Would you mind taking some detail pics of the leather handle? I have one I need to replace, guitar case/amp handles on ebay look like a good fit but I wanted to be sure before I dropped the coin.

Here are a few close up shots of the handle. Single stitched seam along the outside center. Reinforced through the middle with a steel insert. Thicker in the middle and tapers slightly towards the ends.

Guitar case/amp handles? I never thought of those and will have to look at them too.

Anyone know a good way to remove some of the surface rust without scuffing up the chrome? I guess I could take scotchbrite to it then re-polish.

Soak them in CLR until you see the chrome starting to leave a milky cloud on the bottom of the pan. Then rinse with water, dry, buff, then oil.

Nice score.

Oil and 0000 steel wool, or a kitchen SOS (NOT Brillo) pad and water. Rinse and dry well... oil if you wish. DON't use scotch bright, its abrasive and will scuff

Tewertsy adn JM: Nice saves!

JM: Oxwal was a cheapo importer, (think 50's-60's HF only worse) and most of their stuff no matter where it was made (even the few pieces made in the US) was pretty icky stuff, one in a great while.... Ok.

Thanks for the info Outlaw....kinda figgered it t'wernt to high quality.
'Bout like Buffalo brand I remember that use to be sold at auto parts stores in the late '60's early '70's....they'd just about break before you'd get back to your car!

Fellow advertised tools for sale, so made trip over and enjoyed talking to him and going through the tools.

First item pictured is a Lisle 3/8" hand impact driver, PAT. No. 3,366,187

Second, third and fourth pictured item was an EC Atkins hand saw.

Fifth and sixth pictured item was a pipe vise made by the American Scale Co of Kansas City Missouri and was a Model #3.

Seventh pic is some pipe clamps.

Hit up a HUGE farm estate sale yesterday. Antique tractors, coin operated horse rides, Coke stuff and on and on! Lots of tools priced high but I found some gems. Passed on a Columbian 603 1/2 for $20 that was missing a jaw, someone else got the Rock Island but it was rough looking.

I spent a total of $154. My favorite finds of the day are the Craftsman grinder and Mummert Dixon pedestal stand and the Craftsman table saw blade wrench.

The Mummert stand is from a big old 3 phase grinder from my research. I may use it for a grinder or may repurpose it for a pub table base.

The grinder is a 1962 1/4 HP Crown label and never had side shields. The cord is bad and I don't even know if it runs. It is all cast iron and is HEAVY! Both together were $70.

The Craftsman table saw blade wrench was $2 and was part of the stuff I found just hitting all the different spots in the garage. I also picked up a nice =V= 3/8 swivel, the short 5/16 flat tip screwdriver, feeler gauge, Langley De-Liar fish scale, unusual Lufkin 50' tape measure, Lutz file handles, Plomb carbon scraper, Proto 6 pt 7/16 flex socket and the vintage hex drive Sherman Klove (S-K) ratchet set.

I also found a smattering of Snap On, crusty 1/2" flex for $10, offset wrench, flare nut wrenches, sockets, sockets, swivel and extension all of which were $1 each.

A $12 Craftsman box yielded up a Ace screwdriver, Craftsman wrench and screwdrivers, Italian folding knife, Norton whetstone, Snap On screwdriver, Stanley items, Thorsen adjustable, Vermont American USA stubby screwdriver, and a Williams adjustable.

A $10 Simonsen box had a big punch, Action socket, Blackhawk screwdriver, Bluepoint feeler gauge, Bonney wrench and socket, 3 Plomb WF sockets, Jax Beer bottle opener, Lufkin tape measure, Western Auto pocket caliper, Williams wrench and Yamaha wrench.

I love those farm sales whether estate sale or auction. Farmers generally have a large variety of tools and many times older tools that they used and used.

Nice haul!!!

Hit a trifecta at ReStore yesterday: Plomb, old Snap On and Craftsman Crown top. $4.81 for all. The chisel is Crown Top too, although pretty beat up. I actually have the identical router table already, but for $3, why not?

Anyone recognize the date code on the Snap On speeder? Looks like 1942 to me, but I'm not sure.

Hit the local pawn shops. First, for $2 I got 2 Proto LA pebble wrenches, 2 Proto wrenches, a Bonney, a Williams #12 DOE, a Penens DOE, and a very cool (don't know what it is) odd offset DOE that has what appears to be a logo of a Big C with an H inside of it, and a MAC double wobble.

Second stop had no old stuff but did "score?" a 10-19 MM set of Snappy full polish FDP Ratcheting wrenches for $125

I like the deep c clamp. The adjustable clamps are new to me, never came across before, nice and heavy.

These snap-on's look pretty clean to me and I'd just shine them up with Mothers Mag wheel polish. The wrench's just don't look like they need much. I've had better luck shining up snap-on wrenchs than any other...I don't know why but they recover better than any other wrench I've cleaned up.

Also.....super deal for only $15.00, good job & welcome to garagejournal.

So was on the east coast earlier this week and I believe it help me score my very first Wilton. I was the first guy to respond and that was in a matter of minutes. Had I not been on the east coast I would have still been in work due to the time difference and am sure I would have missed it.

So before I post the picture let me first tell you about this vice a little bit. The guy I bought it from was a super cool guy. The initial conversation I had with him lasted 10 minutes just because we started BSing. So I get back to the west coast and meet up with the guy. So we start talking and he says you want to know about the owner of this vice? Of course I said hell yeah. Turns out it was his fathers vice from back in the day. His father was not any old ordinary man though. He was in the Navy during WWII and received the purple heart. He was awarded this medal from injuries that he received during the attack on Pearl Harbor. He was on the first ship to get hit by the kamikaze pilots. During the attack he was thrown from the ship and was in the water for some time. Pretty crazy and I am proud to say that the vise was owned by a war vet and purple heart recipient. Just talking with the guy and hearing the stories was well worth it. He was also a chopper guy back in the day so we got to talk bikes too. I didnt get a smoking deal but a good deal in my opinion, gave $80 for it.

So during the conversation I see this old Cman hand carry tool box sitting there. I made a comment about it. The guy looks at me and says, you want it? Of course I did, I said how much and he said you can just have it. So I got this thrown in for free.

Drake9,

Awesome story. I have many a tools with cool history. I should probably put them in writing as well.

I think for $80 you did just fine. I would pay that any day of the week. Swivel base is worth that.

Is it a 3"? Can't scale it to anything...

EDIT: I'd get some atf/acetone soaking on all screws, nuts, and bolts until you tear it down. Looks like a perfect candidate for electrolysis...but I'd sandblast just because I have a big blast cabinet.

stopped at a sale this morning and got this old 4' bar clamp, couldn't find a name just a pat. date that looks like '31

Also got this American Shear of some sort, blade looks to be about 2" and it has small graduations on it for measuring off, I will need to research this, maybe someone here knows what it is?

Not tools, but they also had these 6 military surplus bolt-on chairs I got a great deal on them, buck a piece. I don't know if they bolt on to a transport or maybe a tank? they are pretty heavy, about 10 pounds a piece and have a different bolt pattern on each side. Anyone here know what these are to??

Got a nice set of leather-working stamps too

Uh, A Wilton like that in great shape and a great story to boot plus the tool box and all for $80. I would say you got a very smoking hot deal. Add at least $100 to that vise around my area.
Given the history I'm envisioning a tribute paint job maybe? Painted some shade of blue with a purple heart medal painted on the side in memory of the original owner?
Just thinking out of the box but it's yours to enjoy. Shows some pics when restored. Great find!!!

First sale in a couple months for me. $7 total here. All of the wrenches on the left are Cornwell, the battery terminal puller is Blue Bird, the box in the upper right is a Cornwell punch set, the top row of sockets and stuff is 1/2, the middle is 3/8, and the bottom is 1/4, all Craftsman BE. The two extensions in the middle are Craftsman CF, and the bottom two items are both Snap-On (the one of the left is still a mystery item to me, I think it might be some kind of battery related tool).

I keep thinking there must be a lot of other uses for those balancers but I've still only ever used mine on a lawnmower blade :)
