted shut but a couple shots of WD40 freed it up.....



All cleaned up and ready for a coating of gun oil....



This wrench is both Metric and SAE!!!....How do they do that??
I closed it down on a 13mm bolt head and sho 'nuf it fit.....then a 7/16" bolt head and it fit that too!!.....plum amazin' (How does it know???)

I'm seeing that roller throughout the 50's catalogs. I didn't compare catalog numbers, or pay attention to the handles, but that same bottom box design was offered for quite some time. It seems that only the handle type, and perhaps the location of the cover storage may have changed.

Jake by '54 the full cover went away, and all they had was the "garage door" with exposed drawers when closed, not the full coverage these two boxes use. Yes three drawers and bottom storage, but the box essence was different.

Not even sure the same company made them. I'll look at details as time permits, as I have both the rollers in the 54 catalog.

Save up some scrap and start replying to craigslist ers ads for "wanted free scrap". Its amazing some of the stuff they scrounge up. Just be cautious and don't show off how much big ticket stealabe stuff you may have in your garage just in case... Some of those guys make even other scrappers nervous

RM, One thing with all scrappers, they want the most money they can get for scraps. For instance, if you offer twice scrap price, you'll get first pick of the finds before they take them to the yard. I usually offer twice scrap price for raw materials and a lil more on usable items like shelving, tools etc. Also, he's he first person I call when I have scrap metal that I can't use or repurpose. We usually work out a trade where I get usable items for less than cash and he gets more weight than he had before so it benefits us both.
My advice to all you guys, get to know a scrap guy!

There's one that comes through my neighborhood every week, the day before trash runs collecting metal. I'm trying to catch up with him to let him know that I'm a buyer of usable metals but can never time him right. I'm tempted to put some scraps out and wait for him to come by so I can make another scrap connection.

And listen to Jere's post above. My scrap guy is honest but he's introduced me to a couple others he don't trust and I wouldn't want to deal with personally, especially at my place. They come to him occasionally at his storage and you can tell they're shady.

It's funny you mention that because I was surfing this thread last night and thought to myself "now that is a cool box!" So much of the cool stuff had been bought by the estate sale guy or family that I walked past it a few times figuring it was sold. About the 8th time I walked by I didn't see a "sold" sticker or a price so I asked and the guy told me to make an offer. He took it the first offer, guess I should have gone lower. Only from reading about your box did I know it was post war. Also pulled the "Long C" sockets from a junk bucket of cheap import stuff based on what I've learned here. What an great thread. I look forward to seeing more. Also, thanks guys for trying to nail down a date range on my box. History is what gives this stuff soul.

Lastly, anybody care to point me in the right direction as far as cleanup and lube on these old boxes. Degreaser, Simple green etc...? Once it's cleaned up it'll go back to work holding tools in my garage.

From what I recall late 40's sounds right since the paperwork was that and later. I loved the paperwork but left it with the box since it belonged there!

It's a refrigeration unit that chills the air so condensation drops out and goes down the drain.
